The model 31 is by far the smoothest pump shotgun I've ever handled, and, as a gunsmith, I've handled hundreds. The three model 31 shotguns I own were all purchased for $300 or less each. Blued steel and walnut. Amazing.

Never handled a JC Higgins model 20 huh? Actually that is the smoothest pumping shotgun ever made. I own dozens of shotguns including several model 31s and 5 model 20s. Love them both but gotta say the JC Higgins model 20 might be a tad smoother.

@@erkwit there was an extensive write up on some forum I found a couple years ago all about the model 20 (had manufacture dates and everything!)but I can’t find it anymore. Said it was introduced in 46-47 for Sears and Roebuck as the model 20 until the early-mid 60s when they decided to make it under their own name as the High Standard model 200 Flite King. I have found the JC Higgins(Sears) model a bit superior to the later Flite King but that might just be the two Flite Kings I owned were just abused more. I own 5 model 20s and absolutely love them.

I wish I had that clay bird thrower, but my wife wouldn't let me bring her home😉. You dusted those clays even with that full choke. I carried an 870 for 28 years in my work, never faltered. The stock became scuffed a bit. I personally only have a Mossberg 500 that I've had for 40 years. Just recently replaced the magazine spring as it was having trouble getting that last shell out, but it has never failed in thousands of rounds either, although the recoil pad is getting stiff in its old agd or I am less stiff in mine. My 1970s 1100 needs repair, but nobody seems to have parts. Same for my late dad's 11-48. You have quite the collection. Thanks for sharing.

I have a thing for the older American pump guns. Every publication you see today in the uplands shows a man with his German Shorthaired Pointer and an Over/Under. I'd wager more folks are hitting the uplands with Mossberg 500's and Remington 870's. I have a 70's manufactured 870 Wingmaster in 20 gauge, recently purchased a Remington 31 in 12 gauge and am actively looking for another 31 in 20 gauge. I wholeheartedly agree with his comments regarding profit margins dictating production. Otherwise, we would likely still have the Winchester Model 12 and the Remington Model 31. I'd take any of these pumps over a Beretta 686 or Browning Citori at 4 times the cost.

Love these old guns. I really like the old 31s. As far as hunting shotguns are concerned, I think I’d personally rather carry an old early Wingmaster than anything that’s been made since that time. Balance, pointability, reliability are all there as well as old fashioned grace. Thanks for putting this together. I always enjoy the videos.

Hello Uncle Remus - Let's hope they return to their former glory. It is not difficult to make first class guns - especially since there is little or no design work to be done - but the board and management has to want to do so. Sound silly to say so but money managers can't see - as they manage money - whether they are making guns or coat hangers or can openers - they see little difference. Gune need to be made by gunmakers. IMHO Take care Uncle Remus.

That deep cut corn cobb front end is easily appreciated when on those wet days. I fond that they provide better grippage when racking during firing at game. I am surprised you sold your JC Higgins. I got mine from my grandfather, and I love it. Very solidity built.

Yes sir I had a Mossberg 500 camo shock 12 gauge with a 20" turkey barrel . I Traded it for a 870 Remington black Synthetic stock and form arm with 28" barrel modified choke and a turkey choke came with it. Did I make a bad trade I really miss my Mossberg, but I like the 870 very nice gun and patterns very well. 000 buckshot at 40yds all 8 pellets in a 14in circle !! I am going to hunt deer 🦌 with it this year ! Injoy all of your videos they are great ! 👍

Before the 870, if Im correct, there were: 1. Model 10 2. Model 17 - only made in 20ga. Design used by Ithaca to make the Model 37. 3. Model 29 - Model 10 with some improvements 4. Model 31 A few years ago, I wanted to get a bottom eject shotgun. But read in a few shotgun forums, that the model 10 and 29, when they get out of timing, they were very difficult to fix. Very complicated shotguns. So, I got an Ithaca 37.

The 870 is a wonderful shotgun. I have one that has the deep blue finish and beautiful walnut stock and forearm. The other one is all camo and it has a 3 1/2 chamber. Of course it’s a great duck gun.

Mike, My wife loves her 12ga 870 LE model. It’s got an aftermarket Knox collapsing stock and a Streamlight forearm with a crazy bright light that’s activated by the user when needed. She’s got the gun set up for her liking and she understands how to use the recoil to reload pretty fast ! I’ve got to admit she works that 870 much smoother than I do. If shotgun shells ever return to believable prices, I’ll take it to the range and work on my 870 skills, LOL! Great video, as always!

LOVE this video. I buy Remington model 10's & 37's any time I come across them. The Rem. M10 is one very slick pump shotgun, its my favorite Remington. Also I own some 870's that are just solid dependable work-horses. This is a great line of shotguns. They do the job they were designed to do. VERY solid shotguns! Best of the bread I think.

BTW, the JC Higgins Model 20 was made by High Standard. It was the High Standard Model 200 rebranded for Sears. They have that same classic bolt & shell lifter design as the later Mossberg 500's. Another terrific gun that can still be bought for under $300 at any gun show. Thx again for a great video.

You mentioned Ithaca another nice shotgun. I hunted with a model 37 12g featherlight. Bagged a lot game with it too. The type of receiver where everything goes in and out the bottom made it great for hunting in rain and snow which we did quite a bit.

Hey Mike! Another great video! The first pump shotgun I ever had, purchased in 1980, was a 12 gauge Revelation model 310AB marked "Made in USA Western Auto Supply Co, Kansas City Missouri". It is definitely a Mossberg 500AB with cheaper wood. It does have twin slide bars which indicates that it was made after 1973 when the 500 was changed from a one bar version tube and slide assembly to the two bar version. It came to me with a 28" modified choke plain barrel and an 18.5" cut off barrel. All for $60 USC. Those barrels are just marked "Made in USA " and the usual gauge and choke information but no manufacturer name. Later for $35 I acquired a 28" modified vent rib barrel that does have the Mossberg name etc on it. Then not long ago sold the 28" plain barrel for $90.00. I still have the gun with both barrels. I keep the short barrel on it for home defense. I really like my Wing Masters too, especially the ADL DELUXE version from 1950-1963. I've been trying to accumulate a set of those with the matted top barrel but I'd take a plain barrel in good condition. I let a 20 gauge with the vent rib get away from me the same day I got my 16 gauge. DUMB DUMB DUMB! BTW. That's the best clay pigeon thrower I ever saw. Happy hunting boys and girls!😄

Also possibly some other Midwest hardware stores like OTASCO which was Oklahoma Tire and Supply and Coast to Coast stores but I haven't been able to document those.

I didn't know that - thanks for mentioning. For parts that come loose I often apply clear nail polish on threads etc... not as severe as thread locking compounds and can be overcome if needed - but strong enough to hold threading and other things in place.

the model 31 is probably the strongest and smoothest action in the shotgun world. A lot of off brand shotguns patterned off this action. I have a field grade, plane jane sort since back in the early 1960's and there has never ever been an operational issue. These are one tough shotgun.

Very interesting episode. I purchased my 870 Wingmaster back in 1964. I used it extensively, mainly for Rabbits. Oh, I got my fair share of Upland game too. My other shotgun is a Mossberg model 500 Persuader. My father bought a used J.C. Higgins 12 Ga. I don't remember the barrel length but, the choke was like a Cutts Compensater. That was the most smooth operating pump I've ever shot. My father was one sick man when it was stolen during a home invasion. Today is probably one of the best times for gun buyers as there are so many quality shotguns available boith used classics and news ones that are clones of the classics. Just picked up a Tokarev TX3 which is a Remington clone and resembles a trench gun, it's a good one for $250 new. Made in Turkey.

Hello J. Beau - Thank you for the kind words. Your Tokarev TX3 is a "best buy" and I've owned a few Turkish shotguns - all excellent - no issues. You're right about shotguns in general - vastly undervalued - but the market always corrects and finds value. I buy Rem. 870s from the 60s and 70s and Mossbergs and Win Model 12s at hilarious prices these days. Things will change. Anyway, I wish you good hunting and shooting!

Got a rem 17 and rem 29. Trying to get a rem 10 and 31. Rem 10 17 and 29 are well known for cracking the stocks. They are hollow and very thin. The bolt actually goes back in the stock slightly on rear travel. Finding one with out a crack is rare.

I had one of the jc Higgins one. It had a polly adjustable choke. My grandfather gave it to me the day I was born. No everyone. I didn't sell it it was lost in a house fire.

The mossberg 500 were great hunting guns. I shot my first deer and many others with a 500 with a bird barrel on it. They were and are excellent hunters.

USOG, I appreciate your videos very much. I love shotguns! Single shots, side by sides, and pumps. Autos...not so much. I would like to collect the best of the pumps, already have two Stevens "double humps" 520's, a Winchester model 12, and an older Mossberg 500. Still need to get a Winchester 1897, an Ithaca 37, and at least one of these Remingtons- probably would prefer a model 10, 29 or 31 over any 870, though the Wingmasters were good guns. If you don't mind me asking, where do you get those excellent epaulette shirts, eh?

A lot of teh 500's were dual action bars, some were single action bars. That one definitely looks like it was sold by Sears< I had two like that both had jeweled or scalloped bolts like yours.

So I’m sure you’ll read this a lot, ut who was that love.y woman in your video? You’re daughter? I just bought the Canadian mossberg 500. Same furniture, but it came with , I believe a 30” barrel, but had it cut down to 22”, and threaded for chokes. It’s supposed to be infallible, but mine had a problem with extraction, and ejection. Turns out it was a dirty chamber. Polished it up, and she still runs awesome.taking it to the range tomorrow with an old Spanish 20g SxS, and my new Uberti colt 1883

Great video, but you forgot the most important shotgun made by remington, the model 17. The Remington model 31, the Browning BPS, the Ithaca 37, and the Mossberg 500 are all based on John Brownings brilliant model 17.

You are correct that Pederson designed the M10. Also, I believe there was a model 51 or something that immediately predated the 870 and wasn't in production for long.

USOG I live in Manchester uk ,in the 1960s I had a BSA snipe ,when the IRA kicked of everything was taken from us ,I have only had air guns since then , but thank you 🇬🇧

Hi John - I've been looking for a BSA Snipe - fine single shot - I just looked at some pics on the web. A viewer mentioned the Snipe a couple of years ago - but no one knows where they are - just like snipe I suppose. I'll keep looking. At least they allow an air rifle. Thanks for the note.

I know a local gunsmith who keeps Rem 870 extractors in stock because so many made in the last 20 years break. Remington shot themselves in the foot. And no the gt did not bail them out like GM. No surprise they are MIM parts.

I had bad luck with the mossburg 500 I had. It was a 410, and it would not eject spent shells. Took it to a good gunsmith, and he couldn’t find anything wrong with it, and he polished it up, and it still didn eject spent shells. Its gotta be just a fluke, cause I know that model to be a reliable shotgun, but mine was a lemon unfortunately

Hello - I guess you likely sold it by now - but if not - I had similar experience; I took the extractor out and found that it could not move freely in the recess where it sits - so I placed the extractor on a sheet of emery paper - 320 grit I think and worked it back and forth several times - then I did the other side. I checked for burrs and found a tiny bump with my gun glasses - I put it back together and presto - the shells went flying. Maybe this would work for others. The parts sometimes are slightly too tightly fitted. All the best.

The model 10 was a delicate shotgun. This was partly because John Pederson had to work around Winchester patents. This is why he used the flipper to load the shells into the action. I don't think there is anyone alive who knows how to work on them. I have my fathers pre model 10 from 1909 which period catalogs called the Remington Repeating Shotgun.

The only disadvantage of the Wingmaster is that it is limited to 2&3/4 inch shells. The later magnum models take 3 inch shells and the Super magnums take all 3 sizes. Later models include the "Winchoke" screw in tubes. Sadly the 870 is no more due to the demise of Remington. Fortunately there are about 50 million of them out there. The greatest debate in the shotgun world is , which is better? the 870 or the Mossberg 500? The answer is easy, you need both. One in each hand.

I had a beautiful 870 Wingmaster 3" magnum with a 30" modified choke plain barrel. Paid $350 for it at auction. Sold it a few months later for $550 to a dedicated goose hunter. Remington has in print that it was OK to use steel shot in those barrels as long as the choke was modified or more open. I believe they also said nothing larger than #2 shot, but can't remember for sure. The Mossbergs are not made to as tight tolerances as Wingmasters. That's probably why they always work. You can get a lot of sand, mud etc into that action before it starts to have problems.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I like an 1187 if I can stay in the hide and shoot ducks but if I have to carry it for upland birds the pump is much lighter and most times you don't get time for second shots so then it's the 870

Remington looks like the one they call the honeycomb or the 🐝 bee calm model in the it they started making it in I started making it in 1949 till 1961

I've never been a Rem shotgun guy. Browning Winchester Beretta Ithaca those are Shotguns the Remington 870 is a club
