Having lived in Dubai for several years and having been in a relationship with a white girl, I've seen both sides of the equation. I am Indian by the way. Your salary in Dubai is almost always tied to your nationality/race. Unless you are in a company that prides itself in being an equal opportunities style of employer, you will definitely get paid lesser than colleagues from more developed countries. But this distinction doesn't just apply to brown vs. white or black vs. arab, etc. My girlfriend (Spanish) was at a director level position of a small startup. One of her subordinates was British. Subordinate was paid more than the director. It happens in Dubai. Salary segregation in Dubai leads to racial segregation for the most part. Different people can afford to do different things. I'm not sure if these rough tier's apply for general salaries in Dubai but here's where you stand in the 'nationality pay scale': 1. British/American 2. Arab from Saudi/Oman/UAE/etc. 3. Other Western Europeans (Germany/Portugal/France/etc.) 4. Lebanese 5. Malaysian/Thai/Other more developed Asian countries (Taiwan for example..) 6. Filipino/Indian 7. Pakistani/Bangladeshi/Syrian (country with any level of turmoil/desperation) 8. African countries I might have messed up some of the tier's above but this is pretty much how it works. Uncontrolled, unregulated capitalism. The basic rule in this entirely racist scheme appears to be that you can expect to be paid about twice of what you may earn in your own country. Hence, the economic development of where you come from greatly affects the final salary you may be able to negotiate. Of course, as most Indians in Dubai are blue collar workers (they get treated very badly, by the way), you will pretty much be regarded as 'poor'. Even if you aren't. It's just a very prevalent stereotype in the arab world. White = Rich. Brown = Poor. There are plenty of broad minded people in Dubai, no doubt about that at all. You'll be able to find friends who don't wear their race on their sleeves. You'll meet several people who will also look at you weird if you're brown and in a 'posh' place. You may also be denied entrance into some clubs, etc. Dubai is racism at it's finest. There is no hidden racism in Dubai. Maybe that could be seen as a small positive. It's all blatant in your face, you suck because of your skin color kind of racism. But you're asking about how it's like. If you can get past all the blatant racism, you'll earn a higher salary than India and may lead a good lifestyle. I would've definitely counted myself as upper middle class in Dubai but I would not go back there for a million dollars. There were times where me and my girlfriend went out for dinner and the staff were all "Hello Ma'am, how are you today Ma'am ?" and I'd joke with her "What about Sir ?". Once at this restaurant called Fuddruckers where you order burgers and once they arrive you can go and fill up some toppings at a 'toppings bar' the lady came up and said "Ma'am you can now go and get some toppings". We were there, 5 Indian guys, and 1 white girl. I looked at my girlfriend and said "Baby, I guess you should pick up some toppings for us too". We all laughed and went to get toppings, but this is pretty much commonplace. There were times we even got sick of this kind of behavior. Once in Caribou Coffee I was there with my girlfriend and two other white ladies. I was standing right across the cash counter, waiting to order for everyone when the lady at the counter looked to my left (where the white people were sparkling in the sunlight, excuse my sarcasm) and said "Good afternoon Ma'am, what would you like to have ?"). My girlfriend got so annoyed she said "And good afternoon Sir, no ?". That shut her up. Some people like to downplay racism in Dubai but having been with someone of a different race, I got to see it in a very blatant but technical A/B testing sort of way. I've traveled and lived in about 40 countries. I've never been to a country more openly racist than the UAE so far. (I haven't lived in any other arab countries though..) I have to add though that racial violence isn't a part of the equation at all. I never felt unsafe (well, brown people outnumber everyone else in Dubai..), or even, threatened in any way. For an Indian, you'll just have constant not-so-subtle 'reminders' that you are 'inferior'. If you can deal with that (and the millions of Indians in Dubai certainly seem to be able to deal with it..) then Dubai will be fine for you.

Wow, we can learn a lot from Dubai's incredible success! I'm from the Republic of Zambia, in Southern Africa. We hold the second largest copper mine in the world, yet are the 10th or so poorest country on Earth. Natural resources will only take you so far. Sustainable economics requires a more innovative, open mindset, and the UAE is a shining demonstration of this reality. In college, my roommate, a close friend, and I once had a debate about what policies were holding the country back economically, and I remember him (my roommate) saying, "...it's not about what's right or wrong. It's about what works." I'm sure there's something worth learning here. Wonderful video, CNBC International, I found it very insightful. Greetings from Michigan!
@ballsack64705 жыл бұрын
There's definitely something worth learning here. Copper is a cheap resource that is available in abundance. Crude oil and gas are not. Not all natural resources are created the same. Maybe take notes from the country you live in on how to build the world's largest economy rather than looking for lessons from an Arab shithole with an uneducated populace that needs foreign labor to get anything done.

They purposely failed to mention it was the British and United States that were primarily responsible for the slavery involved in the construction. The UAE had responsibility in it as well since they have been extremely active in slaves taken from Africa for centuries. I've seen it and was both amazed and disgusted after spending a month there.
@max3zizo6 жыл бұрын
Oh really, you pulled that historical story from your ass? UAE did not exist centuries ago, only one tribe lived here over 100 years ago (Bani Yas) and they were isolated. They only enslaved other Arabs, not Africans.

Jack Tate you're not looking deep enough or you're a troll for CNBC. Watch this video and search for the others on how migrant workers from India and other places were paid nothing and we're tricked into borrowing money from family and friends before they left their countries to pay up to $5,000 for jobs that they never earned the $5,000 fee back. They were tricked into believing they would earn several times the amount they were paying for being allowed to work. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2fCkpKuj96cfrM

Jack Tate you sound like a slave owner yourself. How many people from India, Africa and other countries have you taken advantage of and called it your hard work? You make yourself feel good about the lie that they are better off in Dubai because the wages in India are less. While you British, Russian and American's extract excessive margins on the backs of migrant workers that you've tricked into making you rich. I'll lecture you and send links as long as you're alive and responding. A month is more than enough time to observe criminal activity. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2TVqZegppmMb68

Just some correction on thr info provided in the video. Withholding passports have been banned by law in Dubai since 2006. Reforms in labor law as well as labor camp conditions including regular government inspections to ensure standards are met have been imposed since 2010. In 2017 Dubai has passed a law to ban even courts from withholding passports, as well as a law for equal pay for equal work.

So many hateful comments about Dubai which I cannot comment on cuz I had visited this place as a tourist. All these scenarios may or may not be true but I had really enjoyed my time there. I know that the labour section is badly treated (thats what I saw in some videos) but it’s amazing to see the kind of vision they have to make the city better and better. Also, racism is everywhere. Even in Mumbai, people coming from rural places are treated differently.

In my view, Few reasons Why Dubai is rich: 1: CHeap Labour from south Asian countries 2: Corruption in South Asian Countries ( corruption income flies to Dubai). 3: Indian invested nearly 20 billion dh in 2017 Pakistani invested 7 billion dh. 4: The rich people in Saudi Arabia invest in Dubai because of strict laws in Saudi Arabia. 5: Because of continuous unrest in the region, rich people migrate to Dubai.

Every job has it's own value, but if I'm an MBA holder how I'll go to building work, If I'm an MBBS graduate how I'll work as an engineer. Indian education system is too bad. Unemployment and Underemployment is the major issue of this country. You said you didn't saw any job shortage in India but ILO says India has a huge unemployment rate. Which statement will people believe, yours or ILO's?And also one thing everyone is patriotic,but as a good citizen do not try to hide your sins. We must accept it and find ways to do it
