I'm Mexican and in my town there are many people with blond and red hair that descend from the French troops, when the war between Mexico and France ended, the French prisoners were able to return to their country, but some refused and asked to stay in Mexico to make their life there and personally I think they made the best decision because at that time those Frenchmen were not aware of the next war against Prussia, where they could probably die and instead had a peaceful life in Mexico and their descendants are still living, but now they are as Mexican as Tequila and they are also very good neighbors.

It actually was Mexico's most celebrated holiday. The only reason why Mexicans celebrate Sep 15th is because PORFIRIO DIAZ changed it to his birthday. So when a lot of Mexican immigrants migrated to the US to escape persecution, they celebrated May 5th instead of Sep 15th. But Grito de Dolores was sept 16th. our FUHRER DIAZ made his Birthday the day of Independence.

2:00 During the American Civil War a somewhat similar situation occurred when President Lincoln stated on no uncertain terms that the United States would NOT honor any Confederate war debts. Of course, by 1865 the US had a battle-tested Grand Army of the Republic consisting of several hundred thousand infantry, tens of thousands of cavalry, and thousands more artillery pieces, and the largest ironclad navy in the world. The European powers wrote off their Confederate loans as a loss and let the matter drop.

Didn’t Benito enforce a sort of state atheism on the populace with his overly harsh regulations on members of the clergy. Maximillian wasn’t that bad though. Mexico was also mismanaged by highly corrupt politicians. Today it is a duopoly with many of its politicians bought by the cartels. I wondered how a monarchist Mexico might develop though. Perhaps with the stability that a monarch offers rather than a fractious assembly it might offer Mexico peace in order to develop and industrialize. This is all speculation and maybe it might have United Mexico against foreign powers. A nationalist Mexico might develop in response to this. Thought if the French were able to quickly take France and maintain their momentum it may have worked. The US would be too late to intervene. Maybe if they put a Spanish prince and shared power with Spain they could have combined their forces to defeat the republicans.

And how did france loose? Well, prussia. They withdrawed almost all their troops from Mexico back to France leaving Maximiliano and the conservative mexicans behind thanks to the turmoil in Europe. Juarez killed maximiliano not becouse of his ideals or new policies, Maximiliano was more liberal than Juarez, and it showed. The conservatives who could have helped him before left him. One of the reasons Juarez killed Maximiliano was becouse of what he represented: European Imperislism in America.

Guerrilla on the north and central mountains of Mexico,Poor infraestructure and the popularity of Juarez played a great role on holding the French,Juarez won La guerra de reforma and crushed the shitty conservatives before the French invasion, he break up the church from the state (and his politics),he killed Maximiliano because he was a fucking invader, and i dont doubt that any other country would do the same if another country comes and impose a ruler against a ruler elected by his own people. Also this was way way before the Franco-Prussian war,and by the 63-64 they had been stalled then by the 65 the US threaten them so the leaved the campaign. There were other plans of invading through Nicaragua and get a supply line from here to attack Mexico.

I partially disagree, as Juarez and the rest of the liberals couldnt repel the french alone. We all know what the mexican generals did in the southern and north east mountain ranges against the french army. The amazing battles that people like Diaz protagonized in guerrero and puebla, eventualy defeating the notoriously inferior french garrisons who had to fight against the US supported liberal party. I'm a classic liberal and I'll always support what our country managed to do against the invading french empire, and I do agree that anyone would try to defend against an invading force. But lets be real, if it hadnt been for the US support and the Franco - Prussian war, the french ocupation would have been a lot longer than the 4 years the 2nd mexican empire existed in. And by the way, Maximiliano was a good man, who freed the natives from their slave-like life and did as his ideals said, and not as his puppeteers demanded, which eventually lead himself to his own demise.

@@hugoperegrina6571 The Franco Prussian war was 3 years after this, the American Civil war was 2 years of ending when the French reached the northern part of Mexico, the liberals didn't need to attack the French Juarez knew from the very start that they must hold and defend so did other Mexican generals until the US ended his civil war, people forget that Mexico was fighting a power that just fought on Crimea,Mexico didn't fight a single Pro army since the US invasion,it was a miracle that Mexico held against the French,Mexico lost half of its territory on the 48,we had 2 internal wars (54,57) and still country broke, divided by religion, poor army and country morale (until May 5 1862) and a lot of defects during the early stages of the war. And still Maximilano was no better than Juarez,Mexico was an Empire once and it turned bad. Also that the French Empire stopped sending him money not because they were going to be at war with Prussia soon, but because he spent it on parties and other luxuries instead of spending it on the population (this made his government from being very supported by conservatives to being hated) and he made the French Empire went bankrupt.

Why you didn't mention the other two reasons that forced the French to quit their campaign? The intervention turned out to be too expensive overrall and produced little profit to the french government, AND the franco-prussian relations were getting dangerously hot, so the troops in Mexico would be needed against Prussia in a possible war, which happened (the Franco-Prussian war). The northern neighbours were not entirely responsible for the french withdrawal. Besides, a strong french foothold in America would compromise US influence over the entire continent, so their almost-intervention in Mexico (they were ready to set foot in the battle of Bagdad, Tamaulipas) wasn't because of benevolence. A legend says that Juarez got their help from the Americans because of the masonry-motivated friendship between Juarez and the American elites of the time (the York rite). On a sidenote, one of the most successful mexican generals of this war was the future president Porfirio Díaz, chiefly responsible for the pacification, industrialization and modernization of Mexico, a country that up until him only had known war and civil unrest since the independence in 1821. His efforts to rise from the ashes of a war-torn Mexico to a western-European style Mexico were greatly admired in Europe.

Apparently DNA analysis revealed that Napoleon III shared no common ancestry with Napoleon and was in fact the son of Louis' wife with another man, meaning he is no Bonaparte. Nevertheless he was still a good ruler who brought France back in the great powers' club, industrialized the country, reformed our political and system and put in place some kind of an embryo of a welfare state. He also acquired new lands for the empire in Europe and of course overseas. He sure made a few terrible mistakes but overall he was a great reformer, builder, statesman and even visionnary.

Interesting video but the American part is waaaaaay too much overestimated. The French started retreating because of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and the disturbancies that would lead to the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71). Also, the French Foreign Legion stand on Camerone deserves a better representation than a simple a balloon. The kind of warfare and politics in the war were not dealt with in this video, as long as the different troops fighting there (French Metropolitan Army, French Colonial Army, French Foreign Legion, Belgian Legion, the Egyptian contingent...). Between the many who fought in this war there was Charles Brunet, the inspiration for "The Last Samurai", who would serve in the French Military Mission in Japan. Also not mentioned in this video is that the French were the great victors ofthe Crimean War, and looked over as such by the world.

Here in Sinaloa the French landed in Tamazula with the intention of taking Culiacán since Mazatlán was compromised, General Antonio Rosales went out to fight them in what would be the Battle of San Pedro Navolato, Rosales with 350+ man fight the french (Algerians and Swabian to) and mexican traitors. The battle was won because Rosales know the ground and more morale so at the end of the day he make the enemy march in Culiacán and he dont kill prisoners

This was a significant war for Mexico. It's interesting to know that the French attacked Mexico because they thought that because they were going through hard times it was going to be easier although it did not happen how they planned it. It is important to realize that if Mexico would have lost this war, the Frech would be entitled to more land in Latin America.

Am I the only one feeling bad for Maximillian? Napoleon convinces Maximillian to become emperor for his own imperial ambitions. Nut when the battle turned, he completely abandoned Maximillian resulting in his execution. Napoleon could at least evacuate Maximillian. That would've been the honorable thing to do.

@@itande0551 He was a hero as a president too. Really, not much worse than Juarez, or Madero or anyone that came afterward. Mexico was severely behind in EVERYTHING prior to his presidency. There was no economy, or even pavement on the streets of the very capital city of the country. Meanwhile, Argentina had already started building even a subway system. Diaz is the father of Mexican economy, and he revolutionized the infrastructure in the country. Was he authoritarian, yeah. So was, Juarez, so was Cardenas. So is AMLO. But at least Diaz established technological and infrastructural progress, and an jumpstarted economy. I am a political science major. And technically, we have not seen any country develop itself without the presence of inequality. He progressed Mexico more than any other president. So, technically, yeah he's a hero. Not more of a villain than Calles who is buried as a hero right next to the very same man who exiled him for the betrayal of the country.

I was raised in Mexico and no one celebrates Cinco de Mayo, when I moved to the U.S. everyone celebrated it thinking it was Mexico’s Independence. It was a big victory but it’s not a holiday nor something people celebrate in Mexico if it’s not in Puebla. Now I guess I can see why they would think it’s an independence, and something worth celebrating, I wasn’t aware that the U.S. had part in the war. Was this the only place that France tried to invade? Was there any culture impact during this time?

France, under Napoleonic rule, tried to take over several continents (other the the Americas) , including Europe and Africa. In the Americas, France also invaded parts of South America. French Guiana (in South America) is today part of the European Union (and is considered part of France).

It was interesting to know that France and Mexico went to war twice. I also now know the famous phrase it was the beginning of the end for Napoleon and where it came from. As these continuous battles occurred and thousands of men died it was good that laws had changed for New Mexico ending child labor, serfdom, and limiting work hours. Sad to know that during this time the bloodiest war was going on as well.

Very interesting. This is a coherent summary of the main military features of this conflict. I wish you could do more on the geopolitical strategy Napoleon III envisioned in his so-called Grand Design. Also, the European invasion of Mexico took place as the US Civil War was ramping up and the two wars became entangled in many ways.

@@Erick23679 Because 1) it was expensive to maintain troops far from home 2) Prussia just beat Austria and was getting dangerous in Europe 3) to avoid threatening relations with USA. After all France took Mexico and the cities with only a fraction of their troops. They just left for the reasons mentionned above. Still a mexican victory, but political victory. France was clearly military dominant. Mexico, as a (young) state, never won any war on a military level.
