An Airborne Combat Company in the newly minted 1st Cavalry Division is sent to Vietnam. How did they get there, what did they think?

Thank you so much for your sacrifice.. I was still in high school I had and have great empathy for what your young eyes saw. It was a place so different than what you all were used to..even smells and air you breathed... God bless you...remember He is greater than all...big hugs to you.

Can’t imagine going over to the nam in a ship. I got to fly. Love this old guys attitude 👍👍👍

Me either, I flew over in 69 and we were supposed to land in Saigon. When approaching the pilot came on and advised us that we were being shot at and would divert to another airport, Long Bihn I think, my memory is shot. I do remember thinking that I’m not even on the ground yet and already being shot at.

Reality is a shocker. My cousin was in that group from Ft. Benning. He had 4 months of active duty left when he arrived. His company lost 1/3 of the men in that 4 months. A lot of bad leadership and stupid stuff from the top brass in the States. Especially from the CIA.

This is really cool all units should've had their own cinematography crew
@thatguy224412 жыл бұрын
Anymore, most do. At least they did when I was in Iraq; no reason to think that's changed. One of those photos in the video my unit made was a rather interesting juxtaposition: A fully armed and armored soldier with his rifle (of course), body armor and a large knife, loaded out to destroy the insurgency by himself was very, very gently petting the dog who was our company mascot. We brought the dog back to the States, which was really cool.

Apparently their beach landing wasn’t the same as Iwo Jima . The Vietnamese always knew where we were going before we did.
@sanhhuscroft63058 ай бұрын
Of course NOT. During the Vietnam War beach landing meaning that our US Soldiers arrived at their assigned bases before they are being reassigned to the war/Combat zones. I was a very young age Vietnamese female working for the US Army Combat and Combat support battalions located on the beach of Qui Nhơn, Bình Định Province. They were not beach landing for an invasion . Yes, true the việt cộng and the communist always knew about where our troops being send to from the post , etc…..it was politically stupid !!

Why doesn't this have more hits. What has you tube been doing with this. 7th cav division. They lost there flags and war ribbons in the battle of the little bighorn. They brought them back at laDrang battle.
@thomaskjos44602 жыл бұрын
Total BS. No such thing as a 7th Division. No loss of "there" (ha, ha) flags and war ribbons" No "brought anything back" at Ia Drang. Great to be able to just make stuff up, isn't it?

If North Vietnam didn't enjoy the safety of knowledge that land forces wouldn't ever be approved to take the war to the leadership and political cadre? Like fighting Fascism without attacking Italy, Germany and axis powers. The commitment, patriotism and professionalism of the troops? Expended on a mission that was strategically fanciful, cynical and profit generated. North Vietnam was born as a perfect totalitarian regime. South Vietnam? Was expected to acheive a functional democracy whilst their Northern neighbours actively stiffled the creation of civil infrastructure, institutions and political environment. South Vietnam born 1954, died 1975.. 20 years of Communist rape, terrorism and murder. Could've South Vietnam become a similar nation as South Korea? What changed in the period of time between the armistice in Korea and the fall of Saigon? Talking Heads, media, educational institutions and the DNC all in unison for a Roman Spectacle.. soldiers dyimg, Vietnamese civilians being collateral damage and The Northern Communist regime enjoying immunity of direct action. Walter Kronkite? A vacuous, infomercial for style over substance.

Thanks Jess. True, we did not attempt to win the war, and squandered the lives of good young men playing politics.
