Houston is a large market, where most college football fans root for UT, A&M, OU, or LSU. UH ranks fifth, at best. BYU is a national brand because of its Mormon support. Cincinnati is overshadowed by Ohio State, while UCF is overshadowed by Florida, Florida State, and Miami. Without OU and Texas in the Big XII, these four new schools are just Houston, BYU, Cincinnati, and UCF.

Now they need to add Boise State, Colorado State and San Diego State to add another recruitment hotbed to the Big 12, California. I think this is a great package for a lot of reasons. The new schools are great brands. It puts the Big 12 into 3 time zones. The conference gets into 3 new markets, 4 if you want to consider Houston as different from Texas as a whole. West Virginia gets 2 more teams in the Eastern time zone, which probably helps solidify them for the long run.

I think the Pac 12, Big 10 and ACC meeting was just an agreement not to expand. I think the only way those three conferences will add a Big 12 team is that team has to show it can bring value to a conference to help them with TV contract. That is the biggest thing that hurt the remaining 8 schools. Adding a Big 12 would cost the other schools money, similar to when the Big 12 decided not to expand in 2016. The thing that gives me hope is by getting rid of UT and OU, now we can have a real conference. The Big 12 gave UT and OU too much power which also gave them a competitive advantage against the rest of the schools. If the eight schools and the future schools are treated as equal, with time they have a strong conference. GO TECH!

One thing y'all aren't seeing is that CBS is about to have money to spend on college football. They're losing the SEC in a few years, and you can bet they'll want to be in the college football business, being that it's one of the few proven money makers left for traditional broadcast networks. The SEC, ACC, and Big Ten will be on Disney. The PAC-12 will be on Fox. What content will CBS have to offer? That's where the Big 12 can step in. You just need to build your brands and invest in bolstering these things up as much as possible.

Yes, exactly. West Virginia is staying in the Big 12 if these reports are correct. Adding schools that are closer for travel for WVU is HUGE into them staying in the conference. Cincinnati & UCF are very solid football programs that will just up their recruiting level with joining Big 12 because of then becoming a P5 school. Houston I understand because they want that area market, although taking too many Texas schools is iffy for recruiting, you've seen it be down in recent years for the other Texas schools in the conference. BYU homerun because of their market and area and $$$. I do still see the conference looking at bringing 2-4 more schools in, definitely looking at Memphis and Colorado State in the future, and Tulane or Louisiana Lafayette (if they want to hit the Louisiana area), and even schools like Appalachian State, Marshall, UAB(University of Alabama Birmingham), or Even Liberty. Those all could extend the conference reach.

I don't think it's really the Houston market that got them in. I think it has to do with getting matchups that will draw eyes. The Big 12 lost and is losing A TON of the Texas market. There are not enough devoted fans of these remaining Texas schools to draw Texas viewers. But, having Big 12 Texas matchups will draw attention. No, it won't approach the viewers for UT or A&M or OU games. But, instead of three Big 12 Texas matchups, you get six. Even if the general CFB fan in Texas is disinterested, the other two Big 12 Texas fanbases will be interested. That's regional rivalries with Power 5 conference implications. And, yes, the Big 12 remains a Power 5 conference.

The funny thing about it is schools like Texas Tech & TCU have a large alumni base spread across the state. Tech in particular is not a school people go to because it's nearby & they want to stay in the area. The people come from all over the state, go to school there, then move away (similar to Texas A&M on a smaller scale). The problem is TT hasn't been very competitive in football for quite a while. After a decade of sucking, even the most devoted fans start becoming a bit passive. Start getting some wins (beating UT or OU on their way out would help) could bring waaaay more eyes back on the future Texas School vs Texas School matchups. TT, TCU, UH, and BU still cover a lot of ground across the state.

Hell, when the PAC-12 looked at expanding into this area, UH was the program they picked as the most propitious choice for them in the future. Now, is Houston an ideal program today? Hell no, but how many are? The only ideal program in the state of Texas today is A&M. They have everything, literally everything in their favor. Even Texas has some drawbacks, as does Tech, Baylor, TCU, and everyone else in the state. So Houston isn't a perfect choice. Big deal. The Big 12 isn't going to get top-drawer programs. It was all that was left out there. They looked at the same teams several year ago, but the conference unanimously voted not to expand. But desperate times call for desperate measures. With Texas and OU gone, all of a sudden these teams look terrific! What a joke.

@@Sloppyplane37 My thoughts on why they went 12: 1) They needed a legitimate conference championship game. That requires 12 schools. 2) West Virginia is not getting an ACC invite. That meant that conference had go go east. Cincinnati was brought in an as a travel partner for West Virginia. 3) The conference is now perfectly suited to expand again in the future if everything stays the same with Memphis and USF. 4) Going to 12 gives you flexibility. My first point is they had to get to 12. Going to 14 or 16 right off the bat limited options in case of BIG 10 expansion. If the BIG 10 expands it will be either from the ACC or PAC-12. Hypothetical- To compete with the SEC the BIG 10 adds USC and Oregon. With the PAC-12 weak in this hypothetical the BIG 12 can offer Utah and Colorado membership. Or the AZ schools. If you go to big right now you limit your options for the future. 5) Time zones- New deals for revenue will be driven by streaming in addition to TV. More people live east of the Mississippi than west. BYU by virtue of being a religious school will have people paying to stream. Hell BYU has its own Tab channel by way of the church. The rest of the schools are larger TV markets then Boise. Memphis was just the odd school out.

@@TulsaSooner1979 What are you talking about? both BYU and Cinci are respectable programs. BYU has been crapping on Big 12 teams for decades now and has a nation wide fan base because of their LDS origin, they've also been playing countless PAC 12 teams for a long time now. And Cincy managed to make it to the Sugar bowl last year and barely lost to Georgia by 3 points and Georgia is now 2nd in the nation. Plus we also have no idea how the new NIL rule changes will change up the college landscape and if it'll effect the P5 schools. All of the BIG16 Conference games will have real impact, meaning, and value thru the end of the season to determine what 2 teams go to the CCG and the autobid to the playoffs. If 100,000 people in Houston tuned in to watch Houston (Other than that one time they almost went undefeated with Herman ) I would be shocked. I've been to the Stadium. I've been at the bar when they're playing and no other Texas team is. Noooobody cares. Or so few that it's rare to see someone wearing UH gear at all. Only when it matches their red kicks.
