I am glad that you and your house are fine. God had your back. Now you need a saw mill so you can make some stuff out of all of these downed trees.

Yes absolutely! A sawmill and a tractor would sure be handy right now.
@Kevin_D12 ай бұрын
@LandtoHouse you don't need a tractor. Just grab a chain saw, a pair of gloves, maybe some safety gear, and get to it. Be a real MTN man and throw those logs on your shoulder and carry them out. 😁😁

To use an old British way of looking at all these trees down is. You now have either some fantastic slow burning wood for heating or some beautiful wood for turning into some fantastic planks of lumber. All those oak are beautiful for turning into either furniture or for framing for a small project. I’m just glad you are all safe and healthy, property and possessions can be replaced but lives can’t. Your land can be used for so many different purposes & now you can look at the clearance of the woodland and the clanged to the creek as new projects for the channel as well as trying out alternatives for both power and water transfer projects. I hope you also may look at becoming more off grid especially with the likes of solar and water but maybe also wind too?
@LandtoHouse2 ай бұрын
We sure do have plenty of firewood now. Lately I have been more into laser projects and 3D printing. If I need an oak board I know where to get one! My place is off grid now except for the stove and hot water. (hvac too but I now have a mini split that works off grid)

It seems there was a direct path the wind took to knock these trees down. I went for a ride across the road and there was a line of trees down. It will likely take some time to get all this back to looking good again.

@landtohouse , sorry about the damage. 2.5 yrs ago a tornado hit mu place, 100s trees down & most still rotting in place as I'm a OLD & disabled veteran.😢 Some help & thoughts. The upturned trees (when cut) will tip the root balls back into the hole from where it was. Cut the root balls lose without moving the pinstock lines UNDER where it will be so it don't be crushing the lines. Fix the flattened barrels using a M80 firecracker it will reinflate them instantly ❤😂😂 Fun too😂😂. Sawmill time .
@LandtoHouse2 ай бұрын
That is a lot of downed trees! Most of these will also sit and rot. Good info on the root ball! I will have to be careful about that.
@markmatt91742 ай бұрын
@LandtoHouse lots of people/pets have been crushed when people cut the stem of the tree & even just taking the top off & have the root ball (spring loaded by the roots & dirt weight) tip back upright (aka fill back into the hole the tree tipped over from.) I have a 20' cottonwood stem standing upright, that stood up on me this way. Been working on/off 2 years & have only made it about halfway back trail wise where it was 3 years ago. Cleanup wise it won't be back in my lifetime 😞 😓 There looks to be a LOT of Red/White Oaks (White Oak) is highly sought after & paying almost as well as well as Wallnut right now. If you can get loggers in there that can bring in some good $.

Tropical storm Helene. Helene lost hurricane status in South Georgia. Your prep likely spared your property from more flood damage. We are in Florida, where we saw two hurricanes. In many respects, the damage from what was left of Helene was more extensive and deadly in Western NC, likely the result of normalcy bias from the idea that "We don't get hurricanes in the mountains." True statement but tropical storms can be deadly.

Maybe time for a fast satellite based internet? I'm sure you know which one I mean :) On the bright side, once you're back up and running, I'll be sure to tune in to see how you restore your hydro, and no doubt others in your area. Main thing is your family is safe, everything else can be replaced, rebuilt, or re-purposed.
@LandtoHouse2 ай бұрын
Yes I now have that fast high speed satellite internet. So far it is doing well! I imagine in the spring I will start clearing enough of the trees to get the hydro back up and running.
