Faces of the Colombian War (2010): Possibly the most downplayed conflict of today, the forty-year-old Colombian war shows no signs of ceasing. It's fed by a billion dollar drug trade, political division and an international land battle.
For downloads and more information visit: www.journeyman.tv/?lid=60165
The conflict is no longer about ideology. Its a battle of powers, a battle for territory. It began as a war between left-wing guerrillas - hoping to establish a communist state and right-wing paramilitary groups funded by the wealthy. Yet both sides lost support when the violence intensified. "I lost my entire family", says Anna, whose town was hit by forty guerrilla bombs. Those who weren't killed were evicted from valuable land and sent to urban slums. Accion Social the governments aid program for the displaced - has done little to help. And the US's half a billion dollars a year in aid may have indirectly funded the paramilitary death squads associated with President Uribe. With cocaine production still on the rise and much of the land claimed by paramilitary groups now used by international agribusinesses, could there be a financial incentive for the ongoing war? Paramilitary narco-trafficking has never ended, because the government is supporting them. And as an even more violent paramilitary rise to claim their piece of the profits, its only the 4 million displaced Columbians, who stand to lose.

I'm not really a fan of when Journey man uses old video to to describe new events, as the statistics in the video are mostly wrong because they are outdated. For one thing, Colombia no longer produces the most cocaine. Another thing is that the violence has decreased significantly Also the FARC are on the verge of collapse. It's a good video, but remember that it is old and outdated statistically.

LionheartOC It's not an indivual problem. What you consume won't let one murder happen. For example in Colombia's most violent year 1992 25,000 murders 1992 6500 tons of cocaine produced Meaning 260 kilo's of cocaine per murder The average person consumed 200 grams Meaning that if you'd use cocaine for 1300 years you'd be responsible for one murder.

I'm Colombian (from Bogota) and I think the joyful of the people is the best thing that we can share with the word, our music is a heritage of the world. Creativity is the definition of us. We should be focus on the quality of being in accordance with the law, we need a legality mindset. The government has to provide equity oportunities and make deep changes on agrobusinesses.

That's the Presidential Guard battalion. It is my understanding that some South American nations like Chile and Colombia received military training from Prussia after their independence from Spain. That's why the ceremonial uniform still looks Prussian/German.

asrafoo Some macroeconomic indices have shown consistent improvement. That impacts some sectors of the society. Unfortunately, the distribution of new wealth among the general population is still far from efficient. I have to disagree with your model of "whitey=bad, non-whitey=good." As convenient as it may be, it isn't very accurate in the Colombian case. Taking into consideration that both the "half Miami based elite" and the people struggling to make a living are highly multiethnic.

The Colombians have been unjustly subjected to unbearable magnitude of suffering equivalent to genocide by the minority in power. These inhuman actions triggered by greed by the few must stop. More global pressure and intervention must be given in the name of humanity. So so sad God bless them. Thank you for the great coverage.

Large landowners didn't back the Right or the military. That comes from the middle classes. The military wanted to redistribute land but the Left, fearful of success, fought it. They want to control all land, not redistribute it.

Between the impoverished farmer on one end and the desperate junkie on the other, lies a tangled chain of criminals, politicians and drug warriors. The product of a world where drugs are illegal and addicts are plentiful. And with all the corruption and greed that has created its own public Narco state. Its hard to imagine these countries drug based economies any other way.

The U.S. even if their operation in Columbia is lost, still has raw opium yields at optimized rates from Burma and Afghanistan; but Columbia is the only viable source for mass Coca (Cocaine) cultivation. Bolivia, would be the second most logical source of Coca plantations, however Washington’s treatment of their first indigenous president: Evo Morales; has irreparably damaged his willingness to cooperate with what he and many in South America see as Imperial Norte Americano aggression leaving only Peru. For this reason the School of the Americas and the U.S. Southern Command must be assertively aiming to sabotage any conventions between the FARC and Santos' government that might result in an armistice; being held in Havana no less. Securing Afghanistan's lithium mineral mines and it's poppy production which is now at 98% since invasion, where by it may then be synthesized into pure refined Heroin has certainly been lucrative for the Opiate pharmaceutical industry and the clandestine operations distributors; I'd say however that the demand for Cocaine in the United States is much more insatiable therefore some agrarian paramilitaries interfering with U.S. profits has left some in Langley quite unsettled indeed.

Other nations always blame larger, richer nations for not being able to solve their own problems. Has America historically interfered in Latin America? Of course.....by varying degrees over the years. This is what nations with power do....look at Russia and their satellite states....China...fucking England for 200 years. Anyway, the lesson here is....get your house in order. Unite the ppl against U.S. intervention foreign or domestic.... Clear your country of these fucking atrocities. You can't blame the outside world for everything.
