I was a kid and I LOVED this movie when it came out. I even went back and watched the old cartoons and played the franchised game that came out on Wii (super fun). Now that I'm 22, I'm gonna drop a tab and rewatch this once I get the chance!

How did it bomb? It was too good. Yup. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Speed Racer is my all-time favorite movie. I think it seriously could have changed the future of cinema if it succeeded financially. It's a shame that it didn't too very well at the box office, but I will never forget the film that basically defined who I am. Loved the video! :D

Here’s a fun little anecdote; when I was ten and this movie came out, I got the DS game for it because how could I not. Well, when I got the game, it came with a movie ticket to see the movie which just blew my mind. Well, I saw the movie and never got to use my ticket which I pretty much forgot about until like 2 or 3 years ago when I found the game sitting in a drawer of stuff. The thing still blows my mind on the basis that this is an opportunity that I will probably never get back.

It was so good. It saddens me how much it bombed. It was genuinely beautiful. I just wish more people got to see it and more people appreciated it. It would be great for them to rerelease it in theaters. It would definitely make more money if they released it in theaters today

God I wish I saw this movie in imax. Also for as cartoon and silly as the movie comes across as. That ending always brings a tear in my eye. It's like the equivilant of the ending of gurran Lagan. It's just so simple and Ernest you can't help but get hyped. 😊

This movie is severely underrated, and it bombed because moviegoers were too damn cynical, and it was around the time Hollywood wanted more "gritty" and "realistic" stuff because audiences only wanted big-ass explosions and such, a phase the American film industry ultimately never got out of.

I think it’s one of those cases that the film was ahead of its time. I myself who grew up to speed racer wanted an adult version that gave a more violent tone. Clearly a different vision but I know see it was meant for more of a calling to anime fans.

I wholeheartedly believe that if it came out 10 years later I think Speed Racer would have blown everything else out of the water. It's much more closely related to movies like Into the Spiderverse and Thor Ragnarok with its saturation and over the top, but the Wachowski's were just a decade too early. A re-release at any time in the next 2 years would absolutely kill

I suspect that if the Speed Racer movie had come out a few years after Teen Titans and the other frantic animation shows it would have done better with kids. Only adults with a deep love and understanding of anime and even the original show could really appreciate it. Otherwise it is just a somewhat weird visual experimental.

It’s funny looking back when I was a kid I was obsessed with speed racer and I collected every matchbox and hot wheels car I could get, then out of nowhere it just stopped, now A decade and some change later, I am absolutely obsessed with cars and racing. I guess a little part of it stuck.

Thank you. This film and Nightmare before Christmas are what FILM can really do. Far more interested in animation for most of my life, This Film gave me hope that we were finally entering an age of Live Action like nothing before it. Sadly, I’m still waiting. Waiting for the color and excitement. Waiting for the fun. Dredd tries to and Waking Life seems to, but still I’m waiting. PS... The Wizard of Oz bombed and the original Star Trek was canceled ... and yet.

The Dark Knight may not have been in theaters yet, but everybody was waiting for it (including me). The final trailer was released around the time Indiana Jones 4 premiered later in May. Given that and the popularity of semi-realistic Iron Man, I'm not surprised this didn't do well. It seems to me that indies like Pulp Fiction and The Blair Witch Project have a better chance at success while doing something less-usual is because the costs are MUCH lower. Pulp cost less than ten million. Speed Racer needed to be a Batman-level success with all the marketing and merch. The expectations were simply too high. For myself, I didn't love it. Yes it was spectacular, but like you said it was way too long...and then there's the end, where Speed is going SO fast that he actually KILLS his competitors during that final race! Not very endearing, even if they were not nice people. "Speed Racer" reminds me of "Blade Runner" more than anything: Too different, too aggressive for general audiences at the time...but who knows, maybe it will be influential in ways we don't yet realize.

You should watch it again. Speed never killed anyone in the whole movie. Those two last racers get out inside those protective balls the cars have when they recieve too much damage. But agree in the rest of things you said!

Given they way everyone I knew who actually saw it either enjoyed or loved it, but all the reviews slammed it, I've always found the way it bombed had a surreal-to-suspicious quality. Maybe I'm influenced by the big-money-pulling-the-strings story of the movie itself, but I always felt like there was something else going on that had nothing to do with the actual movie itself.

I remember me and my family went to NYC I think just to this in IMAX (i'm from over an hour north so there's plenty of closer theaters, maybe it was an early release my dad got tickets to through work or something) and we had mixed responses. we then went to an italian restaurant and they had a framed picture of spongebob that tom kenny signed and wrote some nice words about the place. Haven't seen it since though. damn I miss being a kid.

Ufff I feel you. I really liked this movie. Just watched a month ago for the first time. I had the same emotion with Tron Legacy. Beautiful movie. It gives you an amazing immersion and it was pretty earnest. I really adored the style and sitting in the cinema it took me completely into this world. In 2019 I had watched Alita: Battle Angel and also a fantastic movie, a great adaptation that completely takes sucks you in and with a very strong protagonist. And it dared to do things for artistic value. So many complained about her look especially about her eyes. But I personally loves them. They make her emote soo well. And it easy to feel every emotion of her. The eyes are the windows to the soul. And her windows are big. Alita didn't bomb but it was far from being a financial success and with her and Tron and Speed Racer it shows that people are not ready for this kind of imaginitive movies. They are too far astray from what people are used to.

Those who did not bother to watch/experience Speed Racer 🏎💨🏁 didn't deserve to. Every single shot in that film perfectly captured the exhilaration of the TV 📺 show. The film's visuals delivered as much of story as the dialog. I was enamored by the original anime series when it aired in the early 1970s. There was no Speed Racer merchandise in stores back then so my dad bought me a white toy car and painted it to resemble the Mach 5! My childhood was full of wonder & amazement partially BECAUSE of shows like Speed Racer (and Star Blazers)! 😁♥️🌹

Showing Speed Racer and then cutting to Lion King and Aladdin just shows how bland the colour grading in those films are. There is no comparison. Also What Happens in Vegas made me realize how much I dislike Cameron Diaz's performances, at least when she is doing her typical rom-com acting. That movie sucks all around.
