Like the bigger versions of this ant _(bull dogs),_ as a child we tormented them for the hell of it. In the process we discovered *they are smart.* They watch their antagonists and send scouts at a distance to get behind them. Then run/ jump at you from all directions. After we noticed this, we would always keep an eye behind us. From a "silly" Aussie, who now respects these little picnic spoilers.
@RafyPinaАй бұрын
Why did you torment bull dogs?
@martinrayner6466Ай бұрын
@@RafyPina We lived on a 350 acre cattle farm (Aberdeen Angus cattle), and as children we had way to much energy to burn, and little consideration towards consequences to ourselves. It was a challenge to us to try and see their queens... That meant pulling apart ant nests - without getting stung. You bet we got stung from time to time _(talk about hot pokers under your skin),_ but the challenge was still there. Crazy the dumb things children get up to. We three brothers, were primary school age. Yet we had enough sence not to tangle with the taipans, red belly blacks, browns, or tiger snakes. _PS; Bull dog _*_ants,_*_ of the genus Myrmecia, they are about 3 times bigger than the jumping jack ants._

@nathanielsutherland7502Ай бұрын
I've been stung a few times by Jack Jumpers, I found the initial pain to be slightly less than a honeybee and shorter lasting, but the itch in the aftermath was definitely worse. Jack Jumper stings don't come close to the ones I took from inch ants (the South Aussie common name for big black Mymercias, we don't typically call them bull ants here) from Kangaroo Island, the big jet black ones there can grow truly gigantic, I saw quite a few that were probably pushing 4cm long (just under 2inch) and when my hand got swarmed one time from grabbing a log I didn't realise had a nest living inside the hollow portion... That felt like a dozen red hot needles and short knife blades being twisted around all through the inside of my left hand. And I'm left handed.. I was working as a cook at a resort on the island at the time and those stings left me mostly unable to use my good hand at work for over a week due to the swelling, and the itching was something else entirely!

Glad you mention allergies, it`s a VERY important part of ranking stings and bites imo, as I have allergies myself and get extended swelling and redness, for example after a bee (or wasp, not sure, I didn`t actually see the little guy as it was resting on a doorhandle). Well after that, my pinky and 3 adjacent digits swole up, and I had redness and swelling almost up to my elbow, accompanied by slight dizzyness and arrhythmia and temporary loss of sensation in almost my entire hand. The pain was barely noticeable, probably because I though I was going to have a heart attack, sweating, dizzy et cetera.. This was in Norway btw, and our wildlife is NOT very potent.. Unless you meet an elk or something hehe, moose be moosin`..

They hurt, but they’re not that bad. Bullants are worse.
@davidcarr2649Ай бұрын
This really plays down the pain levels. I live in Northern NSW Australia, and I have been bitten several times in my 56 years by large Bull-ants. The pain levels from them are quite intense, and hurt more than a bee-sting. A few months ago, I was at a friend's property who told me about the juicy ripe mangos over on that tree. I wasn't warned to avoid the Jumping Jack ants nest nearby, as it's not directly on route to the mangos, but I often don't stick with the direct routes. I had no shoes on and walked straight through their nest that was hidden in leaf litter. Within seconds, several had climbed aboard the intruder's feet to attack. The specimens were almost twice the size of the one in this video, and I received 4 serious bites and a few close calls as I defensively went crazy, brushing them off while leap-jumping away in the most intense pain. If I had dropped to the ground I pain close to the nest, instead of a safe distance away, they would have overwhelmed me inno time, and this could easily have finished me. I would do almost anything to not be bitten again, so Jack has either got off lightly, or that wasn't a real Jumping Jack. I can take him to their nest, so he can stand on it for bravery/foolishness purposes. They aren't going anywhere.

The sting didn't hurt all that much. But ten minutes later I got that metallic taste in my mouth. THAT had happened once before and things got very nasty. Anyway this time a minute after that metallic taste the blood pressure started to fall. Within two minutes it had fallen to under 70/40. Gradually I recovered. An hour later I was back to normal.

And since moving to this location, I’ve been stung many time by the latter which have 4 active nests on my 2750 sq m block.I would like you to substantiate the ‘4 confirmed’ deaths but may be allergic reactions have been involved. I have never seen allergic reactions in any friends stung in 60 years. Anyway take care.

Extremely aggressive ant if you are anywhere near their nest they will attack. If you disturb the nest 100's will come swarming out in a frenzied attack. When walking through dense bush you have to carefully watch where you are going so you don't accidentally step on a nest or a snake. Bullants also, but most species of bullants aren't as aggressive as jumping jacks.
