How difficult is living in Taiwan when you don't speak Chinese?

I have lived in Taiwan since 2008 and speak only a basic level of Chinese, but there are some foreigners that live here for decades without ever learning the language at all! How do they do it and how difficult is daily life in Taiwan without knowing the local language?!

For my first five years, I didn’t speak much mandarin, just a couple words and phrases. Taiwanese people were always so willing to help and offer translation, try their best to use body language, or help in any way they could! That’s one of the main reasons I love Taiwan! Taiwan’s convenience is the reason to visit, but the people are what makes foreigners want to stay! ❤️ good luck on your mandarin journey! You’ve got this!

Hello from the UK! I've been a fan right at the beginning and I love your content, always so insightful. You have truly embraced the culture and introduced Taiwan in-depth, which as a Taiwanese expat, I find perfect for showing my friends here for them to learn about my country. However every time I hear you refer Taiwanese Mandarin as “Chinese”, my heart sinks because I’ll need to pause the video and explain to my British friends that Taiwan is not China, which is surprisingly confusing to westerners. I appreciate your explanation in the video, but I really hope that you recognise the difference between Chinese and Taiwanese Mandarin and the fact that a lot of people mistake Taiwan for China, and calling the language we speak “Chinese” is not helping the constant battle of convincing people around us that Taiwan is not part of the PRC.

Love this old style video... But miss that school desk so much. Thanks for sharing this topic, language might be the main barrel to communication, but i think culture plays more important part in communication. Taiwanese is friendly and willing to help the foreigners, language is not a big problem here. But learning more local culture will help you groove in the society more quickly. By the way, after quit the teaching job, the speak pacing is much faster. Glad that I have watched your videos for such a long time, happy to know my listening is improving... Thanks~

The chefs of a restaurant are generally skilled at 2 or 3 dishes at least nationwide and rarely are they only confined to being good at only 1 dish. You can get around Taiwan without speaking local languages because students have had to learn English since primary schools through senior high schools for at least 20 years in Taiwan. Even though most people you encounter here aren't good in English they're pretty familiar with the English environments but if you want to get involved deeper in the environment, being able to communicate in local languages is a bonus.

Even I am a retired Taiwanese people, used to be working for foreign companies, speaking English at work with colleagues from U.S. without any difficulties to do presentation related to my job in English from time to time, I am still learning English from tons of KZbin videos to broaden my English vacabularies. English definately is far more difficult than Chinese, from my perspective. As you might have known, there are only 1X,000 characters in Chinese to learn but millions of vacabularies in English. I also found a fun fact based on my KZbin videos watching, in U.S, most of kids can't express themselves very well in English even until 5 or 6 years old, but in Taiwan, a 4 year old kid, or even youger, can speack Chinese very well. This proves English is not easy to learn even for native speakers. Seems people around the world keeps saying Chinese is one of the most difficult languages to learn, if not the most. I don't believe this from my personal observation/experience.

5:55 you point out a HUGE difference between restaurants in the west and those in Asia. In the west restaurants do (more or less) all dishes OK. In Asia each restaurant does 1 - 2 (or a few at best) dishes really well. 7:30 ask a local. Don't try to learn how to do stuff yourself (unless you are into bureaucratic S&M) - ask a local. They are happy to help (and know all the 'hacks').

Speaking the local language is very important to live in any country especially where English does not help much. So it is better to learn Taiwanese to live in Taiwan. Just like how it would help to speak Japanese in Japan or Italian in Italy. I am talking about those who want to live in foreign countries and not for those who are just visiting.

I think it's something to do with a person's personality in terms of willing to learn the language the local people speak in a foreigner place where you're living for a "long" time. We see foreigners can speak quite good Chinese only after few months arrived in Taiwan, whereas we see foreigners living here like 25 years (my English teacher), and still can't speak one single sentence in Chinese !

I have to say... when my husband(Scottish)and I(Taiwanese) lived in Taiwan for almost 7 years. He could not speak any Chinese at all, beside basic just like most of foreigner. I am not saying that's good! But TW is really really foreigner friendly place so.. really... as long as you got a friend willing to help you and a cellphone! Everything is just fine! PS: he still mix up with dumpling and sleep! XDD And about the relationship, I think cross culture relationship is hard! NOT just because of "Language"! Like my ex-BF, he lives in Taiwan for almost 30 years and can speak 98% perfect Chinese however sometimes he's still having hard time to understand why in this situation.. you can't say this and at the other similar situation.. so even after 30 years living in TW, sometimes his coworker still had to phone me and asked me about his Chinese! Yes, if both of you can 100% understand BOTH side culture slam, joke or thing you should not do.. from my experience!! It's IMPOSSIBLE!! What you needed is someone willing to step back and TRY to understand both side story then this relationship will work! You can't expect a foreigner understand EVERYTHING even he already lived here for 14 or even 30 years! Just like you can't expect a Taiwanese to understand EVERYTHING about UK(in your case) so..... In my opinion, I think the girls you met.. they date foreigners but... They have NO idea about actually LIVING and have a relationship with one!! And same suggestion to you... sometimes YOU have to step back and explain yourself more clearly!

Do they use English plus Google translate? I don't know how easy it is to get around in Taiwan with English only, because I'm an intermediate Mandarin speaker so I just read and spoke it everywhere.

I heard that the current government policy is to turn Taiwan into bi-lingual (Mandarine & English) country by 2030. I don’t know. You may want to wait on mastering Mandarine.

Me reading the comments “most Taiwanese ppl speak a mix of mandarin and Taiwanese so if you speak mandarin you’ll still be confused”. Me 👁👄👁 I guess my brain could learn a 3rd 1/2 language... Yeah 😭
