It might be worth mentioning the Gold and diamond discovery in the XVII in the Mines region, since it truly shaped the country we see today: made Rio relevant as the export city, attracted about 40% of portugal's population to move into Brazil, founding cities such as Vila Rica, Diamantina, etc and shifted the economic power to the southeast. At the same time, it financially supported the Portuguese crown in rebuilding the country and its efforts to centralize power as Rio became the center of the maritime empire.

I liked the animations, but you skimmed through major events that cannot be overlooked. In 1815, the capital of the Kingdom of Portugal was effectively moved to Rio de Janeiro, and, as such, when the King decided to return to Lisbon, it was perceived by the local elites as a demotion. Hence why they supported the independence movement and the subsequent war (1822-1823). Pedro IV's (later Pedro I) wife was the daughter of the powerful Emperor Francis I of Austria, and she had ambitions of becoming an Empress of her own. He left the country because his father had died and he believed he had a legitimate claim to be both King of Portugal and Emperor of Brazil (and eventually reuniting both countries). Only after 10 years of his absence, the Brazilian crown decided it'd been too long and seated his son, Pedro II, as the new Emperor (at 14 years old, not 5 as stated). Then you jumped all the way to 1889 without mentioning the most important war in South America - the Paraguayan War, that solidified the national identity - and the liberal reforms to slavery (1850 - ban on Transatlantic slave trade; 1871 - the Free Womb Act; 1884 - provinces were allowed to ban slavery on their own). You also did not mention that both the 1871 Free Womb Act and the 1888 Golden Law (that effectively banned slavery country-wide) were signed by Pedro II's daughter, Isabel, who was widely disliked throughout the country. The 1889 coup was a direct response to her actions, as she was the heir to the throne. If conciseness was of concern, there was no point in citing anything afterwards: there was no concern of its independence henceforth. By 1930 (next point in your timeline), Brazil had already fought in WWI and become a founding member of the League of Nations. If you're going to talk about coups in Brazil, you'll need another video since it happens every 20 years or so.

@lumzes7435 Beautiful country, but Brazil did not exist before 1500 colonization defined Brazil Brazil was founded and built by the Portuguese under Portuguese administration from 1500 to 1822 With their current enormous dimensions, the Portuguese, the mixed-race people who became Brazilians, and others who arrived later, inherited from the Portuguese hand in hand this territory that corresponds to the largest former colony in the world
@jeanhenriquedemacedoviana76818 ай бұрын
@@marie3587 we can hardly say there was a Brazil even after the independence, least of all in colonial times. We had four independence movements, none of them thought what exists today as the political entity to be. There are two huge mistakes. First, King Dom João VI didn't declare Brazil an "empire of its own" in 1815. He declared that Brazil was no longer a posession of Portugal but rather an integral part of its territory, as the "United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves". Even though the royal family was already in Rio since 1808, and colonial restrictions in commerce had already been lifted at the ocasion (to attend British interests), he only took that step in 1815 because of the Congress of Vienna, since it was required that all of those in power should be located inside their own countries and not anywhere else, so he solved the issue by saying "hey, Brazil is not a colony anymore, I'm working from the metropolis". He only came back to Portugal in 1821 due to the Liberal Revolution of Porto. While the Portuguese wanted to be a constitutional monarchy, they wanted to recolonize Brazil in order to benefit from the colonial pact and save their economy that was in ruins since the opening of the harbours in 1808. Brazilians would never accept that and this ended up in our independence the following year. Second mistake, you showed the capital located in Rio until the end of the video, while it was actually moved to Brasília in 1960.

The video is a year old, and no one will pay attention to this comment. But there is a mistake in the story right at the beginning. And I don't see anyone correcting it. Brazil was not a country when it abolished slavery, it was an empire. There is a difference between the two.

@leoni76492 жыл бұрын
More weird is the fact that the monarchy was better government than the republic in case of Brazil. The emperor cared about the country and the people, while the republicans were (and still are at some level) basically puppets of the farm/land owners. The reason the monarchy fell was because the monarchy abolished slave (yes, with pressure from the British) going completely against the will of the farm owners (rich)

Therefore, Portuguese navigators reached the land that today corresponds to Brazil before the date that is affirmed by many - 1500, as well as Portuguese navigators had already reached the Caribbean before the Spaniards. Regarding the Treaty of Tordesilhas, the Portuguese king, D. João II, requested that the dividing line be advanced a few more miles, which demonstrates that there was already knowledge of the Brazilian lands. Regarding the contact with the natives of that region, the Portuguese had as their primary objective their evangelization, this objective was maintained with the remaining Portuguese explorations around the globe. A fact that was reported by the Portuguese explorers was their admiration for the attitudes of the natives who, as almost everyone knows, admired everyday objects, such as mirrors and everyday utensils, but the natives offered their children as a bargaining chip. showing contempt for them, something that shocked the Portuguese. The light of truth was brought to them by the missionaries, and over the years the attitudes and ways in which the natives thought changed in the light of the Faith. Proof of how rich the colony of Brazil was is seen in the fact that the largest number of slaves came to Brazil, since slaves were very expensive. But it is necessary to clarify that slavery in Brazil was the least worst done in the Americas. The study of an American named Frank Tannenbaum, who studied the Atlantic slave trade in detail, made it clear that there was a great difference between slavery carried out by the Portuguese and the other nations that colonized the Americas. This American claimed that the people who treated slaves the worst on the American continent were the Dutch (calvinists). The Caribbean was the worst place to be enslaved. Then Frank states that after the Dutch, those who treated their slaves worse were the English (anglicans), the French (Catholics), the Spaniards (Catholics) and finally the Portuguese (Catholics). This scholar also asserted that, while in the US slaves and former slaves had no rights, in colonies with a Catholic environment slaves had a large number of rights and norms to protect them.

Pedro I didn't really have "other ideas" And the King John VI was actually forced to return to Portugal. The whole Portuguese Empire was being run from Brazil since 1808 with Rio as the effective capital over the European metropolis, specially after Brazil became United Kingdom with Portugal. The Portuguese bourgeoisie didn't like the situation as they had lost many trade privileges and also the French Revolution meant they wanted either a Republic or a constitutional monarchy. John VI was forced to return or lose the crown, but he had to sign a Constitution that made him basically powerless. So it was basically the Portuguese Assembly and Burgeoise that were trying to make Brazil a colony again. But most Spanish colonies had revolted or were revolting and becoming independent. Plus the USA some decades before. Portugal and specially the King knew that making Brazil a colony again would spark an independence revolt backed by the US and other countries just independent from Spain. The King actually ADVISED Pedro I to take the reigns and put the crown in his head before some adventurer did so (figure of speech, he actually meant someone becoming president) So Pedro I declared Brazil's independence, but kept the country under the house of Bragança. So much that Pedro I daughter became Queen of Portugal while his son became the second Emperor of Brasil

@alessandroschimilovskibati86752 жыл бұрын
It was much easier for Portuguese settlers to reach the interior from the east than Spaniards from the west, because there were no major natural obstacles like the Andes mountain range, the Amazon river basin also facilitated Portuguese colonization much more than Spanish in the Amazon region. Therefore, the expansion of the colony was done basically because the Portuguese colonists occupied the lands and the Spaniards did not, this was formalized by other treaties that replaced the Treaty of Tordesillas. After independence, Brazil still grew about 200,000 square kilometers through victories in wars and excellent negotiations in border fixing treaties with its neighbors.
@alessandroschimilovskibati86752 жыл бұрын
Ah, I forgot to mention that the moment when the Portuguese began to cross the line of the treaty of tordesillas with more boldness was in the period of the Iberian Union (1580 - 1640), when Portugal and Spain were united in one country, and therefore the limits of the treaty of tordesillas no longer mattered. When the two countries separated, the Portuguese were already occupying land on the other side of the line.

Portugal employed people born in the colonies with an indigenous background and know-how about traveling through the forests called Bandeirantes. These Bandeirantes traveled through much of the continent’s interior leaving markers signaling that they were there first before any other European state. Once it came time to renegotiate the colonial border between Portugal and Spain, both sides agreed to a policy of whichever side explored an area first would be given the land. That tripled Portugal’s share of South America and this precedent would be used by the independent Brazil to further expand inland.
@lucasteodoro122 жыл бұрын
they would do that slowly, mile after mile, the spanish weren't interested in Brazil, because they found gold and sliver in almost all of their colonies, while it took some time for the portuguese to find gold in Brazil ( late 17th, early 18th)
