Doom is basically synonymous with it’s main protagonist at this point. It’s hard to think of one without thinking about the other. As the games have changed, so has he. Originally called the Doom Marine, and was supposedly just intended to be a representation of the player according to some of the original developers, the character became iconic as his own thing anyway and was eventually dubbed as Doomguy by the Doom community and it stuck. As easily as the Doom Marine turned into Doomguy, he has now become the Doom Slayer. While this is easily his coolest name yet, it has added to some of the odd bumps in continuity for the series. As Id Software continued to push out Doom games over the years with different styles and motifs, the true nature and origin of the Doomguy has become ambiguous to say the least.
One thing that has remained fairly consistent throughout the Doom universe though, is that the Doomguy is absurdly powerful. Whether we’re talking about his ability to take multiple hits from hell’s most vile creatures and survive, or his ability to just punch them dead, Doomguy certainly has something going for him that normal humans seem to not. Why is this? How did he become such a powerful force of death and destruction?
