here is a counter-argument: the show's first half was made for mystery lovers. I personally loved the first half better than the 2nd one, because it had a grounded mystery, which was well thought out, and honestly really well built up to the end (to be fair I was able to figure it out at the end of the 1st season, but not because it was so obvious, but because I used the show's clues to cross everyone off the list, until 1 person remained, and believe me I was reaaaaaally surprised that I was right). I get why u like the 2nd part more, because it had a more bs and fun plot, but to me the grounded nature of the first half with semy bs elements was more enjoyable, and I enjoyed the mystery of the prankster as well.

While I 100% respect your opinion, I’d have to disagree with how you said the earlier episodes of the series are basically the same detention breakout scenes. While most episodes do involve him breaking out of detention in the earlier half, each episode involves him doing something completely different. For instance, we have the few episodes where he goes around interrogating cliques (and each clique does offer something different in terms of personality) and then we have completely different episodes like the one where he is forced into the school play while he is supposed to be in detention for example, and we even have episodes where he is not in detention at all (for instance, the episode where the school goes on that chaotic field trip). Plus, each episode does offer a new clue to who did the prank while foreshadowing that there is something much bigger going on. I feel that Lee sneaking out of detention is similar to SpongeBob episodes that take place in the Krusty Krab - they are prevalent, but they need to be there because they are a huge baseline for the show, and while there are lots of episodes of that nature there, they all differ significantly. Also, that initial buildup just made the later episodes much more fun for me because it made me realize all the hints the series did provide that it was going to do something much bigger later on. As for the characters, I personally really connected with lots of them mainly because I watched the show during high school. I personally feel that they act the way that normal teenagers would - we get the more serious ones like Lee, the ones who are more laid back like Cam, the annoying jocks (my school was full of those sadly), the cheerleaders, the nerds, etc. And I feel that the show did a great job portraying these cliques. That, and we get to see why certain people act the way they do, and what they are thinking deep down (ex) Brandy is pretty rude because she is the new Glamazon and she is trying to fit in with the rest).
@sunnybloom72723 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. The slow burn and cliches on the surface are needed so they can be subverted. A big theme of the show is looking at people and things with a deeper perspective and that comes with time. Lee sees the world in the start as any high schooler would with high school priorities but it has to slowly shift so it gets deeper cause that’s how you get invested when these characters are in peril. Brandi and Jenny are my personal favourite examples of stellar character development and growth over a slow burn. Glad to know other people are looking at this show with a loving yet analytical lens
@bengi89072 жыл бұрын
@@sunnybloom7272 I like this series and occasionally go back and watch it. I agree with the opinion on the animation being stiff for background characters or running scenes, but the story and the characters kept me invested. I actually like the high school aspect as it is a good starting point just to get to know these characters before we-as wit Lee-begin to unravel the secrets with the school and the city. Upon rewatches I started to notice stuff in the background that would lead to later foreshadowing like with the original principal. Each episode adds layers within the series. I fully respect AniMatt and his opinion if he finds the pacing slow or the characters boring, I personally don’t mind it.

I hate how CN treated this show when they got the airing rights. In fact, it was mostly because of them that the show got canned. CN released the first two seasons on their streaming service out of order, which is especially bad for a mystery show, and many of the episodes were censored or removed, which is bad enough for most shows, but a complete DISASTER for a story-driven show. Unsurprisingly, this would lead to low U.S viewership. Whether you like the show or not, you gotta admit that's pretty shitty. I have to wonder where the story would have went if the show had lasted longer. Oh well, at least Sean Cullen's vocal cords can rest.

Animation style and the plot line twist not to mention the drama as well, my only complaint is with episode 53 here the way they ended it was, bittersweet but really a new problem arises and they leave it a cliffhanger drastically i really hope they finish off with that twist if ever does decide to come back. Speaking of shows with unresolved cliffhangers, as anybody ever heard of RollBots? It's a CGI Canadian animated series about round robots who that have 11 different tribes and live in a floating city called Flip City, the main hero Spin is the only one who wasn't from the tribes but found a place with the Kei'zatsu tribe as a police officer in order to protect Flip City from the forces of evil, especially from a spiderbot named Vertex. It's an underrated series that definitely deserves better. This show was planned to have around 4 or 5 seasons and the creator Michael Milligan (MCM) ended that show on a cliffhanger due to believing that a second season was a sure thing, but unfortunately, due to budget issues, the show got cancelled after one season and 26 episodes. If you guys are interested in checking it out, all of the episodes are on KZbin.

I wouldn't say the show is half the time bad, I just think the show isn't very appealing to some because of the high school aesthetic (which they represent very well imo), like, the secondary characters are just two dimensional jokes and over the top tropes, you might not like them but they are all just jokes, i don't see them as very relevant and contributing to the show overall, obviously there will be times they will contribute to the show but it's usually a minor thing, and considering we are viewing the show through lee's pov making them more interesting and recurring to the plot would take out our attention a lot from the main cast. The "it takes too long for the interesting part" thing i also disagree, i think the show has a really great pace, if one episode had too much information i think it would turn out a lot worse and kinda forced, having simple and little things, make each episode stand out a bit, and while the second plot line is sometimes tiring, i think is great for some character development, and most of the time its pretty chill. I respect your opinion (also i loved that barrage impression), but for a Canadian cartoon with probably a small budget, it's very entertaining and well done, you can see the writers and producers cared to make an interesting and smart story.
