Its bad playcall if the coach can't tell his big men to get out the lane. Its like they don't understand how to run pin downs or rolls. They could learn to set high screens because it opens up a lot of space. It could give a driving lane to the guard. Or potentially a pull back and dish to the rolling big man. It doesn't slow down plays and gives you plenty of options. Its a mystery as to why college teams don't try it.

Into a clogged lane? No, you still need spacing and when the defense collapses to help then he can pass. You can’t pass it when everybody on both teams is standing in the same vicinity. It’s better to take a bad shot than to risk a steal for someone else taking a bad shot. There’s still much for you to learn.✌🏾

For Mitchell spacing seems the most important. Being a bit undersized but really explosive (especially laterally), the open lanes are absolutely necessary for him to score off drives. He is working on managing tighter spaces (midpost, pick n roll pulluo and stuff) but it probably will never be his strongest suit. Find a way to give him space, he is a much tougher cover.

Mitchell biggest problem was how to use body contact he relied heavily on space and PnR which isn't good as he can't create much separation against elite defense/defenders just like what happened against Houston. If he can score in tight spaces then he will be superstar coz he already had speed, athleticism and shooting.

It’s because in college players don’t play as a team. Everyone is trying to get theirs. Being a college legend doesn’t matter as much as it does to play in the nba. Getting paid to play in the nba honestly matter to players than winning in college. Getting their stats is all that matter so players will try to post or shoot threes or score efficiently.

College there’s more double teams, press, and zone that will make the best player give the ball up. Skill translates better than athleticism because everyone in the NBA is athletic. Just because you dominate in college doesn’t mean you’ll dominate the NBA true but skilled guys usually have longer careers than athletic ones

The reason a lot of college teams are obsessed with the low post with their bigs is because a lot of time these teams don't have bigs that can shoot. Louisville that year played two bigs together that could defend very well but couldn't shoot the ball outside 5 feet, and they didn't really have anyone off the bench who could come in at the 4 spot who could shoot. If you stick them in the corner the other team will just leave them and sit in the paint, especially since there isn't a defensive 3 seconds call in college.

test Do you remember the time when the bulls traded Oakley for Cartwright and it totally changed their offense? Oakley was able to space the floor because he had a nice midrange game and Cartwright was just standing in the paint all the time basically nullified Jordan’s easy way to the basket. College bball is all about the coaches and their systems. The NBA is all about talent. That's the difference. If LeBron had went to college, his coach would have put him in a motion offense instead of putting him in isolation and just punishing the defense. Granted he would've saw a lot more zones and no one would play him straight up. Same thing with Zion. Teams just packed the paint and forced the offense to run motion. He'll get single coverage and a lot more space to dominate in the NBA.

Hey coach, you talked about being frustrated about how clogged the middle is with the big men posting up, etc. What should the big men be doing (I guess, other than doing a PnR)? Should they be waiting beyond the arc and get ready to catch and shoot a 3?

Back to my Lakers. 😀😀😀 This is not the Young Core Narrative anymore. WIN-NOW MODE means a SPOT-UP SHOOTER IS MANDATORY. If it's not Kyle Kuzma, so what ??? Lakers are KUZMA-PROOF. 😀😀😀 Lakers signed 5 veterans shooters. If Kuzma is shooting 30% for 3-pointers again like last season, things are different from last year. Danny Green as multiple Championship Ring holder is 1 of those 5 veteran SPOT-UP SHOOTER.

I was so upset with Carmelo Anthony during the Phil Jackson days. 😞😞😞 I have used Triangle Offense in my own coaching days, Carmelo Anthony was perfect for those Michael Jordan sweet spots in the System. He was listening to OUTSIDE FORCES and made it a macho thing. You don't have to robotic, you just have to learn the Triangle Offense and find your strengths in it. San Antonio Spurs and Utah Jazz run plenty of Triangle Offense "actions" because Quinn Snyder used to be the G-League head coach for the San Antonio Spurs.

Can you do a video of how Lonzo was OVERRATED by scouts coming into the league? There were at least 4 guys picked behind him that had better rookie and sophomore years (Tatum, Mitchell, Fox, and Kuzma).
@seeehorn
@seeehorn 5 жыл бұрын
Coach Nick, I HATE to disagree with you but this video has a 'Monday Morning Quarterback' feel to it because you are discussing how all the scouts missed on Donovan Mitchell and Kyle Kuzma AFTER they exceeded expectations as NBA players. All the scouting and research in the world can't predict the motivation/work ethic/perseverance of a player when he gets to the NBA. But I get the point of the video, you wanted to see how the scouts could be so wrong about those 2 and you give in-depth analysis of how it happened. As always, your detailed analysis is way better than the HOT FAKE TAKES you get on ESPN and FS1 Do you think the zone defenses that are allowed in college basketball also restricted the ability of both players(especially Donovan Mitchell)? Also, Louisville had very good players on the teams with Donovan Mitchell, and they hung their hat on shutting down teams defensively under Rick Pitino, not offensive explosiveness so they weren't going to have 1 player taking a lot of shots and averaging 20+PPG. A final point on Donovan Mitchell is, Utah had just lost Gordon Hayward to free agency, so they needed someone to fill the scoring void. Donovan Mitchell was the guy to do it, he landed in a perfect situation as a rookie. I'm assuming Quinn Snyder saw D.Mitchell's athleticism, shooting and ability to get to the basket during the rookie summer league or when Utah started training camp, and knew he had to feature D.Mitchell in the offense.

It's easy to score in the NBA with this modern spacing. Next time you doubt if guys from the 80s and 90s could play in the modern NBA, remember that they were finishing in traffic not like Mitchell is struggling with here.

Dude, you are doing this IN HINDSIGHT. If you really are good at scouting and that you’ve realized these things before they emerged in the NBA, then you should have made a video that showed them that they would be stars in the nba. So don’t try to act like you’re some smart genius that saw everything before it unfolded.
