The Sphinx was DEFINITELY painted in bright colors! A survey of the monuments at Luxor reveals some quite large areas of paint that survive almost intact, especially on ceilings and other areas protected from direct sun, wind, and rain. Ancient Egyptians loved lots of color on their monuments!

Of course, the Sphinx was also brightly coloured with pigments, some of which are still evident on the brow, and it would have been nice if you could have included the uraeus, an upright cobra figure, to finish off the head, since this was a critical symbol of power in Ancient Egypt. Still, a pretty good representation of the Sphinx as it would have looked. Nicely done.

I'm Egyptian . The Sphinx is very important in relation to the Egyptian civilization. Indeed, there are many miniature Sphinxes found in tombs, and you can see its nose and face that it is close to this, but with a straight nose and a little smaller.

It’s possible that the Sphinx was originally painted in different colors just like the ancient Roman and Greek monuments, and statutes. It has also been theorized that the Sphinx was originally built at a time that Egypt had lush vegetation, which would have been thousands of years before the pyramids were built.

@michaeldeierhoi4096

The only archaeology evidence that supports that claim comes from conspiracy theory wonks trying gain notoriety. And THE ONLY so called evidence is that supposedly the Sphynx has experienced more erosion then can be explained if its age is 4500 years. The problem is that that statement was not based on any evidence of erosion patterns of limestone of which the sound is carved from. Further there is no evidence of this alledged earlier culture that supposedly carved the Sphynx. Conclusion:. Any claims for the Sphynx bring significantly older than 4500 years is wild baseless speculation. Have a good day.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the body was covered in sand with just the head sticking out until it was dug up in 1930. It makes me wonder if Romans, Greeks, or even the Egyptians themselves carved the head not knowing how deep it was buried, resulting in it not being proportional to its body. If this is true then the sphinx could be a lot older than we thought
@sarahrose5772
@sarahrose5772 Жыл бұрын
The recent discussion about the rain and flooding damage on the body has led many archaeologists to speculate it dates back to the Younger Dryas. This would date it around 11,500 bc at the latest. But the face has been recarved since the original construction. It’s absolutely nuts.

It was a lion, and 10,500 years ago would have been perfectly aligned with the Leo constellation. That with over 10,000 years of water erosion coupled with the fact that the original megalithic Sphynx temple (on the level of its paws) had an Egyptian temple built over the top of its north west corner!. So for people to say the Egyptians carved it is a bit rich.😏

@Xl Bubblehead yep. The step pyramid is built over the top of a deep shaft with a giant granite box at the bottom. There's an identical shaft right next to that bad construction and another three in the immediate area, at the same depth as the Saqqarah tunnel system. I posted a video after my visit. nice job. the human head on the sphynx is thought to have been added later, reshaped from that of a lion's head, as the human head is out-of-proportion smaller than thre rest of sphynx's lion body. its also thought to have been built, like the great pyramid, LONG before the other two pyramids and before egypt even became a "nation." personally, i believe these to be the case. "ancient," pre-civilization humanity was much more advanced than we give it credit for. i'll argue that our species has been actually moving backwards on so many levels the last 6000 years, not forwards. its my belief that humanity has been recovering from the collapse of past civilizations 10,000 years old or even older.

Nice work on the restoration! I would be curious to see what it would look like if the head were expanded to be in proportion with the body. The ancient Monument makers were masters of proportion and on the Sphinx the head is too small leading to the idea it was recarved. My hunch is a chunk of the original limestone cracked off either during or shortly after construction causing them to improvise with what was left.

The beard is the wrong design to the fragments that still exists of them. The beard was originally carved with a braided design, and not straight perpendicular lines. Fragments of the beard can be seen in the Egyptian museum in Cairo. Other pieces are housed in the British museum in London.

They could have restored the colors and the Cobra badge above the head as well.

That was very good. I think it had a snake on the top of the head piece. The snake was a symbol of royalty and was only allowed for king or queen.

The Sphinx was called Hor-em-akhet ("Horus of the horizon") by King Thutmose III about a thousand years after it was sculpted. We don't know the original name. The nose was purposely damaged, allegedly by a Sufi in the 14th century, but archaeological evidence indicates that it was actually damaged hundreds of years earlier.

The French Occupation Army fired rifles and artillery at it and did most of the damage.
