Its bad playcall if the coach can't tell his big men to get out the lane. Its like they don't understand how to run pin downs or rolls. They could learn to set high screens because it opens up a lot of space. It could give a driving lane to the guard. Or potentially a pull back and dish to the rolling big man. It doesn't slow down plays and gives you plenty of options. Its a mystery as to why college teams don't try it.

For Mitchell spacing seems the most important. Being a bit undersized but really explosive (especially laterally), the open lanes are absolutely necessary for him to score off drives. He is working on managing tighter spaces (midpost, pick n roll pulluo and stuff) but it probably will never be his strongest suit. Find a way to give him space, he is a much tougher cover.

The reason a lot of college teams are obsessed with the low post with their bigs is because a lot of time these teams don't have bigs that can shoot. Louisville that year played two bigs together that could defend very well but couldn't shoot the ball outside 5 feet, and they didn't really have anyone off the bench who could come in at the 4 spot who could shoot. If you stick them in the corner the other team will just leave them and sit in the paint, especially since there isn't a defensive 3 seconds call in college.

College bball is all about the coaches and their systems. The NBA is all about talent. That's the difference. If LeBron had went to college, his coach would have put him in a motion offense instead of putting him in isolation and just punishing the defense. Granted he would've saw a lot more zones and no one would play him straight up. Same thing with Zion. Teams just packed the paint and forced the offense to run motion. @seeehorn5 жыл бұрын
Coach Nick, I HATE to disagree with you but this video has a 'Monday Morning Quarterback' feel to it because you are discussing how all the scouts missed on Donovan Mitchell and Kyle Kuzma AFTER they exceeded expectations as NBA players. All the scouting and research in the world can't predict the motivation/work ethic/perseverance of a player when he gets to the NBA. But I get the point of the video, you wanted to see how the scouts could be so wrong about those 2 and you give in-depth analysis of how it happened. As always, your detailed analysis is way better than the HOT FAKE TAKES you get on ESPN and FS1 Do you think the zone defenses that are allowed in college basketball also restricted the ability of both players(especially Donovan Mitchell)? Also, Louisville had very good players on the teams with Donovan Mitchell, and they hung their hat on shutting down teams defensively under Rick Pitino, not offensive explosiveness so they weren't going to have 1 player taking a lot of shots and averaging 20+PPG. A final point on Donovan Mitchell is, Utah had just lost Gordon Hayward to free agency, so they needed someone to fill the scoring void. Donovan Mitchell was the guy to do it, he landed in a perfect situation as a rookie. I'm assuming Quinn Snyder saw D.Mitchell's athleticism, shooting and ability to get to the basket during the rookie summer league or when Utah started training camp, and knew he had to feature D.Mitchell in the offense.

College basketball is going to die in about 10 years. These athletes are just going to play overseas like Lamelo Ball & RJ Hampton. They want MONEY.

Wow.... horrible video if I'm being honest. Anyone who knows anything about basketball knows that spacing is the difference. Also a lot irrelevant stuff being talked about here.

Man do I know what it’s like to not have any room to be able to drive. Our paint was always clogged. One center in the paint. PF who floated through the paint and midrange. No where to go.

College basketball didn't hide these two gems. Its all Lavar or the media's fault for focusing too much on Lonzo. Even Coach Nick also hyped them up.

It's easy to score in the NBA with this modern spacing. Next time you doubt if guys from the 80s and 90s could play in the modern NBA, remember that they were finishing in traffic not like Mitchell is struggling with here.

One went to Louisville and the other went to Utah, compared to big names going to colleges the likes of Duke, UNC, Etc.

Dude, you are doing this IN HINDSIGHT. If you really are good at scouting and that you’ve realized these things before they emerged in the NBA, then you should have made a video that showed them that they would be stars in the nba. So don’t try to act like you’re some smart genius that saw everything before it unfolded.

Because we are looking for Lebrons and Giannas’s. We arent looking for guys who just hoop anymore.

This is monday morning quarterbacking at its finest. They turned out good, could've turned out trash but since they turned out good I'll make this video. You never know how a player is gonna develop in the NBA. A lot of college stars turned out busts or couldnt even make it past summer league
