How daily routines are different since moving to the Netherlands from the United States

Since moving to the Netherlands, I have noticed my daily habits and routines changing in subtle ways. In this vlog, I take you through a day in the life of an American living in the Netherlands, and point out the little differences between Dutch and American culture. I also share a big life update!

Congrats on the wedding! On the lunch thing: if we have leftovers, we either save a lot of them to have one day we eat all of it for dinner (kliekjesdag) or my dad will eat the leftovers for lunch..but on a slice of bread! Also your body temperature needs to go down in order for you to be able to sleep, so having a lower temperature at night makes sense. Also my mom always told me I would wake up with a headache if I didnt open my window at night, because you need fresh air or something

Gefeliciteerd met jullie huwelijk. Bij het gemeentehuis is het registreren van een huwelijk vooral het aangaan van een overeenkomst tussen 2 mensen met allerlei juridische consequenties. Vandaar dat het wat zakelijk kan overkomen. Als je de oven verwarmt tot 50 graden, dan uitzet en je deeg afgedekt in de oven zet, rijst het fantastisch.

We lived there for 24 years (1996 - 2020) at number 1 Jee, the one with the balcony. The perfect spot to see all the boats passing by, especially Sinterklaas en the Utrecht Canal Pride!

Congratulations on the marital adventure. I also sleep with the window open. Never turn on the heater in the bedroom cause i am only there to sleep. Even in the winter sometimes my feet are getting so hot that I have stick them from under the covers otherwise I can't sleep. Most of the times I notice that my body is quite adaptable with temperatures. In the summer I sleep under the same duvet as in wintertimes. I never change it. So I use the same duvet with -5 degrees celcius as well with +30 degrees celcius.

Savour those sunny days, I also went out for a long walk that day and stocked up on vitamine D. Lowering the temp at night helps you sleep better, I take it down to 17.5 celcius. In the summer I usually open up a window but not in the other seasons. Enjoy married life, it takes some getting used to saying wife... we will be checking your usage of the correct term going forward ;)

Concratulatoins! 💖 and concerning sleeping temperatures: no heating or airco and big single glass windows. Thus loads of blankets in the winter and just a sheet in summer. It is so wastefull to me to use so much energy and sleeping is way better.

Excellent! I also make my own bread, especially German Kaiserbroetchen. The dough on Saturday, leave to rise during the night and divide it into daily portions for the week on Sunday. It's so easy. Regarding the mailboxes, I wouldn't be able to find a mailbox where I live even if I would be paid to do so. Funny enough I had to send some to documents to the Netherlands and had to look up on Google maps where the post office was! Mail seems still to be a thing in The Netherlands and we are supposed to be a developing country.

I am also an American living in NL and the cold lunches here were a surprise to me. The first couple of years I use to eat a hot lunch like my dinner leftovers but now I usually just eat a small dutch sandwich. Funny that happened to you too. Congrats on getting married :)

BTW, can you tell something about the registration of a US marriage in the Netherlands? Which documents does it require at "de burgerlijke stand" and how easy or difficult is it?
