The Etruscans are often portrayed as a sophisticated people and bearers of a rich culture, but in the military field they suffer from a generalized cliché, which depicts them weak and soft, at the mercy of both the Gauls and the Romans.
In reality the Etruscan culture, already from its formation during the first Villanovan period, showed itself capable of expressing a fierce military aristocracy, and although it subsequently came to assimilate many characteristics of the armament and tactics of the Greek world, it was capable of reinterpreting the hoplitic model in a local way, merging it to the Italic combat style.
It should also be remembered that if the Etruscans undoubtedly ended up falling under the blows of the Gauls and the Romans, the Roman army in its first phase was precisely an expression of that same Etruscan world that it was preparing to overwhelm.
