I think people blame Temba Bavuma less in test match cricket. People have known for years that he is a gritty, patient #5 that played holding innings in test match cricket. He absolutely commands his place in the test team, and should be test captain automatically when Elgar steps down. The problem with Bavuma for a lot of people is his White Ball top order batting, where he is slower than most every White ball batter they have tried in the last 5 years. Reed Hendricks, Rickelton and Janneman Malan have better numbers and just look better, not to mention that Roussouw and Brevis can open as well. It seems to defy (non-quota) logic to keep him in the team, let alone make him captain. This also extends to his ODI #3, where he averages 30 striking at 80 post-pandemic, after being given captaincy as Du Plessis played less, and (no offense to him) seemed to be a downgrade from Du Plessis, Amla, and Roussow

Most fair minded SA fans have no issue with Bavuma in Test cricket and recognise he's the best of a bad bunch. He'd certainly score more hundreds (in current form) if his job wasn't to consistently fight fires. The issue with Bavuma is his place in the white ball teams and the fact that he captains SA in T20's and ODI's. He's not good enough for SA in white ball cricket and, whilst you are right to point out the lack of decent batsmen in our red ball side, there's plenty of talent and depth in white ball batters in SA and he is 100% taking a spot that would go to a more deserving player, such as Reeza Hendricks last year.

SA in this period lost guys like Conway, Leus Du Plooy and maybe few others as well. Rilee Rossouw wasn't available for sometime . Now, QDK has retired from red ball game at a prime age. These 4 essentially could have been the core of their contemporary batting lineup had things been better.

The best players for SA fans are always those who aren't playing. You can't have a low average if you never bat. We need to takke off our rose tinted glasses and say yes, those are good players, but they were never guaranteed to get runs. E.g. Rossouw hasn't scored the big runs we've expeted of him since being back in limited overs cricky.

South Africa have a lot of good young batsmen but they're never getting picked Lions opener Josuha Richards: Average 49 and Lions middle order bat Ryan Rickleton: Average 55 come to mind). Heck they have a genuine allrounder averaging 22 with the ball and 36 with the bat in 4-day cricket and is never getting picked. I know Delano Potgieter's bowling isn't the quickest but Boland proved that you don't need out and out pace to get wickets regularly. The other problem is that South Africa only plays 8 FC games over the whole season, and while the SA20 might allow for more rounds in October rather than another T20 comp its no guarantee that they will provide more FC games in future seasons.

As an Australian, Bavuma reminds me a bit of Steve Smith (though of course not as all-round good). Great in Tests, a very good 50 over guy (though no finisher) and a mediocre T20 player. Just not big and belligerent enough (things which used to be SA strengths, just like on the rugby field). But I agree you can't blame Bavuma for SA's batting woes. Nor can you blame the quota system because your pace attack seriously rivals ours and it is subject to the same system. I watched pretty well all the recent Aussie Test series, either live or on TV. Honestly, your batters were riddled with technical errors (which Ricky Ponting - a famous batting technician - really enjoyed pointing out in the commentary box). So it is not a matter of talent but of coaching. You need a new coaching team.

The best case scenario for South Africa would be for the national team to turn their fortunes around by getting in better batsmen and start winning more; for SA20 to be a massive hit and make cricket reach a far bigger audience than it currently does; for quota players to perform on a consistent basis for substantial participation of coloured cricketers at the domestic level for a revision of the quota system; and for the economy of South Africa to grow all this while at a good enough rate to make its cricket market as lucrative as either Austalia or England and CSA to have a far greater say in ICC matters breaking the hegemony of the Big 3. That's the only way to save and advance the project of cricket's globalisation.

A few people who know South African cricket better than I do have suggested that the first class game is much softer than it used to be and there's a lot of easy runs on offer, which is perhaps why so many have struggled to make the step up to Test cricket. Maybe we're perhaps seeing the endgame of the Kolpak years. Certainly, an SA side with Conway, du Plooy and possibly even van Buuren would be a bit more consistent.

I still think Markram is class (the series against aus and India proved that) but for some reason hasn’t gone on. Maybe he should get more chances at the right place in the order. You’re harsh on Petersen. He has made important runs and looked good doing it. Would’ve been interesting to see him over here. The weird thing is though that the main guys who seem to be next in line are guys who would be outside quota requirements. You would assume that a Rickleton or Stubbs could easily replace de Bruyn, Erwee or van der Dussen, without hurting quotas. I think everyone forgets how badly they’ve been hit by losses due to kolpak etc. Imagine Abbott, Rossouw, Olivier etc with a transition period from their gun side and multiple tests to their name. They lose talent, experience and star power (which equals revenue) based on money and opportunity. Until world cricket get their heads together and stop CA, BCCI and ECB deciding revenues etc. we will continue to have sub par nations outside of that. The SA t20 tournament has been created down the barrel of a gun and it’s destined to fail. It can’t compete with big bash or make a dent in the consciousness of fans in other countries. In every country, fans will still care more about performances in tests and internationals than in domestic hit and giggles (despite the coin the players may get). Every Aussie fan will remember Smith’s tons in the ashes than his sixes ones. Likewise, I imagine everyone in SA will remember de Villiers ton in 17, or Kallis’ first double ton, over Brevis’ ton off nothing in a meaningless t20. Ultimately, it all comes down to cash and opportunity. Countries may shoot themselves in the foot at times, but in order for the international game to prosper it’ll come down to whether the “big 3” decide if it is worth allowing others into their cabal for long term health or if short term revenue wins out (which is the corporate model that most execs take). It’s sickening to see how far SA have fallen from the side that beat us over here in 08/09, 12/13, 16. They didn’t lose an away series for years and they should get more kudos for being the best side between the great Aussie sides and the current Aussie one (or maybe the current Indian one) despite the difficulties they have with money and (understandable) politics. Maybe a greater look into the travails of the domestic and international game in SA would help. There’s more to it then just “they can’t bat and they select the wrong ones”.

After this generation bows out, SA will have terrible bowling attack as well having numbers as bad as these batters. The reason why the FC average has boomed in the last few years (e.g. Erwee, Petersen, van der Dussen, Verreyenne, de Byune, etc.) is because the crop of good bowlers have moved out of SA plying their trade in other countries (mostly England). The fall between FC and test averages is so steep is because they are really playing club level bowling at FC level and are getting found out at test level. The only guys whose average don't drop much are Elgar and Bavuma - that's because they played fair amount of FC cricket before 2017. These 2 and Zondo are the only ones whose FC average shows their true quality. Every generation in SA have provided 2-3 top quality batters (Kirsten-Cullinan, Smith-Kallis, Amla-de Villiers). None of these guys (except Elgar) will make the bench in SA teams of the last 30 years.

@@saoirsedeltufo7436 You're absolutely right, and I'm definitely not criticising. I really dislike it when people use a player's place of birth as a stick to beat opposition teams with, so that certainly wasn't my intention. People emigrate all the time, for all kinds of reasons, including for work, and I have no objection to them representing whatever nation that they qualify for. Trying to draw any distinction between different emigrations almost always becomes arbitrary. For me it's just a fun way of imagining hypothetical teams, or an alternate reality in which Hilton Cartwright and Gary Ballance are racing to surpass Graeme Hick's imaginary record for most test runs for Zimbabwe.

Their best talent doesn't want to play test cricket for SAF. De Kok used a lame excuse for quitting because he despised the politics. De Villiers and Du Plessis did the same. Rilee Rossouw would rather play counties cricket, which pretty much tells the full story. At this point they may as well throw David Miller into the test squad.

The politics is true, it is not a bs excuse, they want to play a sport not be hamstrung by Marxism in fking sport. So let SA cricket die with its quota system which in itself is discriminatory. SA did the same thing with it’s public servants and engineers, and now they are going down fast. Ask Zimbabwe how that went when they pushed the white farmers out, the 1% of farmers who fed 90% of the population.... yeah Zimbabwe went through a famine as needed foreign aid to feed their people, the iron being most of the aid come from predominantly white countries, the joke writes itself, oh and then Zimbabwe begged for those farmers to come back. What double digit iq scoring person thought it was a good idea kicking out the very people who had the skill set to farm a land that was never farmable in its entire history.... oh Marxism you beautiful thing

Ngidi our default 4th seamer averages 22 something Wagner would dream of. He Couldn't buy a wicket this season. Players have always left for more money nothing new. Players leaving doesn't suddenly make them great. Wagner wouldn't be first choice in a domestic team here bruv. Jokes aside.

SA sticking to Bevuma as their T20 captain when their own franchises (driven purely by money and hence logic ) won’t even pick him as a player , clearly shows that SA will never learn and will continue to be illogical in team selection. They deserve to lose until they figure out how to strike the right balance in societal issues and cricket skills.

Perhaps we can ask how the hell India got bundled out for 38 against Australia. It’s a lot more relevant as this is about test match batting. If SA could bat, they’d be a top 3 team with their bowling line up. The numbers clearly show them to be the 2nd worst batting side and the worst away from home. Isolated one offs are exceptions that prove the opposite.

@@RatelHBadger nz’s ODI side is in transition and without Williamson and the mystifying selection of Nicholls they’re going to be inconsistent. Especially with Latham’s form deserting him. I also think they went too hard as they knew their current bowling line up (missing 5 of their top 7 bowlers, only 3rd and 5th available) means they have to score above par. NZ, like Pakistan, are typically a bowling team. Restricting teams to par totals and consistently knocking them off. Playing against this new India, in India, with this bowling lineup was always going to be extremely challenging.

South Africa lost many of its next generation cricketers to political correctness and Kolpack deals. Leus Du Plooy, Jacques Rudolph, Marchant De Lange, Duane Olivier, Dane Vilas, Colin Ingram are just a few who couldn't play for South Africa much. Add some of these in the present setup and then analyse the team. A few years back there was this name which cropped up many times, Rudy Seconds. Where is he today? South Africa have themselves to blame for the state of their cricket.
