I second, and third, these comments 👍🏻 I will hazard a guess that the complete set of Citroën Conservatoire vids will make good on the logistic oopsies. Last time that I was in Paris, I got thoroughly confuddled both on the Metro and on the rail. Luckily, I was with a French speaker - who managed to get into blazing rows with Metro staff - to the level that police were going to be called !! So, yes, it seems France requires quite a bit of practice to deal with certain parts of it. Maybe all of it! My few days there were certainly quite stressful. At least, got to see the “propeller” on the Moulin Rouge ! Please try and focus on the good and solid stuff out of that trip, Ian. The museum, Montmartre, and whatever other bits nourished your noggin. Miss Hubnut, will, I’m pretty sure, forgive you… but she will, I’m pretty sure, delight in not letting you forget. I’m asking you - to do your very best to remember (and to counter Carly’s comments) with the positive experiences from the trip. We’re all on learning journeys. All of us. If we’re not, we might as well pull down the blinds. Keep the fire lit, and your steam up, Ian. And keep your chevron cogs meshed.

Having visited La Belle France and Paris, the first thing you notice is around 75% of the cars are French. There are very few British or Japanese marques on the road, Fords being especially scarce, unlike the UK. The next most common marque, after French ones, are Volkswagens

This is what makes your channel so eminently and repeatedly watchable, Ian: it's all about what you really experience, cock-ups included, and one would almost dread your learning from your mistakes (but I do not wish upon you any further financial woes: it's a bit of a dilemma, I suppose). Oh, and DO slim down the fleet somewhat ... although I suppose you're thinking about that very thing from time to time yourself. Greetings from Belgium.

Sorry for all the travel difficulties...that's one reason the last time we went to Seattle, we elected to drive (5500 mile round trip); plus, we could bring more stuff. That train at 1:50 appears to be an older Pielstick; they always reminded me of old Winnebago RVs! Looks as if lots of the newer trains, while still diesel, are opting for smaller engines; looked as though they were individual, self-propelled railcars. Thanks for the travelogue!

As you were over 30 minutes late due to that missed connection due to the late running GWR train you can claim Delay Repay from them - that's 50% of your train journey home ticket price so that will help with the budget issues. That "class 57" was a pair of class 153's. The class 197's are very nice - been on them on the North Wales line, small bins inside though. Similar to the class 196 we have in the West Midlands.

Ooh thanks, though my first claim is going badly. Two companies fighting over who has to pay...
@andyt25104 ай бұрын
@@HubNut I had that recently with a delay between 2 companies - the automated systems will claim it's the other one (in my case it was the second one that was at fault - the first operator arrived on time). I would take screenshots of the trains you caught on Real Time Trains and use them as evidence to prove who was at fault (even if the delay was caused by a signal issue or a broken down/late running train by another operator - the train operator you was on would have to refund you, and then claim this back from Network Rail or the other operator). I've had 100% of the entire journey back once when a late running train caused us to miss a connection and arrive over an hour late!

Great video and don't worry about passport and ticket troubles. We all make mistakes, but things could always be worse. I think I would have found driving into a busy city more stressful, particularly with traffic, parking and emissions to worry about. Thank you for uploading some of the rail journey. I haven't been to Wales for years and it's interesting to see Cardiff Central looking so different. I miss the good old days when it was a hot spot for comfortable loco-hauled trains like the Intercity 125s to London and Swansea and class 37s to Rhymney and Fishguard Harbour. You'd love the English Electric class 37s; one of those at full chat (particularly going through a tunnel) is a fantastic audio experience. Not many left on the mainline now, but there are loads at heritage railways. I'm guessing your nearest operational ones would be at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway or Severn Valley Railway. I think some trains from Cardiff to Manchester and Holyhead are still loco-hauled, albeit more modern locos hauling BR mk4 carriages. I think you can even get a meal on the Holyhead service. Don't get me started on Voyagers though. They are significantly worse than the loco-hauled trains they replaced.

Crumbs, that was a saga. But I think we've all done stuff like that. I once showed up for a speed awareness course a day early, and had to book a hotel for the night. I spent more on that hotel than I woud've got in a fine! The train seen at 14.49 is formed of two Class 153 single-car units, built by Leyland at Workington, and based on the Leyland National bus (the window spacing and rivets give it away). Originally intended for branch lines, but due to some frankly hopeless decision-making which resulted in a shortage of trains, Transport for Wales ended up using them on long-distance services like Manchester-Cardiff. Not the greatest experience for passengers (at speed they're LOUD), but it's a tribute to the design that they were able to handle work for which they were never intended. Welsh train services would have fallen apart without good old British Leyland products.

The finest diesel trains, sound wise, were the HST sets when they had their original Paxman Valenta power units. The greenie spoilsports eventually replaced the units with MTU units (what ever they are) and for me totally ruined them sound wise. Considering they were sort of a temporary thing until they sorted out the APT the class 43s did a splendid job. Now they are gone from the network and some have been sold to other countries.

I had a trip to Scotland, two trains, two coaches, a 2 hour wait outside Carlisle Station in the early hours, a 3 hour wait at dumfries Station for a bus because the train was 20 minutes late and the bus I should have caught had already gone. Finally arrived at my destination to pick up a car for a 420 mile drive back . The car was fine for the first 200 odd miles, then the power steering packed up, then the engine management light came on and the car ran really rough and used way more fuel than it should have. Eventually made it home close to midnight. Car is still sat there until I can get enough energy to work on it. 😅😅

As an Australian, I never even knew the conservatoire existed, now I have discovered it & found out it is going to close before I ever get to visit it, but thanks entirely to you I still get to feel as though in some way I have had a chance to see it. Furthermore, as an Aussie growing up with a fairly localised car culture, your channel has given me an exposure to the weird & wonderful world of French cars which has served to broaden my interests. Over the last couple of years your channel has quickly become a favourite and while this adventure might seem like a loss, it has still brought many of us a lot of fun.

I once travelled from Manchester to Cardiff by train. Going down was pleasant enough, in an Inter City train with around 8 carriages. Coming back, on a Friday afternoon, was not. The train I caught, around 1.30 pm, was a 2 carriage, smelly old diesel one, packed to the rafters. We got as far as Shrewsbury, when we were ordered off the train and got on to another one, which somewhat resembled the train I'd travelled down in. By then, so many extra passengers had got on the train on its way north, that the replacement train was almost full. You wouldn't think it possible that a 2 carriage train could carry almost as many passengers as an 8 carriage one, but the latter had tables included in the layout, the older train was designed for running short journeys, not 100 mile plus ones between Cardiff and Shrewsbury.

Manchester already has a tram link to Piccadilly train station and to the Airport. Recently, after the scrapping of the HS2 line from London past Birmingham i.e. not going to Manchester any more, we were informed by the Government that part of the money saved by scrapping HS2 would be spent on providing a train/tram link to the airport. It was then pointed out to them such a link already exists, and has done for a number of years. BTW, that plane journey was quick, on your video. At least it's slighly re-assuring to know that it ISN'T actually just me that has these sort of problems, 'cus it feels like it when you're on your own. Strongly related and felt for you. I fear this is going to be the future for most of us, as we are slowly driven out of our cars and off the roads/cart tracks.

I have not quite done an entire trip so on this scale, but i did once on a work trip arrived for a train, manage to get through barriers, into 1st class (work expense!) and travel both ways on the same day to a customer meeting (london to north/return). Only to realise on the return trip that actually i'd booked my ticket for the week before!

Exactly the same thing happened to me at Cardiff Central yesterday. My late-running train came in on Platform 3; my connection was sat on platform 4 as we pulled in. The platform attendant watched me running from my train across the platform and still actioned the doors to shut, telling me as I got to them (still closing), “the doors are already locked, mate”. We both knew it was a lie

They're awful. Have complained, but I suspect it won't do much good.

I couldn't agree more Ian Louts on trains don't have consideration for anyone else... Hope you can get a long rest after this...

The BB22200 class electric locomotives (1:50), among a number of SNCF locomotive classes that shared similar profiles, were nicknamed "Nez Cassé" (broken nose). Their styling is very "Because French" and therefore very Hubnut. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nez_Cassé
