REMINGTON 1100: History and Relevance

After 45 years since my father bought the 1100, the 110 is still the closest to my heart. I was a young child and learned to hunt with the 1100. I still remember the 1100 when I go hunting with my friends. I am now 54 years old and I tell my friends about the magnificence and beauty of the 1100. My father passed away in 1995 and the 1100 is associated with my memories of hunting trips with my father. May his soul rest in peace.

I was given a 20 gauge 1100 skeet B for my 10th birthday in 1967. It had beautiful grain wood but I think it was built the year after the anniversary model. I started shooting skeet when I was six years old and my father and other Doctors from Charleston South Carolina started Partridge Creek Skeet Club at my Grandparents Farm in Berkeley County SC. It has moved twice but is going strong today. I used .410 and 28 gauge with shortened stocks until I got my 1100. I broke 96/100 when I was 10 years old with my full size 1100 20 gauge and my picture that was taken by a local newspaper is in The South Carolina Skeet Shooting Hall of Fame at Partridge Creek Gun Club Ridgeville. S.C. I still have my 20 gauge and have shot doves with it for years. The only problem I ever had was when it quit cycling back in the 80’s and my friend and gunsmith sent it to Remington who didn’t want to work on it because of its age. They agreed to put a new magazine tube in it because the original one had pin holes in it allowing gas to escape. I have never had another issue with it and would never shoot another shotgun. I had a Remington 11-48 when I was a youngster, which is basically an 1100 but was recoil operated instead of gas operated. It kicked harder than a 1100 but was still a good gun. I later moved on to the 1100 and sold the 1148. Wish I had kept it.

I still have the 1100 LW 20ga I bought for my father in 1974, unfortunately he passed two years later at age 54. After shooting my old Model 12 16ga for a decade, I decided to take up the 1100, it fit me so good it became my go to quail gun, what a gem.

I have an 2 3/4” 1100 with a 21” barrel and poly choke. It has killed more game than I could count. It has never failed to fire and eject shells. It will never leave me until I die.

I bought my 1100 in 1979, brand new from Dunhams sporting goods. It never failed me, still looks beautiful, still have the original box, and is going to our grandson and his 1 year old son when my time here is over.

I have a pristine 1100 12gauge built in Oct 1965 and it is truly beautiful and still very functional. I have decided to preserve it and now use a Mossberg940 PRO Field as my go to. I almost bought a new 1100, but they have been out of stock here, and a deal came up and you know how that goes. My favorite shotgun even to this day. My parents gave me a 1100 12ga with 30" full choke for my birthday in 1976. It was and is my favorite pheasant gun. I don't recall ever having any malfunctions of any kind.

I bought the same gun new in 84 was fantastic for Pigs & Goats it threw a near perfect pattern of SG 00 buckshot to about 35 meters. In the 12 years i had it i replaced the gas seal twice, cleaned it after every hunt & after 12 years the chrome lined barrel still looked new. I've had quite a few guns but the memories & game photos remind me that the 1100 is my favourite gun I've owned.

Canadian ex infantry here. When I served as a peacekeeper in Cyprus,in our platoon house communication bunker was kept an 1100 magnum slug gun for feral dog control. And a wooden crate with about 250 rounds Imperial SSG buckshot.

In the early 70’s I was shooting a Remington 870 Wingmaster, and the semiautomatic was not on my radar. Fast forward 50+ years, and now I finally bought a 1100 Classic Trap and love it. Worth the wait.

REMINGTON #1 ALWAYS! Just picked my 14 year old boy up a 20 guage 870 Field Master with a polly choke, while i was picking that up, i saw a white Diamond 1100 12 guage with not a scratch on it, its from 1966, its engraved and even the bolt is engraved, it also has a polly choke on it and i got that for him to for only $399 for each of them! Hes going to be so Excited!!!

I’ve inherited my dad’s 16 Gauge 1100 2-3/4” chamber with 30” (fixed choke) Improved Cylinder barrel with no rib. He bought it new in 1968, the year before I was born, and it was his dedicated Dove gun for my entire life. He is 82 now and hasn’t been on a Dove shoot in more than a decade but it still cycles just fine.

Thank you for this vid. Used my 1100 20g for years and years, probably taken into the thousands of birds with it. It was great, until it wasn't. It got to a point that no matter how I cleaned it, no matter if it had a new o ring or not I just had FTE issues almost every shot. Every single person I asked said you have to replace the o ring... just get a new o ring, o ring o ring o ring. I got so sick of hearing the same tired answer that was clearly wrong I just reserved myself to the idea that the gun was dead and shot out and held onto it simply for sentimental reasons. For such a popular shotgun I was frustrated that I couldn't find anybody that wouldn't regurgitate the o ring as the problem. You are the first person I have heard mention the recoil spring. Which kind of makes sense that could be the issue. It is kind of a pain to get to and if there is rust gunk etc on the spring or in the tube that could absolutely prevent the gun from cycling properly. I'm going to take it apart right now and probably order that recoil spring. I will let you know if I get it up and running.

I was one of those that tried the piston "upgrade", and it was miserable at cycling 2 3/4 shells (really anything). It took me all of half a day to switch it back to the original piston with a new O-ring. Fortunately, it takes all of like 5 minutes to change, so it was easy to do. I'll never mess with it again. The 1100 is an undisputed classic and is a dream to shoot. The one con I have for it that you did not mention is its weight. Frankly, I didn't experience ANY of the problems you mentioned, but I found it kindof a chore to lug around when carrying to and from the duck blind or when using for upland hunting or squirrel hunting. That was the primary reason I wound up buying a new shotgun. Years later, I decided to buy a new adjustable choke barrel that allowed me to shoot steel thru it (as opposed to the fixed full choke barrel it came with), and it was basically like buying a brand new gun. It went from not having much use at all to a hunting monster again! About as close to perfect as you can get. Plus, as designed, the gun has held up magnificently! The finish on the wood AND the blueing is still practically perfect.

Spot on! My dad bought 12 in '65. My grandpa bought a 20 in '66. They were about $150. In 1980 my dads was stolen, he replaced it for $300. In '84 he bought me a new one in 12g for $400. I still have and use it today. I have only replaced the one rubber o ring once. In 2000 when I turned 30, my grandpa gifted me his 20. I kept it for 21yrs, raised my girls on it. Then I gave it to my cousin for him to raise his boys on. If I could only have and keep "one gun", it would be my 1984 Remington 1100 in 12ga. (She favors high brass).

@robertboyd3863 7 chokes in one. To this day my grandpas 20g , the choke still patterns great. Even tho it had a slug setting, none were fired through it. My dad gave me a 12 in '84, i put a poly on it, and used it for mostly deer (slugs), by o4 when I patterend it for xfull and turkeys, it would shoot a perfect donut at 40 yds.. lol.. I had to have it cut off and tubes installed.

I bought a heavily used 1100. Used it for a season, took it home, took it apart. Cleaned everything really well, replaced the mag and recoil springs, new O-ring, lubed it according to the manual. In the spring I took it out and the difference was amazing. It worked like a new gun. Kept it a few more years and sold it to a friend who still uses it for skeet. He swears he will never sell it. The 1100 was, is and will always be a great shotgun. Just needs care, like all tools.

I won my 1100 in a 1982 raffle when I was a kid for $1. I stopped using it when I was a teenager and in 2023 finally got it from my parents place and added it to my collection. It’s still in pristine condition because I never got a chance to take it hunting when I was young.

love my 1100 for goose hunting, ive owned model 5s, and other semi autos but nothing compares when it comes to its lack of recoil, smooth ejection, looks, and weight distribution. (the only thing is that this gun does need cleaning after 100 rounds~ give or take. But if you are using any shotgun you should be cleaning your shotgun before 100 rounds anyways.

On the o-ring issue, get a Viton #21 for the 12, or #19 for the 20 and forget about it!

I have an 1100 i just did a complete breakdown and cleaned about 60 years of crud. I did have to get the shell stop re staked but that's it. Great gun.

Excellent video. All those hunters & shooters in the old Remington videos were stone deaf by 55 years of age from never wearing hearing protection. We shot a million rounds in the 1980s and 90s with no hearing protection, and now I'm nearly deaf with the added devilish non-stop gift of tinnitus!

The only thing I would add to this video is to mention that the gas seal is a very specific diameter thickness. You can not just use off the shelf o-rings. If so, the action will not fully close and will not fire. I learned this the hard way when a told a buddy to buy some new seals and he decided to just "pick them up from the hardware store" After a few hours of trying to get his shotgun to operate mystery was solved

I have an 1187 with " Special purpose magnum " etched in the receiver that I bought back in 1987 when they came out and it is still my go to gun for waterfowl and Turkey. And it always will be! It does everything a shotgun needs to do and never jams. I cant ask for more than that.

They were good guns. They didn't have the same balance or swing as the 1100. It was hard for someone who shot an 1100 alot, to switch to the 1187. Id love to have one in a 20 myself.

I have an 1100 made in the early 70's. It's got a plain 28" modified choked barrel. I've been hunting with this gun since I was 13. On thousands of hunts it's never malfunctioned or otherwise let me down. It's the last gun I'll sell or trade.

The 1100 testing video clips were great! Over 50 years ago, I got my first 1100 new and still use it today. In the small gauges (28 and .410), skeet shooter will tell you the sheet metal part will wear out and break with 10's of 1000's of rounds of use.(ie Feed Latch, & Carrier latch). It would be great if they made the 4 gun skeet set again as all guns had the same feel. They also need to bring back the 16 gauge 1100.

I have / had many shotguns . The semiautomatics are: Beretta A400 Xplor 20 gauge , Benelli M2 Field 12 gauge , Browning A5 Sweet Sixteen 16 gauge . I love them all ! I recently sold the Benelli , but I just may have to add a classic Remington 1100 to the mix to replace that one , just because this is America and I can . Always great content sir ! My favorite shotgun is the 1100 and I've only had one for a few years. I bought a lightly used 20 gauge VR with Full fixed choke and since I've been using it, have taken more doves with it than any other shotgun. Huge fan of the platform.

It’s very common for the magazine nut pin to be missing. It’ll function fine without it should you loose it. Take care of that. I have 3 of them. One had belonged to my dad and was hunted with for around 75 continuous years. No problems other than cosmetic. The past 20 years it’s been in a gun cabinet. Good to see a few folks on KZbin that appreciate them. They’re a fine little shotgun.

Holy Hell what a channel!! Thanks for the no nonsense and fact filled gun channel. I’ve had a 1187 since 1997 and it’s been perfect. Skeet/Trap and huntin. i.e. lotsa rounds through it. i keep it clean. tip: find a good quality gas seal ring of the same demensions, they last longer and clean the recoil spring every couple years. toothpick to clean out the gas holes in the barrel works like a charm. I’m looking for the same in the 20ga however 1970’s vintage.

I am from Kuwait and we were on a tourist trip with my family to America in 1980 and my father bought a Remington 1100 from Texas, specifically El Paso, and issued a license from the authorities in Kuwait and sent it via air freight to Kuwait. Remington was not known in Kuwait. The Browning Auto 5 was the most famous and the Remington was great. I was 9 years old and when I was 14 years old I was using the 1100 but unfortunately the Iraqis stole it when they invaded Kuwait in 1990.

As a gunsmith for 30 years, I’ve definitely seen more issues with the link, shellstops and action spring - than the magazine tube inside or outside. Solid design and evolution - I have a G3 that shoots well but I only put about 600 rounds a year through it. It is basically an 11-87 with high performance surface coatings and a long forcing cone and VersaMax bore and chokes. I like the longer competition carrier latch. The gun feels great, but I get better scores with my Beretta A400 Xcel. I’ll check out more vids…

I have an 1100 I bought 25 or so years ago, and it always seems to be the one I slways came back too. I have a 28 inch Remchoke barrel and 21 inch smoothbore slug barrel, and there really isn't much you cant do with this gun. I would love to lay hands on an 18" buckshot barrel. If Remington would only make barrels again 😒

I have an excellent condition 1100,I don’t shoot it much anymore, but I will at some point. Does anyone remember in the movie A Christmas Story when Darin McGavin points out something in the corner that turns out to be a Red Rider BB gun? That’s how I got my 1100. Funny thing was I was in my late 20s’ when my dad did that. Love that shotgun.

The first gun, that I purchased with my own money, was a 12 gauge, left had version in the mid 1980's. I used it for pheasant hunting and waterfowl. Generally, it worked pretty well, but I found it heavy to carry in the field for upland hunting and its reliability was only dependable if you cleaned and oiled it after each field outing, otherwise, it would hand up and not eject shells 100 % If I was looking for a classic auto loader, I would look for a nice classic 🤔Browning Auto 5.

My 1100 is 50 years old. i still shoot it to this day and with a light mod. choke and 3" number 2 steel its a proven 50 yard duck gun.

I've been on dove shoots, and had to crawl under someone's old truck, to get some grease off of a ball joint, to rub on the o ring of mine, or someone else's 1100 to get them back running. They truly are, the greatest American shotgun. My current one is a 79' tournament skeet 12. It's so pretty, I got worried I would beat it up to much, so I bought a new V3 after they came out. Got it for a great price. It's a good shotgun, very reliable and a pound lighter. But, it just doesn't swing like all other Remington shotguns. That's one thing Remington was known for. All there guns, mounted to the shoulder, and felt alike, (except for the 1187). I hate what freedom group done to the company. Round tree has better quality, but suck on quantity, and different models available. I wish Ruger would buy Remington too!

I never had an 1100 but I do have a special purpose turkey 11-87. Lightest load I can make that gun work with is a hot 1 1/4oz 2 3/4 inch shell. Still my favorite turkey blaster and many fine toms were taken with it. Recently got an a400 xtreme plus and I love it so I don’t think I can justify a new 1100 but if I find one in 16 gauge I might have to pick it up.

I've got two 1100s 30" trap, and a 1100 special both 12s i love um. But on occasions the gas ports in the barrels need cleaned out.

Back in the 1960's-70's I was a Kid. Dad, who wasn't a Hunter looked closely at the 1100 for Me(As well a the very beautiful Weatherby MK XXII) . Eventually my Mom gave a a very fine Browning Superposed when about 18 and I also got a Rem 550 later. Might still get the MK XXII just because of memories

Back in the 80's I was looking for a shotgun for bowling pins. I was competing in the auto and revolver handguns but only owned a couple single shot shotguns. My buddy, who was an avid turkey match shooter, advised me to stay away from the 1187 that had just entered the market and buy a nice used 1100 for $200. I competed with it maybe twice before deciding to stick with handguns. Within a year the bowling pin match had closed. I put the 1100 in the safe and it is still there after about 35 more years. I need to get it out and see if it shoots ok. I only put about a box through it if that, but don't know how much the previous owner fired it. I would say it was a fair investment and I probably haven't lost too much to inflation.

It used to be that everyone who hunted Central SD with an autoloader had a pump gun for a backup. Some still do. Mostly out of old habit, I reckon. They were never totally reliable in a blizzard or icy conditions. Today, if all I have is a Super 90, I'm thrilled.

I have a 1977 1100 and there still isn’t a finer shotgun ever made. Just wish it was a 3 inch gun but it’s just 2/3 and it’s hard to find turkey loads to hunt with. I use my Stoeger most the time but I still use my 1100 for small game. Still preforms flawlessly. They just don’t make them like they use to

From trap loads to sabot rounds, my 1100 shoots them all. Just keep spare O-rings and change them out once and a while.

Have both a 12 gauge and 20 gauge light weight. Love them both but the 20 is sweet.
