You don’t know much about the country, they have long history of pillaging and burning their neighbors who were terrified seeing their Viking ships and axe wielding savages. I liked those ferries. They were a break for the driver and allowed the passengers to take in the magnificent views of the western fjords.

Nobody in Norway will force you to stay on the main road. At any time you are welcome to visit a local town. If you want to go on the water you can rent a boat, canoe, or kayak or stay on the shore throwing skipping stones. It's all up to you really.
