The one thing that's keeping me interested in the this remake is that it sounds like Motive knew what to do to keep the game intense for old and new players alike. The fact that they can create around 400 events in-game to make you second guess yourself, to make you freak out at nothing, to put enemies in places that weren't scripted like in DS1, that is what has me hopeful. I'm not sure that the "light and dark" is more important than audio and ambiance (those are IMO what make something genuinely scary), but this is definitely taking steps in the right direction.

What Callisto Protocol gets right is the color. Darker doesn't mean scarier if you don't get the color correctly. RE2 remake suffered from this by having near sepia gray tones at times when it looked great with vibrant colors and even scarier.

@@ThatGuy-eq9mz Performance issues were game breaking, the game itself is very slow paced; being criticized as a "crawling/shimmy through this gap" simulator to mask loading screens. And the combat is extremely boring and repetitive, there's basically no enemy variety at all. The security robots were all hyped up in trailer footage, but in game you only encounter them like twice. And it's only dangerous the first time, once you get your first gun you just head shot them without any risk. The Biophage enemies basically only come in a handful of forms, basic enemies, spitters, exploders, stealth crawlers, and the jumpscare tentacles. But for all of them except the tentacles + exploders, you beat them the same way. Melee Dodge > Melee Dodge > Melee Dodge > Melee Counterattack x1-3 > Shoot the highlight point > repeat. And that applies to the trivially easy bosses as well. It's just extremely boring and repetitive gameplay. It seems like they put way more focus on melee being part of the game, so they had to design most of the enemies to be bipedal things you can dodge attacks and melee counterattack. There's not the wide variety in enemies you see in Dead Space for example, since Dead Space focuses on ranged combat and keeping all of the enemies at arm's length. Because if anything in Dead Space gets into melee, you are in for a bad time. Slashers, Leapers, Infectors, Lurkers, Exploders, Pregnants, Dividers, Twitchers, Brutes, and all the different bosses. That's a huge list of different enemies with different strategies for dealing with compared to Callisto Protocol.

Its really only going to redefine or give rebirth to some sort of open world horror with constant action, given how the almost the whole ship is immediately accessible or can be accessed from the get-go, reducing linearity and also giving new experiences to backtracking due to the AI director. The original "Dead Space" of 2008 was not an impeccable product, by no means, there are enough stupidities in the plot, but somewhere they simply didn’t put the squeeze on it, there are enough technical omissions, there are enough hacks in the visual, not to mention the "piano from the bushes" in the form situations with an escape pod, one ordinary slasher in it and drank almost the entire crew of the Valor and an early rapid infection, a merged line with Nicole (in fact, only Hammond remembered her on board the Ishimura, and then he, after the 2nd chapter forgot about her, scored like the rest of the characters, Isaac in general ..). However, there are also factors in it that show a reverent attitude to work, a desire to do it with dignity and try to balance between realism and gameplay (a flamethrower that does not work in a vacuum is my respect, it seems to be not a significant detail and not the only one at the same time, among other advantages regarding game mechanics and not only them). And how great that they did not make this game with a first-person view. The game has an interesting lore and storytelling concept, even reading text diaries is interesting, the atmosphere is right there. This game is still interesting to disassemble, replay, read people's discussions on it, watch video reviews on the lore of the plot. It seems that you already know everything, but you learn or rethink something new to this day. And how many theories can be built on the basis of the available information. At the moment, not a single game (which has the tags "survival horror" and "science fiction" at the same time at the same time) has been able to repeat or come close to "Dead Space" in 2008 in terms of cult and suitability, which do not lose their relevance even now, at sunset in 2022.
