Honestly the Justice League cartoon version is my favorite because he didn't just happen to lose his hand in a fight or some accident, he cut it off himself to save his son and himself. Now I don't know about you but that level of sacrifice is pretty darn heroic to me.

Could you imagine what that would have done to that poor car? Lol the car would probably have gotten reforged into the harpoon anyway. That way it can run people over from beyond the grave.

I think the Justice League story is the best take on Aquaman loosing his had. It's a great example of sacrifice from both the perspective of a hero and father.

Personally, I liked how the hand issue went down in the Justice League cartoon. To me it seemed to have a better purpose to it - protecting an innocent. The symbol of being of both worlds thing is interesting too, but got out of hand.

The cartoon origin is my favorite, it shows alot of what make's aquaman a great character, I'm not sure what the case is in the comics but aquaman in the cartoons (Justice league and brave and the bold) Aquaman is extremely dedicated to doing the right thing for the right things sake, he doesn't care about what others might think of because he's too busy saving his people, his friends, and his world. Others might try to find a way to avoid losing a limb at all cost, but Aquaman looks at this situation and realizes what must be done, and then does it. And in the BatB cartoon he might be alot goofier, but he takes joy in saving the world, and will often give motivational speeches to pump up his allies. Its alot diffferent from other heros who seem to have an overall goal outside of heroics, aquaman seems to be a hero because he feels it's his duty to be one.

I really enjoyed the story-line with lady of the lake and the whole "water-bearer" thing. It was at the time when Aquaman was disposed from Atlantis and having him become the vessel to another forgotten kingdom like Camelot was a pretty neat idea. And they essentially gave his hand the same moral stipulations as Excalibur!

DId you notice every hero has a monster counterpart? Like, Superman has become a ghost in the Phantom Zone, batman has been turned into a vampire, Green Lantern almost turned into a black lantern zombie and the flash was once transformed of course, into a man-gorila by Grodd. Martian Manhunter is a shapeshifting alien with mental powers, so maybe that counts.

Hi Scott! I love your channel. I've watched every single episode of Comic Misconceptions and I'm currently working my way through the podcast. You guys are great! I don't know that many people who are anywhere close to as nerdy as I am, and being able to "hang out" with other people like me is fantastic. Keep up the good work! Bye the way, I have an idea for a video. (hard segway (now you really know I listen to you guys a lot :) )) The other day I looked up what state Metropolis is supposedly in. The answer is New Jersey, right next to where Gotham is supposed to be. But apparently both cities where originally meant to represent New York City, with Metropolis representing the "good" parts of the city and Gotham representing the "bad" parts. And I was thinking, since Daredevil works in the "bad" areas of New York, does that mean that Batman and Daredevil work in the same place? Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to read this excessively long comment. God bless you all!

Aquaman's powers are telepathic, so he's not really speaking at all. If he does command verbally, it's just for show and not really necessary. The fish don't understand his spoken words. He just taps into their minds, suggests and idea, and they respect it. No verbal language involved. And it's not even Professor X stuff where it's just like a spoken conversation, just in people's minds. There's no actual language involved. Fish don't hear commands in english in their minds and suddenly develop an understanding of the english language. It's something else entirely. Just raw, unfiltered commands.

Aquaman's always been one of my favorite DC characters since I was a kid. Never really got the hate. Personally liked the initial harpoon hand and the retractable version best. Would have been boss if he'd gotten a trident variant at some point, since that's his go-to weapon otherwise. Also, just a personal preference, but he should always rock a beard.

Recreating water with CGI has been essentially perfected by now. In fact, they even had to tone down the realism in Finding Nemo (made in 2003) because it looked too real compared to the cartoon aesthetic of the rest of the movie. It would be a straight-up miracle if DC manages to screw it up.

Even though I'm primarily a DC fan Aquaman is probably the DC character I was least familiar with ( I could have sworn he talked to fish ! ) I knew he'd lost a hand but didn't know how, I even knew about the water hand but didn't know how he got it. Great episode -- Like ! Maybe do an episode on comics characters who have lost limbs ! Besides Aquaman you've got Rick from "The Walking Dead" and Luke Skywalker in "The Empire Strikes Back" ... there are probably more. Captain Lefty ? The Amazing Peg ?

Well, Aquaman would be able to injure himself with his immense strength countering his massive durability. So Justice League Animated’s story makes the most sense.

I like him with both hands but I always thought that hand that the Lady of the Lake gave him was a cool story and really creative. I always thought that the "A" shaped belt buckle was his symbol more than anything and I feel that nowadays his trident has become more of a symbol for him than the harpoon.

+JTierney119 Which is silly even beyond the obvious; Cthulhu is NOT, as advertised, a water creature. If you check out the stories about him, his home is an underwater city because it's basically atlantis (that is, it was built on the surface, but then fell in). This is good for everyone else because Cthulhu's powers are restricted by water; the fact that R'lyeh is at the bottom of the ocean stops him from using his psychic powers to control people on the surface. He doesn't WANT to be in the ocean, he's STUCK down there. So if what Aquaman is saying is true, and he commands ocean life and they respect his orders because he's the king atlantean, then that means Cthulhu would both not be under his influence, and even if he was given orders he isn't Aquaman's subject (being from his own 'royal' line.)

Doubt it. if DC is staying true to the Cthulu mythos. Cthulu doesn't orignate from earth. but from the void of space. so does not fall under Aquaman's command.

Hey Scott Id love to see you do a video on Hype and how that relates to comics We have so many "Big Events" in comics theses days with the new civil war, convergence etc, Comic companies are trying to hype us up to buy more comics to get more excited about issues and the story lines. but its happening so much that they are all starting to feel rather Bland & "BLAH" hardcore fans are saying they are going to skip events entirely and what that could mean for the future of comics as sales are still going down. possibly brining up the hype of star Wars TFA how Star wars is the biggest and highest Growcing franchise of all time when you consider all the movies plus books video games,Mech, add Encodement and of course toys. and even know the prequels went all that well received. they all still made a lot money. since the 70s toy sales really haven't gone down even know were have only been getting movies every 10 years.. TFA has been the previous record of pre ticket sales buy x10. this has never Happend before in history and also that the prequels went so perhaps it isn't about quality as much as it is the build up to the event.. I hope this makes sense i'm typing as i'm thinking here haha Anyways Id love to hear your thoughts ;) TFG

Y'know, I've wanted to tackle a topic like this. I'm one of those people who skip event comics a lot because usually only one in every three or four is actually worth reading. I feel like events stop feeling like events when the happen so often. I'd like them to go a few years of just telling regular stories, and then introduce a BIG event.

Yeah I totally agree. They just do them to sell comics. and Half the time they wont even comic to the repercussions of the event. out of fear of loosing more sales.

I have a question, maybe a good one for your new response videos. I was not into comics as a kid. Now I find myself being a big fan of many comic super heros. But my only experience with them is the movies, podcasts, and channels like yours. I really want to get into comics but, there are so many time lines, and universes, and confusing things. How do I enter this world with any idea about what is going on? Where the hell to I start?

In JLA : New World Order (issues 1-4 1997) Aquaman has a great line fighting Zum who says "You must be Aquaman. What can you do? You can't fly or run fast, can you? Your skin may be tough but not so tough I can't just... cut through. What can you do, apart from talk to Fish?" Aquaman replies "Let me think. I can locate your brain's Basal Ganglia, the part inherited from your marine ancestors... And just for starers, I give you a seizure." Zum spends the rest of fight convulsing on ground. My all time favorite use Of Aquamans Powers. That said at any given point in DC's long publication history most character powers change to fit a writers needs. Aquaman is no exception at all .

Would be awsome to have Black Manta in a second movie teasing to cut Aquaman´s hand off but not succeeding, and having him loosing it anyway like he did in the JL animated series. When I discovered this version of Aquaman in the 90´s as a kid I started to like Aquaman so that´s my favorite version. Loved to see Jason Momoa impersonating it in the movies.

Yes! An Aquaman video! I completely agree that he is indeed one of the most underappreciated comic characters. But if more people read the comics in particular the New 52 run, I believe people would change their minds about him. And even though overall I prefer Aquaman with two hands he does look pretty awesome with that harpoon hand. As far as if he looses his hand in the current run of Aquaman comics or even the future film, I would prefer that he looses it in the same vein as the Justice League cartoon show in a heroic way. Because getting his hand eaten by piranhas is kind of lame.

The mystic water hand was the best idea to me. It symbolizes his connection to water & it gives him other abilities aside from enhanced physical prowess (which let's face is seems to be the JL normal of super-strength, stamina, and great durability). And unlike that absurd harpoon hand, it functions just like his normal hand, but still has its own unique look.

in the superfriends cartoon, Aquaman would use telepathy to command sea life. They portrayed in with circle effects emanating from his head accompanied by a sound effect. (He did sometimes talk DURING this process, but that seemed to more of a case of him talking to himself, just like the rest of the Superfriends, as a way for the audience to understand what he was doing.)

Hey Scott, I was wondering if you could do a Comic Misconceptions on Big Hero 6 more specifically about why even though Disney despite own Marvel, Disney classifies the characters in the movie as being Disney Originals (in all products relating to the movie), even though it was originally a Marvel comic book series (they even teamed up with both the X-Men and Spider-man in the comics). Think about it, when the movie was being promoted Marvel didn't reprint any of their comics nor were they reintroduced back into the mainstream 616 universe. The reason I ask this is because I had a conversation about this with my friend at collage and neither of us could come up with a hypnotically realistic reason. So I'm asking if you can please shed some light on this for us. If your reading this, Please respond if you are able to . Signed, A curious subscriber
