The cornea actually heals super fast, in a couple of days (I should know, I scratched mine when I was little). It can scar, however.

My cornea was scratch as a kid. I remember not seeing clearly because it was right across my vision. the optometrist gave me some drops and an eye patch. After a couple or so weeks my cornea was repaired. That being said I don’t like contacts and I don’t doubt that it will cause damage to your eyes.. if not the contact then your finger nail when removing them! Bad stuff!
@StevenKraft6 жыл бұрын
Jake, thanks for this post. Very important stuff. For years as a late teen I had to take a long break from wearing contacts because I had developed small polyps or something similar on the eyelids. I'm guessing there were - and still are - scratches on the cornea. It's frustrating as I find I can drop a half diopter with contact lenses and also have faster improvement than when I wear glasses. Moreover as you noted there is the peripheral vision benefit as well. Your epilogue is noteworthy as well. Urban life in bright places facilitates the fastest improvement in my vision. Particularly in places with signs and in a spot that encourages walking, biking (or motorbiking, it seems). Without a doubt, building a life that is less based on the screen, and that invites spending more time outside with various objects on which to focus, seems to help greatly. The myopia is a telling effect of a broader pattern of our screen-based lifestyle. Thanks, Jake.

Thanks for the kind words! And yes... getting outside progressively more, ditching the screen a little more, it all adds up.

I wonder if it's because contacts correct much better than glasses

I've been wearing contact lenses for over 2 decades, (since I was 13 or so). I blink often, as a normal habit, and I would consider myself to be a very well adapted contact lens wearer. The most important thing I can say is use good lenses, be conscious of the lenses, and if they don't feel right, they aren't right. I also believe that contacts have a far greater clarity than poly lenses in glasses, and my vision has been totally stable for nearly that same time. Of course, there are occasional (once a year) irritation which require not wearing them for 3-4 days.

I'm glad I saw this video. I used to wear contacts a lot back in like 7th and 8th grade. They were circle lenses so they were larger and probably heavier on my eyes. I was considering wearing color contacts again, but now I don't really think it's worth the risk especially since my eyes are more sensitive now which may have something to do with my previous contact lense use.

Ever heard of the epithelium? Your cornea has a fluid on the front that does heal itself.... that’s how cataract surgery heals...
@endmyopia4 жыл бұрын
A fluid that heals itself. 🤔 Fascinating stuff! Definitely don’t check out corneal flaps from LASIK that never properly heal. Or corneal thinning research from contact lens wear. Keep drinking the koolaid, my friend! 🍻
@jasonmerth51214 жыл бұрын
Jake Steiner Jake Steiner of course there are risks to lasik. The cornea is being shaped far further down then the epithelium during lasik, it’s an extremely delicate process and that’s why not everyone is a candidate. what you’re failing to note is that there are different types of contacts, the most prescribed type of contact, called a scleral lens doesn’t even come in contact with the actual cornea... it rests on the white of your eye and comes over the cornea resting on a bed of fluid... corneal abrasion does heal as the epithelium of the eye is the fastest regrowing cellular structure in the entire body. Please do some actual research before you trick an entire group of people who need glasses to not wear them and cause them all to get into car accidents. My favorite part of all of your videos so far is you saying that you ARENT any type of eye care professional, what little research you’ve done optometrists spend years at school and in residency learning to better the people around them. Sit down.

@@jasonmerth5121 when did he say not to wear any correction? He stated that is not normal to have an object sitting on your eyeball. You should be more objective in your thoughts... what if even after all these years, we don't realize the true negative effects (however miniscule) of contracts? Isn't "modern" medicine just now realizing that the appendix and tonsils actually have a purpose?
@jasonmerth51213 жыл бұрын
@@ojp1692 yes modern medicine is just now realizing that. But guess what? That’s MEDICINE being practiced by DOCTORS. Jake is neither a doctor nor a research scientist. @ojp16923 жыл бұрын
@@jasonmerth5121 we are saying the same thing just differ on the outcome... as you say "current evidence suggests"; so we agree there is room for error (albeit slight). So i agree with Jake when he says only wear contacts in certain situations, otherwise glasses are the safest option.

My optometrist was very concerned about the topic of water so she explained it to me this way: When contacts get in touch with water, there may be microorganisms that get attached to the lenses and continue to live there. That would naturaly lead to infections or other issues. It's not the act of touching water that's dangerous, but continuing to wear the same lenses afterwards. Her suggestion would be to only wear single-use lenses and throw them out after getting out of the pool (or any water related activity). I hope this helps someone.
