In this history documentary we explore the history of the US Navy. We begin in the colonial period of British rule where most of the coastal defenses were undertaken by jerry-rigged sloops and schooners while the Royal Navy handled the larger engagements. With the outbreak of the American Revolution however the Continental Congress was forced to create its own Continental Navy. This was composed of a small number of small frigates while the bulk of the American fleet actually consisted of privateers. The US fleet managed to score some wins at sea but it was the assistance of the French Navy which helped turn the tides of war. After the revolution, the new but bankrupt United States was forced to disband its navy. This had the effect of leaving it incredibly vulnerable. Over the following decades, the US Navy would slowly invest in rebuilding its fleet to combat threats from the Barbary Pirates and others who preyed on American shipping. The War of 1812 with the British saw the US score some early wins but saw it be utterly dominated at sea when the Royal Navy sailed in with a strong fleet that had just recently won the Battle of Trafalgar. The US Navy was expanded as a result of this embarrassment but it would be the conflict of the US Civil War which truly brought about a renaissance for American Fleet. During the conflict, the northern strategy at sea involved a blockade of the south which prompted an arms race between the Union Navy and the Confederate Navy. Ironclads and steam ships emerged from this evolutionary process and came dominate the waves. By the end of the war, the US Navy was the second largest in the world after the Royal Navy. The post war years however saw a decline in the Navy that would only be turned around with renewed conflict during the Spanish-American war. From this point on, the United States Navy was recognized as being critical to United States foreign policy. President Roosevelt would overseen it's renovation with the construction of the Great White Fleet which sailed around the world. However new technologies like the HMS Dreadnought risked making all contemporary warships obsolete. World War 1 came soon after and poured gasoline on the fire of innovation. Now the battle at sea extended to the air above the waves and the depths below it with the deployment of planes and submarines. Coming out of the First World War, the US Navy was recognized as an equal to the Royal Navy. The interwar years saw more funds poured into the American Fleet including the construction of new aircraft carriers. Word War 2 would see a massive overhaul of the US Navy as it battled the Imperial Japanese Navy across the Pacific. This conflict and the Cold War that followed solidified the power of the US Fleet and led it to become the force it is today.
I hope you enjoyed this documentary on US Navy history!

Are you kidding right ? you have a few hundred ships to defend the coastlines and most are far out to sea, those that are not docked and under repair or scheduled for decommission. USA ship yards and building capacity is in sad shape compared to other countries abilities to rapidly construct many new high tech ships, in quantity. Of course massive oil tanker ships and shipping container ships are in greater demand than military ships, but still - USA has fallen behind several other nations in their ocean fairing abilities. And many USA ships still in use are very old and obsolete.

The US has the first and 2nd largest airforces. First is the US Airforce and the 2nd largest airforce in the USN. They are considered separate airforces because they are separate air forces with separate leader ship, composed of different aircrafts, with using different tactics, and having completely different doctrines. Just like how the US Army and US Marines aren't the same they are completely separate armies (an organized military force equipped for fighting on land, though the marines also fight in the air and sea)

People keep experimenting with levels of armour and speed and gun size. Your engine can drive so much stuff forward, and you got to decide what that stuff should be. One of the losing ideas in Jutland is the UK battlecruisers that wanted to be a sort of speedy battleships with the big naval guns still on, that tried to outmanouver artillery fire.

The reality was that neither the uk or the us wanted the war. The us put up with British press ganging us merchant sailors into the royal navy. Credit to the royal navy some of the sailors press ganged into the royal navy were deserters but quiet a few weren't. There was a call to go to war by some us congress but the president and other parts of congress wanted to avoid a war. The prime Minister at the time also wanted to put a end to stop us ships and forcing sailors into the royal navy preferring to work with the us to find royal navy deserters but while the letter expressing this goal was slowly making its way across the Atlantic the pro war side of congress managed to sway the president and the us invaded Canada as response to the impressment of us sailors. Also I can't find anything that says that Canadians burned DC. The us army had also mostly abandoned Washington preferring to not try and hold a city in the middle of a swamp. Don't forget the us also burn Toronto and captured new Orleans.

@Justin 12O16E26 actually not quite. Submarines are a threat, but we have several countermeasures. While a submarine could cause damage to a US carrier, they would have to be careful because US carriers are never alone. Not to mention we have one of if not the deadliest submarine fleet. If a sub wanted to sink a us carrier, they would have to get past aircraft designed for ASW. If they aren’t detected, they’ll have to get past cruisers and destroyers that also equipped for ASW. Which it in itself is hard to do. If detected, the submarine would have to get out before being sunk. This isn’t all, there is also an attack submarine always nearby on the lookout for enemy submarines. If they somehow manage to get past these measures, then they’ll have to target and hit the carrier itself. Even if they do hit, it will be hard to sink a carrier as they have a double hull. It’s not impossible to sink, but definitely hard. In war games there were 2 instances in the past 15 or so years were a sub got close enough to cause serious damage if it was a real war. The point here is submarines aren’t guaranteed (heck no where near guaranteed) to sink a carrier

On land, they're cannons. On board a ship, and they become simply, "guns".
@mydogbullwinkle
@mydogbullwinkle 4 жыл бұрын
+Anthony Fletcher The fact that you know that there's a difference leads me to believe that you already know why a ship's weapons are called _guns_ , but in case anyone is interested, here is some info behind the terms you've noted. This is what I've been able to gather in bits and pieces over the span of several years, but I'll be the first to admit that its far from being academically robust. I invite corrections to any facts that I might've gotten wrong here. _Cannon_ is a catch-all for any large-bore gunpowder-based weapon. A _gun_ , in military contexts, is a crew-operated direct-fire weapon system, and often has a smooth bore to better accommodate a variety of projectile type (ideal for loading with canister/grape shot, chain/bola shot, as well as inert/solid shot). Machine gun, shotgun (while not crew-operated, they are generally direct-fire, smooth-bored, and can accommodate a wide range of projectile types), the main armament of a tank, etc. could each be classed as a _gun_ ; a rifle, pistol, or carbine, for example, would not be referred to as guns in most English speaking militaries. In the Age of Sail, a ship's weapons were rarely borne against targets beyond point blank, and so were used in a direct-fire capacity. A howitzer is a _cannon_ , and a tank's main gun is a _cannon_ , but a tank's main gun is a _gun_ , while a howitzer is not a gun, since howitzers are used for indirect-fire. Likewise, a mortar is not a gun, since it fires projectiles at a near-vertical trajectory in order to deliver projectiles (generally bombs and shells) over wall fortifications. _Piece_ is another catch-all, one that refers to any gunpowder-based weapon system, whether that be a pistol, grenade launcher, howitzer, carronade, and so on. It has been used in English, and can be traced back virtually to the arrival of gunpowder-based weapons technology to the English speaking world. The use of the term _piece_ is often mistaken for being simply "wannabe gangsta" slang, but it is actually a technically legitimate term when referring to a gunpowder-based weapon and has been for about 500 years in things like ships manifests, captains' logs, and other official documents. There is also a widely held folk etymology that incorrectly traces it back to a corruption of "peace" from the Colt "Peace Maker" revolver that saw wide use during the 19th century.

@mydogbullwinkle
@mydogbullwinkle 4 жыл бұрын
@@hyperx72 If you want one word that refers collectively to both rifles and pistols, you could use _weapons_ or _small arms_ . If you want to be specific to one particular platform, you'd usually refer to them as _rifles_ , _pistols_ , carbines , etc. You can also use their designated model number, for example, _M16_ or _M4_ (Nomenclature varies by branch and country). You can refer to them by anything that they _are_ , but _gun_ in a military context refers to a class of weapon platforms that rifles and pistols do not fall under. Military operation demands clear-cut, unambiguous, and universally understood language, and so many words as used in a military context have retained the meanings they had when they were adopted (that sometimes being hundreds of years ago), while the same words may mean something different in non-military speech due to having undergone linguistic drift.

This means, the US can win any war, regardless. Of course, in terms of pure battleship tech and so on, yeah, maybe the US isn't the greatest right now, but again, with 3,000 nukes or whatever, nobody cares. Also, America is the most armed nation on Earth, with the largest stand-by army other than China (though India is big, as well). I fail to see how America could lose any 1v1 war. 10 million men, guns, 3,000 nukes, and endless ships.

It feels a little understated just how powerful the US Navy in 1945 was. I think it was nearly 600+ ships strong, with nearly 20 Battleships and at least 26 Fleet Carriers (CV), among them the largest, most advanced warship on Earth, CVB-41 USS Midway (as of September of '45). And that's not counting Escort Carriers (CVE), which number over 100. AND no less than 200 of the best Destroyer Classes in the world (Fletcher, Gearing/Sumner). The US Navy was terrifyingly powerful. A Carrier fleet was almost untouchable by any conventional means, with every ship in the fleet boasting Early-Warning radar and Radar-Assisted AA Batteries. Carriers had just begun to become proficient with directing CAP fighters via their CV's radar. That fleet could have conquered the world, easily. It could have crushed anything else at sea, even the Royal Navy, which it nearly now dwarfed. (Fun fact, most of the Royal Navy's Carriers were American Escort Carriers.)

The British love taking credit for things they even tried to destroy. The reality is, the US Navy made them wake up and take notice. Even we could defeat the French frigates. "We have witnessed the gloom which which that event cast over high and honorable minds. we participated in the vexation and regret, and it is the first time we have ever heard that the striking of the English flag on the high seas to any thing like an equal force should be regarded by Englishmen with complacency and satisfaction." - Times " We would gladly give up all the laurels of Detroit to have it still to say that no British frigate ever struck to an American. We have sunk our own maritime character, for with a navy that could admit of no competitition, we have suffered ourselves to be beaten in detail, by a power that we should not have allowed to send a vessel to sea." Times "The news spread a degree of gloom throughout London, which was painful to observe. The invaluable reputation of the Royal Navy was undermined with incalculable consequences. It was a calamity of twenty times its amount that might have been attened with more serious consequences to the worsted party" Times on hearing of the Guerriere's defeat “It is not merely that an English frigate has been taken, after, what we are free to confess, may be called a brave resistance, but that it has been taken by a new enemy, and enemy unaccustomed to such triumphs, and likely to be rendered insolent and confident by them. …how important this triumph is in giving a tone and character to the war. Before WW1, there were 90 millions of people in the US, 40-45 millions in Britain (excluding colonies), 39 millions in France (same), and 60-65 millions in Germany. @Aniruddh sorry to break it to you but that won’t happen. in their current position it isn’t possible, they don’t have all the resources compared to america. remember the gold rush when america was founded? there’s so much gold in america and that’s why they have a military to boast. China is in the asian hemisphere, meaning it’s a mess over there. look at the western continents vs the eastern/european continents. if china were to pour all their money into their navy they would stop private funds and hell would break loose in that area. Russia and Ukraine are already at war in that area and it’s a bad blooded conflict. China is near the same area so they have to be on alert about that. they have no reason to invest into a navy because of resources, oil, money, time, efficiency all play into factor. and even if they did their navy wouldn’t be as strong because they lack the technological advances. also, if you look into history, china has never really had a power in its navy. in the area of china, they don’t need a navy because they’re surrounded by land.

@@EmperorLionflame I'm American, yet have to say you have a point. I suppose that this comes down to two things 1. The ending of the post Cold War Pax Americana, which many of our politicians and a good chunk of the populace don't realize has happened yet. Compare that with Europe which has been under almost constant threat from something or another, and they know it. Europe has been upgrading while the U.S is producing. Only recently has the U.S started advanced research into replacements and upgrades for a modern war scenario, lack of experience has lead to disasters like the F-35 and Zumwalt. 2. The change of U.S operational objectives based on the Middle East conflicts; The Navy is able to still rely on these aging technologies because so do their enemies. Nearly every part of the U.S military development program has been preparing for desert/urban warefare against insurgents, until now. Yet this is hampered by the belief that technology from 20 years ago that was effective in one battlefield will be effective in others. Granted this has proven true at times such as the AK 47 and M16 type weapons. Furthermore similar issues apply to Russia, the country most Americans fear most, so little has been done since little has been done in Russia. The U.S is still certainly a contender though, but with circumstances as they are, only time will tell if the U.S Navy and Military at large will have a rude awakening or rise to the challenge.

Every European power helped the fledgling US overthrow us Brits - the French, the Spanish, Prussians, Dutch, Portuguese, everyone joined the queue to ferry supplies, troops or trainers. It was an opportunity to poke the British in the eye because we were capturing all of their ports and ships and so the idea of helping a small group of Brits overthrow a larger group of Brits was too good an opportunity to miss, I mean somebody had to arm and train them so that Brits could murder Brits in a giant bloody fuckfest where the only winners would be the other European powers. Except the small group of Brits turned into a huge America and the large group of Brits became even larger by turning their attention to Asia and so the other major powers now had two English-speaking enemies who would piss on their campfire at every opportunity - a true Anglo-American spit roast! I think there's some respect for the US naval armament, as soon as the USA starts to get serious about investing in ships of the line. Less so for the US Army. The powers of Europe are looking at things like the Civil War, amphibious actions on Cuba and the Philippines and the expeditions into Mexico against Pancho Villa or the hunt for Geronimo. They see a volunteer militia that forms up around a cadre of officers and instructors and then disbands. Not like the conscript armies of Europe. The UK is the exception to the conscript armies, and they at least have this core of professional troops they send on expeditionary wars to the colonies.

In fairness as far as anyone knew at the time they did. Aircraft carriers hadn't yet come to define naval warfare. The United States focused its tactics around carrier combat out of necessity and as it turned out, carriers were the future and Japan's navy was stuck in the past with giant floating targets like Yamato.
@Zamolxes77
@Zamolxes77 4 жыл бұрын
@@SeekerLancer Uhm yes and no. Japan was already very experienced around carrier tactics and they had more of them. Problem was a little more subtle in my opinion: support mechanism. A carrier is only as good as the planes it carries, and the planes are only as good as its pilots. Japan and Axis forces in general had an antiquated way of employing their pilots, they kept using them until they were DEAD. Allies would rotate pilots to RR, and they would become instructors for new batches of pilots, passing on the combat experience they earned. As a result, the fresh green pilots Allies churned out gradually became better and better fresh out the gates of pilot school, while Axis pilots were the exact opposite: raw barely trained recruits and a few overworked and overtaxed aces. By Midway, Japan was already approaching critical point, where they could not replenish their pilot loses fast enough, with sub par replacements, so their carriers were already functioning at reduced efficiency. Only reason for a carrier to exist is to launch planes ! Is easy to claim in hindsight that carriers were the future, but most navies already knew that by 1935, some even by 1918. Japan put emphasis on battleships because well after Midway they didn't had much left to put emphasis on. Ok I'm greatly simplifying thing here.

@joshuacranmer4093
@joshuacranmer4093 4 жыл бұрын
@@apollomars1678 That's wrong on just about every level. Japan was one of the first countries to break the naval treaties, and their premier warships in World War II were far in excess of treaty limits (Yamato was twice the limit!), and they were facing battleships sized to fit the treaty limit (although the US did invoke the escalator clause in their last batch of ships). Their navy was not small, easily larger than any of the forces it would conceivable be facing (the US Pacific Fleet and the UK Eastern Fleet, let alone the Dutch or French Navies). Note that while the US and the UK had larger navies overall, they also had commitments in other naval theaters, so only the force they could bring to bear in the Pacific theater without sabotaging their other commitments should be included. Calling Japan the "biggest empire in world history" is pure and utter fantasy. In terms of land empires, Japan was smaller than the major countries it faced (China, US, UK, and eventually the Soviet Union). Sea power doesn't aid much, because you also have to stack it up against the US and UK which at the height of their power effectively controlled the entire world's oceans. I'm not sure Japanese Empire at its height would be larger than the East India Company at its height, let alone the actual Royal Navy. If you mean by "efficient" that the navy makes the most effective use of firepower out of total naval tonnage, the Japanese Navy doesn't appear to score all that well. The navy tended way too much to large capital ships, being heavily dependent on the Mahanian doctrine of a single decisive naval battle. Japanese antisubmarine efforts were laughable, resulting in the near-complete destruction of Japanese shipping by the Americans; Japan also failed to use their torpedoes to good effect, despite them being literally the best in the world. Indeed, even in the surface ship engagements that actually occurred (primarily the Battle of Surigao Strait and the Battle off Samar), the Japanese Navy was defeated, with the Battle off Samar seeing the fleet fleeing from a force made up of destroyers, destroyer escorts, and escort carriers that combined were smaller than Japan's largest battleship. And I'll just add that one Dutch warship successively evaded the Japanese capture of Java by pretending to be an island. The US held several advantages in WW2. Its immense industrial capacity--the US built a larger navy in WW2 than the rest of the world combined--is definitely a major asset, and anyone planning on taking on the US without taking that into account is an idiot. But beyond that, the US was also one of the more innovative naval countries, quickly switching its tactical plans when the old ones were sitting at the bottom of the harbor. It also generally had more aggressive and competent naval commanders, more effective damage control systems, better radar, automatic fire control, not to mention the quality of its logistical support efforts or training regimes. Unquestionably, any naval historian will tell you that Japan *starting* the Pacific War against the US is by far its greatest strategic blunder in WW2, and even some contemporary admirals in the Japanese Navy (most notably Yamamoto) recognized this.

@@k3nfr0st39 English is a language cobbled together with other languages. That's why the rules are so inconsistent. "Marque" is lifted straight from French with no alterations, you can't even blame English for that one.

18:29 - Just because you are also counting sailing ships, coastal ships, and river fleets, if you count just the armored ships capable of fighting at open sea those numbers become rather less impressive from 60 ironclads you drop to something more like half a dozen. Nothing that could really make a big impression againts the French Navy for example.

I disagree. After all, it (along with other things) did intimidate the French enough to persuade them to leave Mexico, derailing their imperialistic plans in Latin America. Blockading, besieging, controlling commerce, aiding the ground attack, etc., are also vital to the strength of an efficient navy; they should not be discounted.

@@jpok626 if you think that the French got out of Mexico because of the US Navy you are at best mistaken. The US Navy wasn't even a factor in that decision, just the 16 armored frigates of France would be enough to send anything that the Americans had to the bottom pretty easily at open sea. What Napoleon really took into consideration was the fact that Maximillian couldn't muster much support from the conservatives, as they didn't like him for being a liberal, nor from the liberals, because they were too power hungry and wanted the power for themselves, they were led by Juarez after all, the guy was a stubborn hypochrite power hungry little dictator. Napoleon also knew that the US could send weapons to support their puppet in Mexico much more cheaper than the French could supply their own troops and their own puppet government. And last but not least, Napoleon wanted to end the war quickly from the start, he never wanted to occupy Mexico and that was exactly what he was forced to do, he wanted to install his puppet and leave, the french were not trying to annex parts of Mexico like... well, you understand already I think.

CANZUK I don't think Britain has that many nuclear specialists that work in the military (compared to the US), but Britain did create a non-nuclear powered aircraft carrier that is on the same level as the US' nuclear powered aircraft carriers...

Funny Memes even then nuclear powered have major fucking draw backs, first is the fact more and more ports are not allowing nuclear powered vessels into their port. The price is absurd and you have to look after the carrier way after it has been decommissioned

This was a pretty informative video to watch. I liked it. But I think it might have been a little better had this video been broken down into many separate parts and talked about in detail from one conflict to the next. It would allow more details about the navy in this or that conflict to come out. But those are just my thought on this subject.
