What’s up everyone, it’s Friedemann Findeisen from Holistic Songwriting. Welcome to the Artists Series where we take a close look at some of the biggest rock artists in the world to see how they make us feel a certain way. I’m happy to say that today we’re looking at one of my favorite bands, the Deftones. And I must admit it was difficult writing this episode as there are so many songs I want to discuss, so many interesting things that this band does. But I’ve tried to reign myself in and make this a great episode regardless whether you’re a fan or not.

I’ve always been in awe with how against the grain they are with your standard song writing. So unorthodox and different. The emotional flow just reverberates through your soul. But try to explain that to a normal person.

I think Frank Delgado is probably the most underrated band member. It's understandable because his role is so sutble, but to me it's a big part of their sound. You've Seen the Butcher is the perfect example of his handiwork. ^_^

I fucking love the internet. I never thought anybody would give the time of day to deconstruct the Deftones work, but I'm glad you did as it really highlights some very interesting techniques. I do ponder whether the likes of Chino is consciously applying some music theory to his vocal melodies or whether it's just part of his subconscious style.

TLDR: Most songs arent hard to play but impossible to write like them This is why I love them. At first listen they seem a little simple(minimalistic) and in a way they are. If youve been playing guitar, bass, and/or drums for a bit like me and many people, their songs arent too hard to learn but if you tried to write a song with a similar structure itd be hard as hell. Also their combo of instrumental writing, vocals and rhythm make them complex but amazing.

This video really does a great job at showing the appeal of Deftones. Because it's how they do things differently than the typical mainstream rock band that made them stand out to me. And I've always felt that Chino had some of the most experimental melodies I have heard from a rock band.

And you know what the most mind blowing thing is? All the things that you broke down about the Deftones totally come instinctually to them. I bet Steph comes up with a riff, Abe writes a cool beat and Chino starts singing and to us it's this genius that we have to pick apart and analyze. To them it's just reflex. That's where I wanna be. Where style meets instinct.

David Alexander yeah... it’s true some people have more musical “talent” than other people but that doesn’t negate learning theory in one form or another. A band like that has applied at least some theory from the beginning. I’ve played in bands that just slapped together riffs without any knowledge of how they worked together. You can tell when theta happening. It can still be good but it has its own feel and sound.

You should have mentioned MINERVA, from the self-titled album. He confronts the major chord singing a minor third on the first verse and keep doing that through the whole song and that bothered me a lot until I got used to their freakyness.

Ivan Carmona A major chord contains a major third a minor third would be one note below that the two notes are super close making clash when played together.

And exactly how can you identify what chord is being played considering how distorted and full-on the overall sound is? Not to mention the constant counterpoint between Chino's voice (monophonic!), Chino's guitar (polyphonic!), Carpenter's guitar (polyphonic!), Delgado's arsenal of samples, synths, etc. (polyphonic!). I am all ears, can't wait... :)

The intro instrumentals and ethereal soundscape they created in “Hearts/Wires” is pure art. I can imagine myself staring out the balcony of a high rise building in the middle of a dystopian futuristic city like Cyberpunk/Blade Runner as the rain drops reflect the light off the neon signs on the buildings.

@@avedic it's more due to the fact NO ONE in the band was getting along with each other so a lot of the lyrics Chino wrote during that time where about them. I think that combined with Chi's death it just makes them all want to stay away from them

Also Chino said in an interview that it was a drug fueled time that led to dark places. That's another reason he plays in a few other bands/projects, partially for recovery.

I think thats something Korn also brings to the table. Their use of bass work as a percussive tool as well as when you start learning the guitar parts and realize how much every instrument plays off one another its crazy. Great chill series to watch here.

Loved the deftones since 98. Their White Pony album which defined their current sound was basically taken from the band Hum. The song "Little Dipper" by Hum, screams Deftones. Chino has mentioned this, so it's not new but it's crazy that a lot of Deftones fans don't know of Hum. Like others I've been a Deftones fan for many many years. As a fan of music I can entertain myself with certain new bands/songs currently out. With plenty of cringe in my blunder years, it awesome to know that my interest in them was real. Knowing I've probably outgrown most of my past interest, I can always count on what I felt and still feel about the Deftones. For the most part we all feel like we have an understanding of who we are. All these years later I'm suppose to feel like an adult but then the Deftones will randomly sneak their way into my ears again (like this suggested video) and I'm happily reminded of who I really am. I'm still that lost teenager but I now allow myself to feel and find happiness in the small things like headbanging and singing along. I'l like to think that the Deftones has something to do with my humble state of mind. They give me a feeling of sonder and if I can continue to keep others, even strangers in my thoughts, then teenager me would probably be proud. Except in the money department. Teenager me would kick my ass if I knew I would be this broke.

Amazing insights man! As a life long fan of the Deftones I can say this was illuminating and incredibly informative. Stef Carpenter was the reason I picked up a guitar for the first time and completely changed my outlook on how a riff could be presented as a stand alone piece or as a layer within a song. The harmonies on Radio/Video, Question, Nuguns, Violent Pornography, Soldier Side. Then they snake around each other's vocals on Lost in Hollywood, P.L.U.C.K., and Dreaming. The guitar riffs on Peephole, Vicinity of Obscenity, Soil, Needles, Thetawaves and the bouncy clean riff on Highway Song. There's just so much to talk about with that band.

Hey Friedemann, I've fallen in love with your series as a fellow musician! I was wondering if you would consider making an episode about Slipknot; Corey Taylor is the reason I started playing my first instrument and wanted to learn how music 'works.' Even though I am more of a jazz musician now, metal will always be my first love and one of my biggest influences. It would be interesting, for example, to see songs like Vendetta broken down; where the blues scale is employed for the vocal part in a metal song. Thanks for putting a lot of effort into these episodes!

I remember identifying the "half chorus" as a teaser of the whole chorus in Korn's two first albums. I'm positive that was Ross Robinson's direct influence on the structure of the tracks (I caught him doing the same with the infamous The Cure album he produced and At The Drive-In's as well). I'm afraid that became kind of a "cool" trend in the mid 90's, structure wise. Thank God Deftones kept defying expectations album after album, song structure- wise.
