Another example of unintentionally making something more horrifying than the original subject matter was in the Spider-Man animated series, where instead of having Morbius bite people in traditional vampire method, he had nightmarish octopus suckers on his hands from which he would drain a victim's "plasma"

I work at a Gamestop, and GTA is the one game we make sure to fully explain to any parent whos getting it for their kid just cause the kid wants it, most of the time the kid looks really angry while we're describing it and make excuses for whats in it, but usually in the end the parent doesnt get it because they dont want their kids exposed to that sort of violence or sexual content that young

I remember going to see Joaquin Phoenix's Joker in theaters with my sister (I was 25 and she was 18), and I distinctly recall people bringing their children in to go see it because they hadn't paid attention to the film's rating and thought it was just another superhero movie. By the halfway point in the film, pretty much everyone who had brought children had cleared out because that film is dark, especially for kids. It just kinda struck me as odd that they had done no research into a film that they were taking their kids to.

I saw The Terminator at around age 8 or 9. I had officially had enough for the night when the T800 emotionlessly put a scalpel in its eye, popped it out, wiped the hole dry with a towel, and then showed the glowing red robot eye underneath. That was a bit much for me. Of course, now it's my favorite scene.

I remember back in school, there was this old 5.5" floppy computer where you'd take a long test and it would assess vocabulary, reading comprehension, and mature themes/ subject matter. It'd would determine what grade level you were reading at then you were clear to choose any books up to 1 level above your current reading level. I wonder if a similar test could be made to evaluate kids for different movie and game ratings.

This is kinda irrelevant to the video game topic, but the 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?' music did an absolute number on my anxiety and still kinda does, even just by the intro music. What got me especially was the parts when you got the answer wrong or you reached the higher stage questions (£64k+). Pairing it with the host getting darker on stage... man. The theme was so well done and captured the fear and mounting pressure to get questions right. Chris Tarrant was a great host as well.

I have a British mother and father and I wasn't allowed to watch R rated movies until I was 16. When i was 9 i was at a friend's house for a sleepover and walked by his parent's watching Alien resurrection exactly at that scene when the scientists are looking into the hole the xenomorphs created with their acid blood. I stopped to see what they were looking for when the xenomorph pulls the scientist down into the pit. Suffice to say I was too young to watch that scene in particular and was terrified of aliens coming for me in the dark for many months later. Lol

I was 4 or 5 when I walked in on my dad watching Child’s play. I was supposed to be sleeping but I got up and snuck under my parents’ bed and watched the movie. I was so scared by Chucky that I kept getting rid of my dolls. Of course my mom had no idea why I was getting rid of them and would just put them back in my room, which freaked me out even more. I destroyed a lot of my dolls and scribbled all over their faces and my mom finally sat me down to figure out what was going on and explained that there was no way my dolls would do that. It’s funny but I still can’t sleep if there’s a doll facing my direction. 😂

The first rated R movie I can remember watching was Predator. My dad let me stay up and watch it when I was 8. Still one of my favorite movies. I'm not a big horror movie fan so I haven't seen that many, but the one I can remember being afraid of was The Exorcist. I watched it when I was around 10 and its one of the few movies that gave me nightmares back then. As for video games, I think the rating system is a good idea. Because whether or not you believe kids should have access to adult themes, not all parents want that for their children. However, the world of gaming may be a foreign concept to parents who still think all games are for kids and can be fooled into getting an inappropriate game. (No dad, GTA stands for Good Times Ahead. Everyone at school is playing it). The rating system gives parents that do want to restrict what their kids have access to the ability to do so while still letting others buy whatever for their kids no matter what. What shouldn't happen now is games getting banned for content reasons, or having companies force changes in content due to any perceived moral code. They just need to slap the appropriate rating on it, with reasons listed, and move on. Parents, if the sticker says rated for mature audiences due to sex, drugs, violence, and gore and you buy it anyway. You can't get mad at the production company.

Saying ESRB in the incorrect order to drive up comment engagement... You don't gotta do that but-- I see you; and I like your videos so much that I'm not even mad. Get that comment engagement! Lol

Scariest game for me was Laura Bow 2: The Dagger of Amon Ra for the PC. After one particular moment (the discovery of the second half of a body) I literally had to run and hide in bed. I was 12. Marrian Memorandum also had a couple freaky scenes, and the original XCOM (1994) had an ending that was really freaky.

Honestly though i feel it has more to do with parenting if you teach your kids properly and talk to them about tougher concepts when ever you feel they are ready they'll be more prepared and well adjusted about it over letting a screen babysit them and getting mad that someone made a product that wasn't made for primarily children

If we're talking old games, there was this section of one of the Harry Potter games where you enter some kind of store. Inside was a creepy atmosphere, and music, almost pitch black darkness, and an old guy screaming at you.

I don't know if it fucked me up at all, but I do remember that, when I was eleven years old and about to go on a school residential to Normandy, my dad decided that the best way to prepare me for the experience was to sit me down in front of the computer and play the beach scene from _Saving_ _Private_ _Ryan_

My favorite cartoon character as a child was Brock Samson who had a license to kill. I don't even want my niblings watching Rick and Morty. I was a different kind of kid and with our world as it is I don't want violence to be normal to them.

Lord, we watched Schindler's List in school. Had to get a permission slip signed. Two history classes watched it together. Yet, despite being late teens, one prudish teacher would rush up with a piece of paper to cover the mild nudity.
