Every ship that uses a propeller, subs included, makes a characteristic, signature sound that is identified by every talented sonar operator. The sound is so specific the ship itself can often be identified. Speed, size and number of propellers provides these signatures. Water temperatures and sea state affects the sound but surface ships are simply hard to hide due to what it takes to propel gigantic hunks of steel through water. Subs have the extra bonus of moving deeper and hiding within temperature layers (thermals) along with incredible engineering to hide its movement.

Answers to your questions: 1. By the passing of time, ship designers became more and more aware via experiments and testing that what types of propellors are to be used for making the least amount of disturbance in water and hence, least noise, that's why a perry is quieter than a Knox and a Tico is quieter than Belknap. 2. Submarines do not communicate under water, for conveying information and receiving orders, they have to come to periscope depth and raise their comms mast to send and receive data via SATCOM. 3. Each class of ship had a unique set of propellors used in them, or some variations at least, this sound of props was recorded by the subs and was later used in the recognition of the class of ships, in some case, the sound of the props was so unique and clear that not only the class of the vessel, but the exact vessel could be identified by name ! 4. Missiles that are fired subs have to pushed out of the launch tube via compressed gases which are stored in side in container cells, this provides the lift to the missile to break through the water and once it is in air, the engines fire up and the missile goes off to the target.

@@Arks1103 I mean, the way Soviet subs operated this would be used pretty often as they operated on the idea of escorting the Boomers and Guided Missile Boats. The idea was that they knew NATO was out looking for them, and if the order to launch came, the SSNs of NATO would take a shot to stop them. It should be noted however, that this actually made it easier for the NATO subs to locate and track the Soviet Missile Boats as while they were a "hole in the water", their escorts weren't nearly as quiet. The whole system was very cumbersome and vulnerable to E.W. interference as well as physical destruction by Carrier- borne Aircraft. One of the reasons the Harpoon ASM missile was developed was to be able to attack the Echo sub whilst it was on the surface (where it had to stay whist it's SSN - 3's were in flight). The lead SSN - 3 would transmit it's radar picture back to the sub for mid - flight guidance update by the Weapons Officer via the (Front Piece C) data TX -RX antenna you saw rotate on the front part of the Conning tower. Once updated the boat could then dive and clear the datum. Oh and yes this sim is OUTSTANDING!!

As far as is know, the P-700 has never been fired in anger. They are still in operational use, on the Pyotr Veliky, the only currently active Kirov Class battlecruisers and probably still several Oscar II subs. Reports are that it is now finally being phased out in favor of the Zircon missile. The P-800 export variant, called "Yakhont" . was purchased by Syria in the land-attack role and reportedly used in 2016 against ISIS targets, by either Syrian or Russian forces. The P-800 has also been used by Russia against targets in Ukraine. In my part of the ship we did it the really old fashioned way by writing on plexiglass with grease pencils and I can't think of a slower and less informative way to pass information. It wasn't until the late 1990s that I got to work with NTDS and while I am not going to give you any details, I think I can tell you that the tactical display looks pretty much like the one in your game. How much information it has and how accurate it is is dependent upon what is known and what is true and what can be communicated by the observing party. That information can be shared with all assets in theater and with higher.

Ship identification for submarines is largely by their acoustic signature, of which every ship is slightly difference, and sonar techs on subs have been logging other ships and subs since the 1950's. By the acoustics they can tell the ship's speed, prop speed, and heading. If that ship has been positively ID'd previously- they can tell with pretty good accuracy what ship it is.

There are certain harmonics that are common to certain parts of the ship, screw type, shaft, engine rotation (diesel/turbine/nuclear) etc. They record these sounds usually as dhips leave port and then build a database.

Faster you set the time, more sensitive the missile controls becomes and at some point (5-10x) missiles simply cannot fly straight. Most likely it happens, because game logic uses frame time to calculate physics and missile "autopilot" reaction. More compression means faster flight andbigger inputs in the same time period. Developers should account for the time compression.

Everyone keeps talking about propellers as if that's the only source of spund on a ship/sub. Every individual vessel will have a unique combination of propulsion, power plant, and other electronic or mechanical systems that produce specific sound profiles. If, for example, you have 20 ships of a class, but only 3 of them have a particular variant of power plant, then they will stand out from the rest. If one of those 3 also has a particularly loose/unbalanced ventilation fan somewhere, it can then be identified as a particular ship of that class. Every change in design, hastily made repair, overhaul, or manufacturing defect can contribute to the sound profile. Spies planted in dockyards and "fishing boats" or even tailing subs can gather these acoustic profiles along with visual reference of each ship to compile the records needed for identification
@LordOfCinder855 сағат бұрын
Generaly ships have unique sound profiles. With the proper data you can at least identify the class of ship. If your data is detailed enough or a ship has a very unique sound profile, it is even possible to identify individual ships within a class. Even today making audio recordings of ships and submarines and analysing them is very important. Pretty much every time when vessels from different nations are close enough, someone is going to be listening and later analysing all the sonar data. Radar emissions can let you identify ships to a degree too.

I would say yes these missiles are still a threat for a couple of reasons. The first being that the Russians do upgrade their equipment over time and missiles are no exception. So what might look like a 1980's missile on the surface is probably not a 1980's missile under the metal skin. The second reason is that the P-700 is nuclear capable. You could in theory have an Oscar class submarine with 24 nuclear tipped anti-ship missiles and just one of them needs to get through to delete a carrier battlegroup.

Interesting scenario. I suspect like the previous surface based 50 mile range scenario's, it's not necessarily realistic. Kill chain. Break it at any link and you don't get the kill. Need to find the target. Classify the target (warship, merchant, etc). Identify the target as friend / foe / neutral. If you're using off board sensors for this, then you have to relay that info to the shooter. So, the hypothesis of this scenario is that the Victor gets within 40 miles and can pass targeting info to the Oscar. I suspect in reality, with ASW helo's up and S-3's up and depending on where they are, with P-3's up, it would be challenging for that Victor to get close enough to get said targeting info. What's a 70's-80's carrier have, 10 of the S-3's? I suspect they'd have anywhere from 2-4 up at any given time scouring the seas well out beyond what the helo's from the escorts can cover. Additionally, I suspect the commander of the sub isn't in (what shall we say to get past the YT "sensors") self deleting mind frame he'll only shoot if he thinks he can do so without getting near insta-deleted by a helo, S-3, ASROC, etc. Perhaps try a scenario where you know roughly where the AC Battle group is (say from 2 hour old satellite info) and you're trying to close in to get exact data with that Victor. The CV group is on full ASW defense mode.....can you get in close enough to get an adequate ID? Throw in 4 x 50% chance neutral freighters, or have one of the boys build the exact scenario and give it a try.

About the behavior of the SS-N-19, i read about something called Boids algorithm from 1984 wich models flock behavoir mathematically and was, according to wikipeda, used for LOCAAS in 1998. Would be interessting to know if the missile had enought computing power for something like this or if their maneuvers were preprogrammed.

Hold a plastic bottle underwater then let go. It will shoot up out of the water which is a simplified example of what the missile does.

If memory serves, I believe both Iran and Iraq fired Chinese silkworms. I am not sure if the Slava fired any missiles in the current war. CAP: were the E-2s lit? If so, I think Tomcats could have shot them...

If the Russians have 'obviously peaceful' fishing boats or otherwise 'civilian' ships in the vicinity then the sub would either raise an antenna or stream an antenna near the surface and use QRP to send them information that would be relayed. Alternatively narrow beam satellite comms, for which they also need to surface. Mind you if the carrier group has combat air patrols and hawkeyes aloft, detection would be possible. Naval ASW patrol airplanes like Neptune (1960's) or Orion (1970's-onward) could passively detect subs using Magnetic Anomaly Detection, or actively using sonobuoy. The carrier group would have helo's with hydrophones or sonobuoy equipment At the time, the carrier would be the main body, where the destroyers and frigates would form a screen facing the threat bearing. Oh dear, the PC game "Harpoon" had all this on board.. Russian subs from the 50's and 60's were very noisy, especially when sailing over 20 knots. During the Cuba crisis the US had SOSUS buoys on the Atlantic seabed, and could track Foxtrots racing towards Cuba when things heated up.

The carrier group would have ASW to hunt it down after first launch 2nd and 3rd salvo's may have been interupted

Normaly the sub has to raise a comm mast to send the targeting data and maybe it will be located or they use fishing boats whit spy equipment

Hey Cap, nice to see you having a play with subs, one thing you missed every carrier group also has ASW ships and sub with it, simply for defence against other subs our sub would have detected the Russian subs as they left their home port tracked them and as soon as they were in range our sub would have destroyed them.
