One man's opinion- the sweetest most wonderful love song of all time. Genius, masterpiece. "Be careful how you touch her, for she'll awaken.... And sleep's the only freedom that she knows."

A Canadian cop wrote the song for his girlfriend. The guitar solo was done in one take, pretty much played as he felt the song. Definitely one of my all time favorite songs!

This song was also covered by two soul groups, the O'Jays and the New Birth. Those versions were played more often on R&B radio stations, which may be part of the reason why you rarely heard this original. But in my opinion, this is by far the best version. Donny Gerrard was a superb singer.

Have you heard the Color Me Badd version? I think that one’s brilliant.
@nkcbrazil2 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure what radio stations those people listened to or were they even around back then because Skylark had a top ten hit with Wildflower and it was all over the radio back then, much more than the other versions. I remember K-Jee and I Can Understand it By New Birth but vaguely this and hardly heard their version or the O Jays.

When you are looking at the beginning of the video that is David Foster with the long and his wife DJ. This song is considered by many to be the first/beginning of the "power ballad".

So sad Donnie passed. Met him when I was in High School in Burnaby. He started in Vancouver. Such a nice man. His younger brother was in my classes. Sorry for your loss Kenny and family. Your brother was a rare talent, back in the 70's. Barrie and I Will will always remember this song. It still makes me cry. And smile, too. BTW....Canada has got Soul.

Hi Harri, yeah, apparently 1 of the song's writers (music portion) and bandmember, Doug Edwards passed away on November, 2016 (age 70), and the police officer who penned the lyrics, Dave Richardson, died on August, 25, 2019 (age 75). I'm telling you, man, all our great ones are flopping over left and right. So, it's awesome that you are bringing them back into the spotlight. I hope they played the song at each of their funerals though ... "Let 'em fly ..." 🥀🤧😢.

Great reaction Harri!! Loved this song from its release in the early 70’s. David Foster’s first band. Should have been a bigger hit , got a lot of AM radio airplay, which back then couldn’t capture the beautiful arrangement and keyboard/guitar work as today’s technology can.

The late great Donny Gerrard, fantastic Canadian, fantastic voice, and so good looking with his lovely 'fro and 70s moustache 🤩 I knew this song from my childhood and always liked it, but had no idea who sang it. It was only in the past 10 years or so I found it on youtube and got to know that the band was led by David Foster and then more recently also heard that Donny Gerrard had passed away. May he RIP.

Thanks Harri. Donny Gerard tried unsuccessfully to go solo, but he did a lot of back-up work. Gerrard was a backup singer for musicians such as Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, and Cher. He sang backup for Mavis Staples on her album One True Vine. I cannot recall too many Canadian soul acts from the 70's either.

I've known this song but I've never listened to it really until a couple of months ago I saw New Birth singing it on KZbin and it just made me really depressed I was stuck on it but it made me feel really heavy. Then someone said Skylark were The Originators of the song and then I listened to Donnie it blew my mind he's got such a beautiful voice but this song in particular was amazing because everything came together so harmoniously the guitars the two people harmonizing the words the beat his voice everything came together just right for this song. It was so magnificent he never was able to recapture this particular phenomenon. It was kind of sad that he never was able to match this particular Magic again.
