Worked the Mt St Helens timber blowdown recovery after the 1980 eruption. In 1982, the timber salvage started in the area.. That fine pumice ash would dull a saw chain just like running into a piece of steel buried in the wood grain. Nothing but smoke from the cut line, then the chain is fully dull. Time to swap out. 10-11-12 chain swaps later, the day would then end. The industry answered back and carbide tipped chain tooth was introduced. The first time carbide tipped anything was used for consumer use, but not for consumer purchase over the counter. The saw chains had to be dropped off at a special grinder equipped shop to be properly ground, since they had the carbide tipped teeth. All chains had to be accounted for. We would pick the chains up the next day, before we headed into the blast zone. Some very long hot summer days in that exposed lunar surface, with zero shade. I earned every dime, and made quite a few. Shoveling out the base of each blown down tree, of all the ash and debris, to be able to cut it long enough for the mills. It lasted till about 1984. Even then, TONS of worn out carbide tipped chain was tossed into the recycle bin.

Many cars and truck 'died' from the ash-fall. It scoured windshields, ruined paint-jobs, clogged air filters, found its way into 'sealed' bearings! Engine oil would 'gel' with only a tiny amount of dust. You'd be surprised how little dust it takes to mess up a point-and-condenser ignition! One grain of dust, the contacts fail. The stuff would fuse and 'glaze' on distributor contacts; rough running, hard starts. Powder-fine, it went everywhere! I spent many hours getting my Mom's car running again!

I was hired by the Federal Hyway Dept to work the summer on Mt. St. Helens in 1983, we were putting the roads back in so you could go in and get the downed logs. Remember the pull out at the top of the road, where it divided and one went down into the valley and one started back down to the North? You could put your legs up against that guard rail and looking at the mountain across the river, all you could see in your peripheral vision both up and down the rivers was destruction from the blast. It was like a atom bomb had gone off.

When I go to cut planks or even firewood on an old tree, I always use my metal detector on it. I have seen the results from metal "shrapnel", wire pieces, and chain pieces going into an unprotected face & body. The ER is a lot more expensive than the time to check the log.

I agree with the posters on this story. I worked in a sawmill in Burney California. We had metal detectors that picked up metals until the temperature dropped and the logs started freezing. One night at about 2:00 am the quad saws that are band saws with blades that went under the saw deck and were about 30 feet long, slammed into railroad spikes. With nothing moving and the blades now locked inside this frozen metal-filled log we were shut down. The rest of the saws on the deck started freezing up as the water used to cool and lube the blades froze up. It made for a spectacular fireworks display but caused a lot of unnecessary damage and loss of work because many went home while the millwrights went to work with chainsaws carving out the quad blades.

I remember my dad (a logger from the old days) talking about milling logs with railroad spikes and the dangers of it. It was found (at least in our area) to be the work of environmentalists. They would drive them into the trees in the hopes of preventing logging. They would also fill the gas tanks and lubrication systems of the heavy equipment with dirt and other junk. What’s funny about all this is my dad was a sincere protector of the environment, he always recycled everything, used old instead of buying new, never cut down trees for Christmas and knew the importance of management to keep our forests healthy. The environmentalists never stopped to think about who they might hurt by their actions or who might lose their husband, brother, father, son, or friend. It was always a worry of mine. Your video brought these memories flooding back. Stay safe boys! ❤️

The environmentalist know full well their actions could potentially injure or kill someone. They used to throw caltrops onto logging roads in the mountains hoping a truck driver would lose control and drive off the road. They're literally domestic terrorists.

Back in mid 1971 I ended up in Gurdon, Arkansas after getting out of the army in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. I got a job at the Gurdon lumber Co. They hauled in trees from all over. Some trees spent years seasoning before the hit the debarker and then sawn into lumber. Most of it went into train car sized wood kilns. I worked a sorter line which sent some material into the furniture plant, some was sold to other lumber yards. We had stories about some of the things our sawmill lines hit while cutting up trees. A huge circular saw blade hitting something like a railroad spike was very dangerous. As a side note, I just looked up the Gurdon Lumber Co., it was bought out by Georgia-Pacific who invested something like $37 million in 2014 and another $70 million to upgrade its plywood and lumber operations in Gurdon in 2019. Quite an accomplishment for a company that incorporated 136 years ago in 1888.

So I'm curious, I never actually heard them say what the item was. It looked like a logging staple of maybe a small log dog. I live in PNW and hear stories all the time about different items similar to these found inside trees. As a telephone and fiber optic lineman I would see tree branches that just grew around communication cables and messenger wire but the line still worked just fine so all we would do is cut the branch on each side and leave the burl hanging in the air still surrounding the line. It's pretty amazing how trees will grow around and consume things such as these.

A tree grows around stuff left up against it or in a gap between stems. I come from a centuries old family of timer fallers and millers. We go back at least to 1900, though I am the last. If you source a log from farmyards or fencelines and not from the bush or plantation you can get stuff inside your log. My grandfather had a bottle inside once, been there a hundred of years. If men have been working nearby where the trees are then this happens andvis not uncommon.

My grandfather used to own the entire Pickett's Mill Civil War Battlefield, 6000 Acres. He and his cousins decided to cut down a few large hickory trees for lumber. They ruined 8 big saws in one day trying. They hit imbedded Cannon balls. He sold the entire property to the State of Georgia as it was the last untouched Civil War Battlefield left in Georgia as well as the rest of the US. He got 50 cents per acre. The State of Georgia used only 4 acres for a park, then corrupt politicians sold the rest to land developers. The 1/4 acre lots were sold to homeowners for $50,000 to $250,000 per lot. My family got screwed. But a little Karma got them when they tried cutting down the old hickory trees and broke several large chainsaws. A couple excavators and bulldozers also were severely damaged when they struck unexploded but still live Parrott Artillery Shells. 😂

Я в деревне купил дом 9 лет назад , во дворе росла шелковица , старая , вдвоем не обхватишь . Нависал над гаражом , решил спелить . Тоже нашел железяку внутри , штык от ружья второй мировой .

Might I suggest a metal detector. A cheap one will be fine for this. All our local sawyers have them, and they can save lots of time, money, and equipment.

I don't know what stopped my first saw dead in it's tracks but I'm going to try and cut through it with my 2nd saw without wedging the top plank and no eye protection !!

I have a really silly question...would a metal detector be of any use in finding stuff like that?
@Steelmage99 Жыл бұрын
It ought to. An experienced operator and a good high quality metal detector could find and pinpoint that stable quite easily. The question is if such incidents happens often enough to warrant buying the equipment. Checking is really fast, but good equipment is rather expensive. ....then again, a good saw is also expensive. :)

My guess is, that staple was put in the tree 60 years ago as part of a gate to keep Russia out, I dont think it worked, but it did make a good video..........
