My great great grandparents arrived from Syria to northern Argentina in the early 1900's and built tobacco farms forming a little Syrian community over there, by 1960 the farms stopped being productive and they settled in Greater Buenos Aires, which was open countryside at the time, simultaneously with a large group of Italian immigrants. I was born in the 90's and today the neighborhood is a really charming and diverse place with people from everywhere, from Europe to the Middle East to China and even Brazil and other Latin American countries.

Brazil is the main Arab colony outside the Arab world. It is estimated that the direct descendants are between 15 and 20 million people. However, I believe it is much larger, many Brazilians are of Iberian descent from the Algarve, Spain and other southern regions of Portugal, areas in the past inhabited by Portuguese/Spanish with Arab and Moorish ancestry, so it is very difficult to calculate the Arab heritage in Brazil, aside from the fact that this is not much commented upon, few people know about this information.
@JonasPrudas Жыл бұрын
The first Portuguese who arrived in Brazil were from the south of Portugal. However the largest migrations of Portuguese to Brazil occurred in the 19th century and start of the 20th century from the very north of Portugal, namelly from the regions of Minho and Trás os Montes. The cavaco, that little guitar used in samba music, is the Portuguese cavaquinho used in northern Portuguese folklore. This instrument is also the origin of the Hawaiian ukulele.

Hi there, this video was SPOT ON! I live in the megacity of São Paulo, Brazil. In São Paulo City alone there are over a million people of recent arab descent from recent migrations, mostly christians, but if everyone got their DNA tested the percentages would have been much greater. Take me as an example. My family came from Portugal and Italy mainly, although I am Brazilian, I got 12% of my DNA from the Middle-east and North Africa.....this video is spot on. Being 6% from the middle east, 4% of North Africa and 2% Jewish (obviously that this came from my Portuguese and Italian ancestors, etc. No one in my family is Lebanese for example.). One thing that has surprised me was that I got 52% of my genes from IBERIA, much higher than I had anticipated (not to mention the other Euro areas). 52% is twice the average of the Portuguese populous today so I got a lot more Native Portuguese in me than most Portuguese today. I love Portugal so I was happy about that. Going back to the middle eastern influence in Brazil... aside from Lebanon and Syria I have friends that have ancestors from Egypt, Iraq, Turkey and Palestine and there are a lot of jewish people here from Syria and Lebanon as well. MASAMAN you need to study about our emperors! You will only understand our immigration patterns in Brazil if you study about our Monarchy. Dom Pedro I married an Austrian Princess and had a son, D. Pedro II. He was an incredible guy and his history is incredibly sad and grandious at the same time. He believed that Brazil, needed to have a class of people that came from a strong tradition in trading in remote areas in order to further develop the Brazilian economy, which was mainly agricultural. According to his perception, no one could top various peoples from the ottoman empire. He believed that these people were "natural" traders, and that they would change the culture of Brazil, very based on slavery. That's why he fomented the immigration of arabs and jews to Brazil, so that we could develop our business sector here since most Portuguese, Spaniards and Italians were farmers. He's also fomented immigration from his mum's empire, AUSTRO-Hungary, in order to break the cycle of the slave trade. People need to understand that we had one of the world's FIRST PARLIAMENTARIAN MONARCHIES here. The emperors were ABOLITIONISTS, but the congress was pro-slavery for they were oligarchs. The emperor found in immigration a way to change the culture of Brazil thus ending slavery progressively, not only through politics, but through culture and via a more diverse economy. When he finally ended it, he was thrown out of the country and died poor in a cheap hotel in Paris. He was the greatest man Brazil has ever seen. His daughter, Princess Isabel was freedom activist. After she abolished slavery, she took refuge in France ( she was married to a French man). There, she's saved a lot of people that became refugees in WWI. She was known for sheltering refugees in her house in France. The history of the Brazilian Monarchy is incredible. The republic is the worst thing that has ever happened to this country. Dom Pedro the Second was one of the biggest contributors (financially) of 2 notable people, Graham Bell and Thomas Edison. No wonder, Rio had public electricity on the same day NYC did, and was the world's third city to have a phone thanks to Dom Pedro the II, an intellectual who was fluent in 17 languages including 2 native languages, Tupi and Guarani! He was IT!

My great grandfather's family (from my mother's side of the family tree) arrive to Argentina coming from the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon and he had the first sport shop in the city of Mar del Plata. Saliba was his surname, from the arab word "salib", meaning "cross", signalling they were a catholic maronite clan. Some years ago we made contact with the part of the family that stayed over there and keep living in the same town.

My Colombian wife’s uncle, a Catholic priest, researched the family history, and he found out that one branch came from Turkey, so for awhile the family believed they were part Turkish. That was until a history teacher friend of mine, who was from Latin America too, explained that my wife was more than likely part Arab. Just how it’s explained here, he told us that since the Middle East was under the Ottoman Empire, all Arabs traveled with a Turkish passport, so it was always noted upon entering any Latin American country that they were coming from Turkey.

Kokainuser Europe is not one country. Different European countries have different languages, different cultures, different discourses and different history. Muslims are part of some European countries since centuries, but not all European countries. If you were a Muslim and for some strange reason decided to settle down here in Sweden 200 years ago, you would have to convert to the Lutheran state religion of Sweden, or you would face legal consequences. Things have really changed here since then.

The Arabic influence in Colombia is very strong, here we have the second largest mosque in Latin America, and in the department of Guajira, dialects of Arabic are spoken, and the city of Maicao, is almost 100% Arabic. In Barranquilla the music has many Arabic influences, and in cities like Cali, which is in the department of Valle del Cauca, people eat a lot of kibbes, which is a typical Lebanese dish, but it was assimilated and became something typical in the city of Cali, Colombia has had 3 presidents of Arabic descent, as well as many famous people at a national level are of Arabic descent. And at a national level, in Colombia is very popular the Hummus/Tahini and the Arabian bread, besides that we love to put Arabian songs in the parties.

Brazil, like the USA, has lots of experience absorbing immigrans\ts and is pretty good at it. Europe, not so much. French policies like not letting them wear Islamic symbols or garbs at school will just serve to keep them out of school and lead to them not assimilating into the dominant culture as quickly. Dominican Republic has a population that is indeed motly mixed at 72% (or 7,560,000) which is higher than the amount of mixed people in Cuba (27% or 3,034,530 based on data provided by the Cuban dictatorship) and Puerto Rico (24% or 818,640 people) HOWEVER, there are white people in DR, specially in the Cibao (North) Region. Dominican Republic is home to a white Caribbean population that at just 16% (1,712,000) is almost the same size as Puerto Rico's alleged 70% (2,359,363) but still less than the self proclaimed Cuban white population at 63% (7,160,399). Not only this, but the fact that you are so ignorant as to say that no European power wanted us, just shows your lack of education. Spain and France killed each other for almost 400 years over dominion of the whole Hispaniola island and later on, Dominican Republic on early 1800's. Great Britain tried many times to take over but was simply unable to giving the fact that they were bussy conquering and defending their lands in the USA and Canada. Talking about the devil, the USA tried on two occasions to make this their neo-colony as they did with Cuba and Puerto Rico, but were just unable to. Even Kings from the Magreb Region wanted to buy Samana and Saona Island but were rejected by Dominican authorities. What is Dominican Republic nowadays? Well it is the most biodiverse country in the Caribbean, the 4th most turistic nation of Latin America, the 9th (soon to be 8th) largest economy south of the USA and biggest one of the Caribbean, holds the biggest, most populous and developed city in the Caribbean (Santo Domingo), it is home of the only thriving Chinatown in the Caribbean Region (with a population of around 500,000 Asians), it is the country with the most diverse economy in the Caribbean, one of the only six countries in the WORLD to have trade agreements with both the USA and the EU, it is the fastest growing economy of ALL Latin America, #1 producer of quality cigars and rum in the World and it is the birth nation of renowned world figures in every aspect of the human intellect. I love that you’re educating people on how diverse Latinos are. I’m Chilean of Italian descent, my husband has Croat and Lebanese roots, and many of my friends have immigrant roots too; Palestinian, Italian, German, etc. I’ve been to the US several times and I always laugh at how ignorant some people are, thinking that all Latinos are only from Spanish and Native descent 😆 of course all of us have Spanish and Native (in our case, Inca or Mapuche) genes, but we are also a melting pot of maaany different nations that came here looking for a better life. Nowadays in Chile we’re experimenting a big wave of Caribbean immigration (mostly Colombians, Venezuelans and Haitians), which makes me happy because it will further diversify the country :)

The sirio-lebanese people in Brazil are generally rich, and have a great political power. Our president, Michel Temer, has lebanese roots

I'm from Barranquilla, Colombia!! Although I don't have any Arabic descents,but I have a lot of friends with Arabic descents, also the Arabic community is mostly the richer community in Barranquilla, example of Arabs here: Shakira (half Lebanese)

Pretty simple. Arabs were much more moderate in the past and excelent in doing business. They started as street vendors like the one from the tale of Aladdin and sooner rather than later they started to open their own shops and established families here and there. They are still somewhat a bit secluded and prejudice of society in general but who isn't really.
