Having mucked around with whips alot when I was younger... - Your choice of a bullwhip for this was perfect. A bullwhip with a longer handle would've decreased the physcial effort. Bullwhips have the best accuracy. And snake whips, but they are difficult. - The vertical cracking technique you tried towards the start of the video is actually the easiest to learn, the most accurate, and I would argue the most powerful, and the safest. - The best tip I can give you.... to help you with any technique, is that whatever movement you are doing, when done correctly,actually sends a coil down the length of the whip, which makes it crack away from you. Even done slowly will result in a crack. The reducing width of the whip, increase the speed the coil moves, leverage is in your favour. Most techniques require a steady application of power through the handle, not a sudden jerk, thats why you whipped yourself. 🙂 - Adding steel to a whip at the end is EXTREMELY dangerous. It has a heavier density than the cracker and leather, and can break towards you, and send sharpnel your way. - If destroying something or hitting something hard with accuracy, you actually want to strike with the last bit of leather down the length of the whip (Knot conencting the cracker), not the cracker itself. There is a one thing about the technique that Anthony De Longis exploited for better control and accuracy with a whip. He calls it the De Longis loop. The idea is to loop the spine so the whip has a direction to go than flailing wildly. You would have to watch his videos to see how it's done. There's also a mythbusters episode where Adam learns how to use the whip properly from Anthony De Longis. De Longis worked with Michelle Pfeifer and Harrison Ford. Great job with the effort. Pretty awesome how much work you put into it. :)

I may not be any kind of skilled with a whip, specifically, but a lot of the insights you come to in this process are fairly great and applicable across martial arts as a whole. I found my love for whips when i first made one out of braided ductape (its quite good for a beginner). Until recently, i moved to a paracord one, i made myself as well. If anyone is wanting to get into using whips, i would make a couple of suggestions. 1- Know that you are likely going to get struck at some point. Its just a fact, and while it is highly unlikely it will kill you, your eyes, ears, groin, ect, all should be protected while learning. Arms and legs will likely be your first hit though lol, dont worry, you will live :P. 2- Try making your own whip. While buying one is easy, you would be amazed at the steps, time, and patience it takes to make a whip. It will give you a respect for them, and a understanding of how they work, this is not mandatory, but just a suggestion on my part. 3- Dont be dumb with it. Might seem silly, but in this day and age, i feel the need to say, a whip should never be used against another person, animal, or object of value, because they can do remarkable damage. There is a reason circus acts would use one to keep a lion or tiger at bay from hurting them. They are loud, and they hurt like a bitch. That being said, they can also be vary fun, and a excellent form of working out XD.

@@themoonstarsisters While i agree, i believe the whip was more used to scare them. But i could be vary wrong, i dont know alot about ringleader's(i think thats what they are called) using whips. I believe in most cases, it was like using a whip to move cattle, number 1, they are strong, and thus, its the sound, more then the sting that moves them or keeps them at bay. But yes, i agree, you should never use a whip, unless its in a life of death situation. For example. Bears hate loud noises, so if i saw one in the woods, and wanted to be safe, give a couple of cracks and try to scare it off. Bear is unharmed, and hopefully you are too...

You found it hard because you miss on the Physics principle behind it. You don't just swing it around randomly - you need to create a wave to propagate through the whip. There is a reason why it is thick on the handle and it thins out as it moves along its length: the energy you impart to it at the handle is specific and the wave you create accelerates down its length so as to fulfil the energy retention principle since the whip becomes lighter and lighter as the wave moves along it and the mass of the medium that the wave propagates through is a factor in the energy it is carrying. So in order for the energy to remain constant the speed must increase. So instead of just swinging it like a flail you must create a wave onto it, like how we see the pros do.

The crack of a whip is actually created by it breaking the sound barrier. You are hearing it make a sonic boom. They are powerful and obviously being on the receiving end of a whip lashing when cracked properly would be far more than just unpleasant. They can create severe lacerations that cut straight to the bone. They are not a joke and also not a toy.

You are learning very well mike! But I just wanted to give you a tip on the cattleman’s crack. I noticed you were barely lifting the whip, and don’t be afraid to put the whip behind your head, as long as you create a loop on the whip you don’t have to put much power, and it will go to your side.

It reminded me of when I first learned how to shoot a bow and arrow. I took archery at summer camp when I was 11 years old. I was literally dropping arrows on the ground before I could set them up and hold them in place. An hour a day, 3 days a week and I won the award for the most bullseyes that month. (54). Practice makes perfect, but you got to stick with it.

Where your technique is falling short is you're doing a lateral crack. I suggest looking into the physics behind a whip crack and how the conservation of energy plays into it.

been a whip cracking for about a year, if anything you could've focused on the basic cattleman's crack which shows what you actually want to create the sonic boom. By creating a loop in the whip, and the loop becoming progessively faster as the size of the whip decreases, it increases the speed of the whip until it breaks the sound barrier. if you want pointers i'd be happy to show you what i know

Hey Mike, i saw that exatcly from 3:51 on that video a Cola from Pingo Doce, a portuguese brand, is there with you, you appear under a bridge, the Vasco da Gama bridge in Lisbon, Portugal. Like at 6:31 to 7:22 in the video you appear at a skate park close to the bridge, exatcly the one called "Skate Expo", exactly here 38°47'13.2"N 9°05'29.7"W (38.78731, -9.09175). Around 8:11 you appear to be close to a abandoned place, and in the background you can see the"25 de Abril" bridge, i calculated you distance and point of view to a tower of the bridge and the abandoned place is called "Quinta da Arealva" at these coordenations 38°47'14.3"N 9°05'30.3"W. (PS: I did this digging because i saw the coke from Pingo Doce) I was just wondering, where you there because you were on vacation or something? If you dont mind me asking of course. Cool for you to have visited Portugal
