Varg has a really interesting approach on music. He explained, how he experimented, and practiced different harmonies over the rhythm guitar parts, so this overdubbed bass drum thing sounds like a valid method. Also he explained the copy/paste methodology of recording Belus and other newer albums, similar to the way how electronic music is getting recorded, so :) Ps. Varg is a genius, I like his work and him very much.

Better than shifting the second track, it would be better to record it with both feet, the first "empty" without pedal on every eight note as recorded in first track and second playing the pedal one sixteenth after the eight note. You get what I mean? It's still fast, but only feet, doesn't require hand coordination, so an average person can still do it.
