Well, since you brought up not liking Doom 3, this movie is loosely based on that game than any of the other. Reason being is that, not only were both projects releasing only 1 year apart, but because id Software used early presentations of Doom 3 to help sell the movie license.

They also put a demo of the game on the DVD, and walk through on how to play doom 3, just dont tell the man about the woke doom movie that was released not that long ago... no doom guy, instead of was dooms guys little cousin that failed to get her gun license.

A good doom movie should follow the Halo: Forward Onto Dawn route: Where it is basic marines at a training facility that comes under attack, trying to figure out what happened and then get saved by the doom slayer who leads them to safety

This. Let them be badass. They can fight, but they're constantly on the retreat and defensive. Make them competent but overwhelmed. That way the Doomslayer is more impressive when he finally shows up.

Silent Hill was... okay. Ironically they made a great Resident Evil movie and accidentally called it Silent Hill. Silent Hill is meant to be a lot less bombastic than RE, but the Silent Hill movie had a very RE level of action. Which tbf, is better than the RE movies which are just all action and no horror at all. Kinda like what RE itself was from 2005-2017.

As much as he kind of shits on it, the 1st Person scene at the end is one of the most interesting decisions I've ever seen made in a movie. Of course since it's in a bad adaptation it's not a perfect 1:1 recreation of the games, but it genuinely tries its best to embody the spirit of what Doom is and succeeds imo. If only they could've kept that up the entire movie.

For me this movie is a guilty pleasure. It WAS a terrible "Doom" movie, but I liked it as it's own spin-off, not having any interaction with DOOM prior. If I was a fan of Doom before this came out, I 100% would've been entirely disappointed.

To be fair. doom is actually a decent sci-fi movie. It's not great, but its also not bad by any means. It's only considered such a miserable failure as an adaptation because it ditches everything expect the names and locations. I had never even heard of the games as a kid so I found the movie pretty enjoyable as a popcorn flick when I saw it as a kid. Seeing the games later as an adult helped me understand why so many people hated it.
