How did this journey go so very wrong? Paris trip woes!

Sadly the journey home went even worse so more to come! Forgotten passport, points failures and congestion on the tube conspire against me. Then I do battle with French public transport!
HubNut merchandise can be found at hubnut.org - please buy generously as this trip has emptied the car fixing pot...

I don’t envy you that dawning realisation that you had forgotten the passport. Literally the most gut wrenching thing. In my early adulthood, my Father tipped me a nod and with a naughty grin taught me what he called the London Underground creed. Crossing himself, he recited “spectacles, testicles, wallet and pen” touching each in turn! (His, not mine for clarity!)😂. It does require a garment with breast pockets but…. Every time I leave the house on a journey now I remember the exchange with a smile of fond remembrance and in the certain knowledge that I have checked off the absolute vitals.❤

As my French wife just said "Welcome to the Paris region". LOL I wonder if you experienced the pack em in like sardines RER train, usually happens when the frequency of trains reduces due to an infrastructure failiure elsewhere. Last year and this I've sampled the Eurostar to come back to the UK for visits. When leaving the Paris end it is usually quite smooth through the customs etc. Coming back through London Saint Pancras, it was bedlam on both occasions. Everyone in a panic and chaos everywhere. Rude customs staff too. Back in April I had a particularly grumpy French customs officer. He just seemed to take it to a stereotypical French artform. Bon courage...

Can relate regarding calamitous capers of the journeying kind I have to use public transport to see my son, as I currently don't have a car, this weekend involved: Delayed trains Having to change trains mid journey Further delays of trains whilst travelling, due to the timetable being out of sync Missing connecting trains due to said delays Then on the journey on the way back home, having to pay £62 for a taxi because the rail replacement service failed to materialise! I've put refund and compensation requests in, and I'll wait to get some money back, but what a palaver! It gives me even further impetus to get a car again, sod the cost of owning and running one! Public transport is abysmally bad!

Seat comfort - You'd need a time machine to fact check me, but East German trains, back in the day, favoured the very upright church pew style, eschewing any form of padding! They also had a guard, escorted by a conscript with a gun, checking your tickets four time in the one journey! Happy days

Crikey! what a conglomeration of barriers. Having got the Eurostar last year we agree the train journey is amazing so fast. We did not appreciate being kettled at Kings Cross waiting for the indifferent French border guards to eventually start processing us by having to wait to scan our passports , weird arrangement with baggage scanning and then having to face the actual guard himself on British soil. Found that aspect the most demeaning. As we were arriving at Amsterdam Centraal we got a text to say that our return train had been cancelled. Rebooking was our nightmare and then realising on the return journey that we had been waiting at the wrong end of what must have been a mile long platform and that train in the far distance was our Thalys train , we had to spend too long sitting opposite two morons who seemed to think sharing stupid music videos with each other and sticking their legs out was the done thing. Train journeys for us are having to cope with the general public with their steaming smelly bowls of meat based product or hour long conversations talking twaddle. At least you didn't I hope, have to cope with that particular cake based topping. Looking forward to viewing the tour.

French people can be very confusing. We were in Paris on a college trip and being respectful, I went to put some rubbish in a bin, which was just inside a gate of what appeared to be a small public garden, with benches and children playing at one end. As I was depositing my rubbish, a smartly dressed French man berated me quite strongly for doing so. None of us had a clue what the issue was! Would he rather had thrown it o the floor, to join the quite prolific amount of dog deposits on the pavements?

@@HubNut Yes, you have to allow for contingencies if you have connections (and live relatively remotely), and you had a series of them. But that's no different from driving to the airport, or taking a ferry across to France. The reason you were so stressed and delayed was because you forgot your passport. But it looks like you had a good time at this Citroen bash. Didn't even know there was a place like that.
