When rolling down the strat TONE pot to 4, you have to use a compressor pedal to boost the volume because of the amplitude drops in half when rolling down the strat TONE pot to 4. I think gilmour used 2 compressors pedals in series both set differently with the TONE pot set to 4.
@mustyguitar6 ай бұрын
that's a lot of information for different situations. Because, on "PULSE" he used 2 compressors, but he also used EMG pickups, which have SPC or EXG. Not a vintage style pickup tone knobs. On the other hand, I don't think Gilmour used tone knob on the original recording or he even used any pedals. He just went straight into the mixing desk. He may or may not used the tone knob, I have no idea about that. I used tone knob to simulate that sound going into the pedals and amp. I wouldn't use tone knob if I were going straight into the mixing desk too.

You have been a great inspiration to me! 100% Credit to your videos, I have sold my Line 6 HD POD 500x digital guitar modeler and purchased many of your recommended analog pedals and my tone is now better than ever! Thank you so much for your videos! I will be retiring soon and will soon need to sell about 5 of my guitars and downgrade in size from my Marshall 1960 lead 1/2 stack and DSL 100h tube head as my wife & I will be moving from very large house into a very small 40ft 5th wheel toy hauler and hitting the road full time. I would love to see your review of the new "Fender Tone Master Pro" guitar modeler and see what kind of Gilmour tones can you get out of her? please please! I cant think of anyone else better on the planet other than David Gilmour himself to review this new product!

@@mustyguitar the SD1 is the one that has a similar circuit to the TS. The OD3 is similar to the BD2 circuit with some slight differences. I've read that Boss almost called it a BD3 but opted to label it OD3 and it got colored Yellow. Its worth checking out. Very similar side by side but less gain on tap and mellower highs.

Great tone and tutorial! In the four note part in "Syd's theme" Gilmour also used a Leslie 147 in combination with a Fender (Dual Showman Reverb) amp, his Hiwatt amp, and the phase 90 in an open big space studio room (studio 1 Abbey Road). That's the magic trick to get the "church" "bell-like" sound of Syd's Theme: Leslie (or Leslie simulator) + Phase 90 + lots and lots of reverb (to create a big open space sound).
@mustyguitar4 ай бұрын
Now, that's probably true, I don't know how much leslie in the signal chain though, for months, I've been thinking about if there's a leslie or not, if there is, how much leslie is there? Just makes me want to spend money again, so I tend to shut my eye on the thing :D
@OysteinSvendsen4 ай бұрын
@@mustyguitar Totally understandable! I suppose a Leslie simulator pedal (Strymon Lex, Neo Ventilator, Neo micro ventilator or more bugdet friendly options) does the trick, blending/mixing in the "Leslie" signal with the overall sound in Syd's theme + lot's of reverb and maybe delay pedal (to mimic Binson Echorec) to create a big open space sound. One can only guess how much Leslie in the signal Gilmour used. There's a lot of pictures on the net with Gilmour in studio 1 with a Leslie in the room together with Dual Showman, Hiwatt and Echorec, Bjørn Riis from Gilmourish has pictures and lots of articles and knowledge on this stuff. I tried to post a link to a picture in the comment but my comment got blocked by KZbin. Keep up the excellent work! 👍

This song has my favorite Pink Floyd tone. I could never quite get it until I got a PowerBoost. That pedal is THE pedal for WYWH. I know you can get close with a Blues Driver or the EHX Hot Wax, but there’s nothing like the PowerBoost. It’s probably the best overdrive pedal no one outside Gilmour enthusiasts talk about. I recently upgraded my delay. A got myself a TC Alter Ego, which is a cousin of the Flashback, just with more vintage sounding delays (even the 2290 on it is modulated). It comes with an Echorec 2 setting, which nails early Floyd delays (I’m pretty sure it can be loaded onto the FlashBack through the Tone Print option). I was amazed how much that slight change from my analog delay pedal would fine tune the tone. Of course, the hard part is learning to play like Gilmour, learning the timing and getting those bends right. At the end of the day, your finger tips will be callused but you will sound awesome.

you know what? my favorite tone from pink floyd too. the cleanness, sharpness, phaser, the vocal part, it's just magic! definitely the best tone of Gilmour's career in my opinion.

I have Texas Specials in my 1992 SRV Strat and in that guitar they do not sound as bright as the sounds you are getting in yours. But the SRV Strat does not have a maple neck like yours, maybe that explains it. I was thinking that in the 4 note mystery arpeggio that he used one or even two compressors to get that massive sustain he's seeming to get there.

I use a T-Rex Comp Nova compressor, a Mooer Pure Boost (RC Booster clone) or my Devtech 18v Power Booster (Coloursound clone), MXR Phase 95 (or Harmonic Tremolo), and my Keeley Echoes delay (Echorec style). I used to run a Rothwell Love Squeeze into a Boss BD-2 Blues Driver, Phase 90, Boss DD-7 or Maxon AD-9 Pro delay. That worked well but the BD-2 wasn't quite right, although with my Mooer E-Lady it's perfect for Run Like Hell. Guitars are either my Mexican Fender Deluxe Player's Strat or Epiphone SG w/Seymour Duncan P90 "Buckers" (splittable dual P90s). Amps either my Laney Cub12r and/or Fender Blues Junior IV with the Fromel mods and a L'il Texas Neo speaker. If I need more headroom, amps are HiWatt T20/10 head+Fender Bassbreaker 112 cab loaded with a Celestion V-Type and/or my Laney VC30 2x10" (UK model with the Jensens).

The switching of the pickups is pretty common for him. Remember, he records multiple solos for his songs, and then they mix together the parts that he likes the most to build the solo in studio. So it would make sense that he would try different pickups, slightly different tones for each run. 😎👍
