Thanks for this video, Ola. How many days are allowed for the defence counsels to institute an appeal in a criminal trial in Nigeria or the state in Nigeria you are practising? Rule 39 of the Sierra Leone Court of Appeal Rules (1985) is instructive on that.

In Nigeria, the notice of appeal must be filed in criminal matters within 90 days of judgment.

This is very enlightening Ola, thank you. Please I wish to know - are there any form of monetary expenses for the complainant in securing obtaining a prosecution council/lawyer or does the state handle it? Also, any other form of expenses?

The complainant lays a complaint at the police station, they take it up from there, up to the point where the state files a charge in court. It is not the complainant that secures a lawyer, it is the state that assigns a lawyer to the case once the DPP files a charge. A complainant may have to 'mobilise' the police, and take care of expenses of showing up in court and following the case up as it goes to trial etc.
