Hello from a St Andrews alumna! Very inspiring 😀 interesting what you say about country settings. Aside from this, I understand that Etsy personalizes search results by country, so that US-based stores would always show up in search results for a US-based searcher. Thus, we outside the US are at a disadvantage right from the start, no matter how good our SEO is. Great to hear of your success, therefore.

If the businesses abide by the law of the country we live, does that mean that 1. US sellers don't need to offer return/exchanges to UK/EU customers and 2. UK/EU sellers need to offer return/exchanges to US customers? (distance selling law)

Great interview Cassiy! Regarding VAT reclaim, if you are VAT registered in UK then yes you pay VAT across on all sales you make but you can reclaim VAT on your purchases. So, yes as explained you can claim back VAT on fees but you can also claim back on any other business purchases you make that have charged you VAT, for example if Printify charge VAT on the product purchase, you can claim that back, if you pay for any business subscriptions or training and they charge VAT then that can also be claimed back. Essentially you can reduce your sales VAT bill quite substantially depending on the type of business you run and your purchase levels. In some cases you can wipe out you Sales VAT bill or even received a "refund" if your purchase VAT out weighs your sales VAT. It does get complicated with different rates applied to different products etc so always important to get proper advice form an accountant or VAT expert and calculate the likely impact for your specific business ☺

Hi, I am also EU based, and wondering why would there be VAT collected on any sells that starts its journey from Printify, USA base to any USA based customer? I didn't understand this in the interview. The product is not leaving the border and VAT is collected through the movement of the product. If it enters any EU country, then yes, there is VAT issue, but if it is moving within the US, it doesn't matter where you are sitting in the EU as a seller. Is it the way you mean it?
@Apprendre-Photo10 ай бұрын
@@nicole4dance That's also my understanding of the VAT system. I have another business (not Etsy or POD), and whenever I (rarely) invoice something outside of the EU, I don't add VAT because it's not applicable. Hence I don't see why I should apply VAT to a US-made t-shirt shipped to the US. But I'd like more details on this, as maybe there's something I'm missing.

Great video! Even though I am in Canada, our tax system has similarities where we sellers have to pay GST (and for me, PST as well) on ALL of the Etsy fees. So for example, the relisting fee of .20USD (which is about .28CAD) then gets charged an extra few cents for GST and PST. It adds up fast.

Hi, I’ve been watching your videos and a lot of other peoples videos and I’m seeing a lot of creators saying that their stores are getting shut down and they’re not able to access customer emails, even one creator, said she had taken a deposit from a customer and etsy shut her down For no reason basically AI caught a word and shut it down automatically and they wouldn’t reach back out to her and she had this person‘s money and no contact information… And on consumer affairs website Etsy has a one star. So I just don’t understand you guys make it sound so great and then I see all this other stuff so which is it? Some of the VAT information in this video is not correct. VAT is a tax paid by the purchaser (the seller merely collects it and remits to the government), and the obligation to pay VAT on goods is determined by where the product is received by the purchaser. If the shipping address for a sale is in the US, VAT is not payable regardless of where the seller is located or where the product is posted from (note: US sales taxes may be payable).
@Apprendre-Photo10 ай бұрын
That's my understanding too. There will be VAT charged on Etsy fees though, as they're invoiced to a EU or UK seller. In that case, it'd be better to register for VAT, as that could be paid back by the government, and the seller would only pay VAT on sales made in the UK/EU (so not much).

@fiorella57178 ай бұрын
I think is a headache trying to reach both usa and europe at the aame time even thought the product is relevant for ntoh because the printify providers for apparel are focused on one or the another. So if you choose europe for example then you sacrifice usa (by having crazy high shippign costs and shipping times) :(

Etsy is adding VAT by itself automatically to the sales where VAT applies, there is no need to raise your price extra
@KateTheMama11 ай бұрын
Right but depending where you live the seller is also charged VAT on the Etsy fees. I live in Poland and I'm paying 23% VAT on every Etsy fee, including adspend. It comes to about 6% of my total earnings every month.
@paulinamaszka174711 ай бұрын
@@KateTheMama that's correct. So if you are a VAT payer then you can deduct this VAT later from your monthly VAT deduction for Urząd Skarbowy. VAT is neutral if you are a VAT payer.
