i think unfortunately that’s just the nature of season 1s as a whole. it’s main purpose is to lay the base groundwork for seasons in the future and even the later half of season 1

I think season 2 is over all the best, s1 is the start and s3 looks like the show is finishing but its not even close to s6

The fact that Jeff almost immediately loved the group and was proven to be more than just a straight-man character is why he's my favorite of the group - he thinks he's so normal at the beginning (or rather, better than most people) but he's just as weird as the rest of them are! Very well done video.

something i also like about community season 1 is how quickly we find out that jeff is actually a deeply insecure and flawed man. in a lot of shows, a seemingly cool character's flaws are usually hinted at in the first season, but only become more apparent in the later seasons. in community, we find out by episode 9 how controlling, petty and insecure jeff actually is.

Season 1 is actually my favorite season, haha That is mostly because I like when shows utilize the setting, and use characters outside the main cast, however, I also enjoy for the reasons in this video. This was a fun watch, have a great day!

This was beautiful. I am in love with this show and I just realised why. For a long time right now I have been having existential crisis. Not wanting to live you know simply because it's pointless. But I have always loved movies and games. And the line you said about how the show tells us we can have these adventures even in our real life gives me hope and my love for the show makes so much sense now. Honestly I kinda feel stupid I never realised this before. Thanks for this and definitely gonna try to do more stupid things in my life from now on instead of just being nihilistic all the time.

gosh i NEED your season 2 video now. you exactly articulate why the show feels so special, and how the stories and characters are so much different that most shows of it’s ilk and especially in this era. i think a lot of what you said about it generally comes from the simple fact that the creators were not interested in making a show that could be easily serialized - they probably weren’t against it (nbc probably would’ve liked serialization) but it just wasn’t a priority to the writers. in terms of serialization, there are a handful of episodes that could be seen out of order, but mostly the immense growth and impactful events from one episode to the next change the characters and their individual and group relationships so much that serialization wouldn’t work unless the show became immensely popular and known - which it definitely wasn’t in its day. while nbc only expected them to do the bare minimum for a popular ensemble sitcom (a friends, a cheers), the writers instead, like abed, decided to try and see what could be possible if you decided to go further and to places that they weren’t expected to (and places often straight up disallowed by nbc, but that they did anyway because they knew it was great). their main goal was to make television that was the best it could be, because dan harmon - who in-show most often seems to voice himself through abed - has always loved television but knew it could be even better. his main goals with community were to push the format forward and take those risks that other shows didn’t, rather than recycle the same stories and character types that sitcoms always fall into. he valued that more than even making money, actually often losing money or investing much of his own money when nbc wouldn’t provide the funding for his ideas. some examples being: spending over $100k of his own money on the claymation christmas episode, or $60k of his own money to get the rights to use Gravity by Sara Bareilles in the flashback episode because he was referencing a very specific fan video, or spending their entire music budget for the year on ABBA songs in the zombie Halloween episode because it fit best, therefore funding the music budget for the rest of the season himself. he said on one panel something like “community was my favorite project, but rick and morty bought me a nice house and a pool.” (not to say he doesn’t live rick and morty, but he just means it’s actually profitable unlike community lol.) in every episode you can tell that they do the “extra credit” rather than what’s passable and accepted, which i think is the overall moral of your analysis. it rings so genuine and true because it was not just the moral of the show but the moral of every person who worked on the show.

I honestly find season 1 to be just about as great as season 2 mainly because it is a lot more character focused and not really dependent on the high-concept episodes that Community would be known for. Now don't get me wrong I love when Community would mix the high-concept with great storytelling but season 1 didn't really need that to be great. It is filled with so many great interactions between all of the characters and the actors sell the hell out of it every time
