I'm facing this problem right even though the difference is I don't actually know anything substantial pertaining to being rational, so that's why I'm confused about where to start. If you don't mind, would you kindly help me take the first step? Maybe a book, maybe an individual I should know about, maybe trustworthy sources. Any sequence to follow etc. I want to be able to make my own decisions by also learning how to make them. It's something I desperately need right now and I think small steps would be great. You seem to actually be speaking to 'attachment' as opposed to commitment. For example, I am committed, 100%, to the idea that people can be moral without believing in god. But I'm not attached to it so much ... I have no burning desire to change the world. I can be more/less attached but I actually can't be more/less committed. If I'm '50% committed' then it seems to really mean I'm ambivalent. This also speaks to the topic of personal change. A person may feel they are not committed to a goal because their motivation may wax and wane (like me trying to lose 100 lbs.). But they are absolutely committed simply because they always want, to want, to lose weight. Attachment is a conventional assessment - the degree of motive (actions, 'doing', toward an existential desire (to 'be' different). I've found identifying the distinction of existential vs. conventional has been incredibly valuable.
