If you're watching the 2023 US Open, you'll see an automated referee system called Hawkeye. More and more sports - tennis, soccer, basketball, baseball - are automating referee calls in an effort to make calls more accurate.
But cricket is where it all began. It all started with Dr. Paul Hawkins...
If you enjoyed this short, I think you might love our longer video on robot referees: • Why Human Referees Are...

Also a fun fact, Leg Before Wicket is also where the expression "That's a good shout" comes from. When cricket bowlers think a ball is LBW, they will turn to the umpire and shout "How's that!" and if the commentator thinks there is a good chance it is LBW, they will say, "that's a good shout".

@@howardtreesong4860 basically, the point of the game is not to block the stumps with your legs. It is to play the ball with your bat. It would be damn near impossible to get any batsman worth their salt out if they were allowed to block the stumps with their legs. (Btw, point of terminology, the stumps are the three sticks that hold up the bails, which are the two twig-like pieces of wood on top of the stumps, and together, they make up the wicket. Although "wicket" can mean other things too. No one said this sport isn't confusing.)

Cricket matches use a lot of other technology as well to make the umpires job easier: - microphones are placed inside the wicket in order to listen for the bat hitting the ball. Helps in case of caught behind. - Bails (wooden pieces on top of the wicket) with LEDs which light up if even moved slightly. Helps with runouts.

While playing cricket on streets, leg before wicket is something we do not even have, for the exact reason mentioned - it is subjective for naked eye. At best, we'd have a penalty system like if a batsman keeps blocking the ball with his leg/body voluntarily, he'll be "out" if he does a 3rd time. This was the closest we could do to avoid someone just using their legs to remain playing and not risking by playing the ball.

Actually, Sir Ian Taylor was the first to bring graphics and prediction imagery to sport. Starting with, and likely popularizing the Americas Cup, making it accessible to the common person that couldn't tell, thus was not interested in what was going on in a yacht race. With 45 years experience they now do this for many global sports remotely from New Zealand. Fun fact, Sir Ian was an ex band member and entertainer with little tech knowledge. He assembled a team of locals who completed in the IBM global programming competition (vs Cambridge, Yale etc) and won it. Faith in his team and ingenuity was his recipe for success.

Actually cricket use of video referrals started long before LBW, not sure of the date but could have been as much as a decade earlier, with run out calls. At first if the umpire was not sure they could ask for a video call on a run out. Now the umpires are almost totally out of the process and almost no run out call is made by the umpire. So when the LBW calls started happening people were at least familiar with the process. It was Australian TV that drove the early development, just as it did with in car cameras in motor sport. Australia was doing that long before anyone else even thought of it.

For those learning cricket it doesn't have to hit the leg. It only has to hit something other than the bat or by extension the hand holding the bat. If it hits the bat before hitting the body then the batsman should be considered not out. If it hits the bat AFTER hitting the body though it is still eligible to be out. There are other stipulations to the law but trying to explain that here would just confuse you.

One of the biggest differences between how this technology is used in cricket compared to other sports is the predictive element. In tennis, the actual path of the ball is measured and that is what is used to make a call. In baseball, that's what you see when they show the strike zone too. In cricket, the actual path is used to determine what happened up until the ball hits the batter's pad or body, but then a predicted path is calculated based on that data. to determine whether the ball would have hit the stumps. The funny thing is that some cricket fans complain about this, as though the on-field umpire isn't doing exactly the same thing but with less information.

It's not completely automated. It still relies on a tech to input the point of impact of the ball on the pitch and the batter. The computer then simulates the rest of the trajectory of the ball.

Cricket is where we actually needed that system since the unpire method were off and sometimes even biased in the early 2000s so it was a welcome chance but dont know about the other sports

Something you mentioned with MKBHD was building in subjectivity. This also leads in that area. An umpires call will stand if less than half the ball would have hit the wicket.

Even though iam not a Great Cricket enthusiast as my fellow indian citizens but I agree with the fact cricket has the most advanced level of umpiring system in comparison to any popular sports particularly football ( soccer) or any combat sports such as mma - boxing

Hey Cleo yes I’m one of those am one that love encouraging tech stories. Great video on Hawkeye with respected cricket especially since that has such historical importance. I think it is important to look at everything in the world, especially technology, though the lens of history. I don’t know if it’s because of my comment that you did that video but kudos and very well done. (As usual) And to your other viewer who commented on the choice of clip stated that this was the greatest cricketer, don’t forget about the great Gary Sobers, although he retired before the introduction DRS (Digital review system) so no video of him would have been appropriate. ❤

In about 1968, my father, an electrical engineer and cub scout den leader, was distressed to see arguments among fathers about the winner of pine wood derby races. He built an electric eye at the finish line that triggered a light at the lane of the winner. It immediately ended all disagreement and arguments.

What is also conveniently forgotten in the history of Hawkeye and the DRS (decision review system) is the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) stubbornly stood in the way of its implemention across cricket for YEARS until the International Cricket Council forced its implementation. I remember games as late as 2014 in Australia against India not having DRS because the BCCI refused to authorise its use, claiming it wasn't accurate.
