Hey Dr. Jordan Cooper, this sort of content is awesome. I always like watching the cultural commentary videos, very insightful and entertaining!

Regarding the Benedict Option, I prefer the Eggs Benedict formulation since, even though it is an American creation, its original components are culinarily derived from a variety of international sources: English muffin, Canadian bacon and Hollandaise (Dutch) sauce, in addition to the locally grown poultry product.

Hi Dr. Cooper, new listener here by way of the chat you had with Jonathan Pageau. Was loosely raised in an ELCA church (with traditional services) and had some issues, culminating in me throwing in the towel when I attended their 2018 national youth gathering and found a few of their speakers there atrocious. First, the infamous Nadia Bolz-Weber, who came across as a highly immature, angry child. But the worst speaker that absolutely blew my mind was an 8-year-old kid that said he was transgender. Completely insane. There was also a gay pride flag with the Luther rose on it in the arena where the services were held. I attended an LCMS high school that shocked me in the other direction. Hard-line moral positions on most issues, young earth creationism, and yet generally had more of a modern worship practice - a complete 180 from what I had grown up with. That really shook me up. Fast forward to college and now I'm sorting through things and gradually settling back into a (hopefully) more balanced confessional Lutheranism. Your videos have been greatly helpful for me, already being somewhat familiar with the ideas you discuss, but lacking knowledge of what the straight-on Lutheran approach is. Thanks!

If I have to take a rock concert along with my biblical literalism, I find that an easy adjustment to make.

@@FalconOfStorms You take a rock concert and eventually you lose your biblical literalism. Lex orandi, lex credendi. The only valid Lutheran churches are those who combine theological conservatism and a high church liturgy.

@@benmizrahi2889 Theological conservatism =/= Biblical Literalism. That is the issue with the mindset of many Confessional Lutheran synods, their confessional standards (and liturgical heritage) draw people in but their extra-confessional insistence on various forms of 19th/20th century Fundamentalism sours that offer... leading many to move on toward the Tiber or Bosphorous (which haven't been bogged down in Evangelical literalism, despite remaining "theologically conservative").

Also, just the fact that Just War Theory came into existence shows that the Christian Tradition has long thought about how "power/authority" is inevitable and must be _converted_ rather than rejected. There is such a thing as a Christian approach to statecraft, vis-a-vis a pagan approach (Tom Holland's Dominion is a good start in thinking about this -- he helped me to reject reactionism and embrace a healthy and historic Christian Liberalism).

My question is do the anabaptist church's just never preach the parable of the talents? That parable by itself refutes their position on that matter.
@vngelicath15802 жыл бұрын
It also occurs that these three approaches to cultural engagement: isolation/disengagement, transformationalism, vocation, correspond similarly to the 3 dominant Protestant eschatological systems... The anabaptist view is the most pessimistic and resembles Pre-millenialism, the theonomic model is the most optimistic and resembles Post-millenialism, and the vocational/Lutheran approach is neither completely pessimistic nor optimistic, resembling Amillenialism.

Thanks Dr Cooper. There are significant commonalities in how you describe the progress of the Lutheran reformation in continental Europe and the Presbyterian reformation here in Scotland. John Knox who led the Scottish reformation certainly had his faults ( I'm neither a Presbyterian nor a Calvinist) but his vision for the nation was astonishing. He planned for there to be land in each parish owned by the national church so that throughout the land there would be university educated ministers, schools to be attended by all children of all classes where they would become literate and thus able to read the Bible; and there would also be funds to support the poor. This was never fully implemented but Knox's vision rolled down the centuries. My Grandmother was born into a poor rural family in the 1890s. She had to leave her village school at 14 to work in a shop to supplement family income. In her eighties she could still recite her Latin verbs. A significant part of her early Bible knowledge came in the company of her own blind Grandmother. As a young girl my Grandmother sat reading the Bible aloud whilst her own Grandmother sat listening and smoking her pipe. What must God think of Western nations which have squandered a Godly inheritance? Lord have mercy. God bless America. God bless Scotland.

“Change in culture does not come from the bottom but from the top…change in culture comes not just from elites, but disaffected elites.” What we have seen unfold before us is the political strategy of Antonio Gramsci, who argued that communism cannot come to the West as long as the workers held a common culture with the elites. The lower levels must drive the cultural change. Gramsci’s specific target was Christianity; this was the culture that must be crushed. The point made via the quote above is meaningful in this regard - which “disaffected” elites want to sponsor/drive this change, giving legs to the lower classes? Those who wish to move to a centralized (inherently communist) society. It is Gramsci put into action. This perfectly describes the democrat party in the US today, a party made up of the most elite members of society and those who claim the most grievances. Strange bedfellows, unless one understands the connections as noted. As to the proper role for the Church…love the Lord, love your neighbor. However, without a proper understanding of a natural law ethic - starting with man’s purpose or telos - we see how a bastardized Christian idea of love has been very effectively used by the enemies of Christ - even within churches that nominally claim the label “Christian.”

So if change only occurs on the institutional level, what do those of us who do not have any connections to those do to create change, say those of us who live in rural Iowa? Can we? While I think this is probably pretty accurate, do I simply wallow and accept that change can only be done by institutions where there is a mutual resentment? I don't want to hide, I want to take action, but I don't want to engage with things like universities or mass media, whether we share a worldview or not. I want to be active, but I dislike those things for what they are, not for what they presently do.

all major denominations of Christianity are "fallen"... one thing that I find curious is how few people talk about the signs of secularism and apostasy giving in Scriptures that are to happen ""at the end of the aion(age)""... the pattern is quite clear: Matthew 24:10 "At that time (the end of the age) many will turn away from the faith" 1 Timothy 4:1 "The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits"... Revelation 13:7 "The beast was permitted to wage war against the saints and to conquer them, and it was given authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation..." I really think there is no academic way out of this mess, I think it will happen like in the days of the Roman empire, it will require "the action of the Spirit" on the rulers... what can you really do when scripture reveals the whole pattern to you and that the Logos will allow "The Beast to wage war against the Saints and to conquer them, and it was given authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation..."

It's probably unfair to zero in on a side issue. I'm just curious about your discussion of what we are doing when we go to church. Is the list you present your definition of worship? Maybe I'm off target here, but I've always understood the primary rationale for gathering together to be worship. You may have discussed this elsewhere and if so I apologize for bringing it up here.

I think you're missing the point of being elite. It's a small club and you're not in it, no matter how smart and rich you are. It comes with adopting a whole suite of mannerisms, beliefs, and affectations and some other requirements and signifiers that I'm missing. This is a big part of why CRT and similar ideologies are spreading like wildfire. It has successfully been imposed as an elitist fad. If you don't agree with it, they know you're a social poser.

I've only been wrong once, and that's when I thought I was wrong. Maybe the world's most thought-provoking one-liner is "Eat right. Stay fit. Die anyway." It's sad but true -- no matter what you do, you will die. This is because you have sinned against God. Let's see if that's true: Have you ever lied (even once)? Ever stolen (anything)? Jesus said, "Whoever looks upon a woman to lust after her, has committed adultery already with her in his heart." Ever looked with lust? If you have said "Yes" to these three questions, by your own admission, you are a lying, thieving, adulterer at heart; and we've only looked at three of the Ten Commandments. How will you do on Judgment Day? Will you be innocent or guilty? You know that you will be guilty, and end up in Hell. That's not God's will. He provided a way for you to be forgiven. He sent His Son to take your punishment: "God commended His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Jesus then rose from the dead and defeated death. God promises everlasting life to all those who confess and forsake their sins, and trust in Jesus Christ. Please do that today . . . you may not have tomorrow. See John 14:21 for a wonderful promise. Then read the Bible daily and obey what you read. God will never let you down.Visit needgod.com
