I stacked Advanced Pharmacology, Advanced Pathophysiology, and Neuropathophysiology/Psychopharmacology ALL TOGETHER THIS SEMESTER. There were times I was ready for the psych unit myself. HUGE VARIABLE: Did you finish RN school 2 years ago, 5 years ago, 10 years ago? The experience in psych as an RN is irreplaceable...BUT... personally, working with child/adolescent psych for so long caused me stagnate and forget so much of the medical side. My patients were physically/medically stable and healthy 98% of the time. I felt like I had to relearn a TON.

That’s a good amount of classes but it’ll be worth it when you’re done. I finished Rn school 7 years ago. Yeah, I know what you mean. I left psych after 2 years to work in the the ICU and ER just so I can keep up with the medical side and be more well rounded.

@@LifeofaPsychNP Yeah. Small school. Classes are only offered every so often. Made the decision to go PRN unscheduled at work and take the chance, trying to get through all 3 at once. Pushed my graduation date up by 7 months. It's been torture. Probably the most trying 16 weeks of my life. I did some geriatric as an LPN back around 2007-08, then made myself do some time on telemetry and then ortho after my RN. I'd have been screwed right now if I wouldnt have done that. Still, that was a LONG time ago. Lots of relearning and then digging deeper. Great channel man. I appreciate the time you put into it. Thank you.

Honestly, I felt the same way, especially when I first started as an NP all by myself, but you really just have to get used to seeing patients consistently and with time, it’ll get there. Hi Psych Dude! Quick Question: Can I run a therapeutic practice as a PMHNP? I initially was planning to become a LCSW to run my own therapeutic practice. But now I am considering PMHNP? Would I be able to do the same thing that I planned to do as an LCSW?
@LifeofaPsychNP
@LifeofaPsychNP 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can run that as a PMHNP if you start your own practice. you would have to start your own practice or find a concierge psychiatry office. Typically, most employers that hire you want you to do medication management because therapist are way cheaper to hire compared to us. Yes, technically we are qualified to provide therapy and can bill for it.

U would have to start at nursing school and become an RN before u can get yout msn and become an np. Its hard if u are use to having free time. U have to read/study a lot. Its not really hard it just takes discipline and under standing u have to sacrifice the way u use to live and prioritize your studies for the short term. If that seems hard or daunting its not for u.

I will be applying to NP school next year. I initially wanted to do FNP....But now I am considering NP in Mental Health. However, my only motivation for this decision is salary (the money!). Is financial motivation the wrong motivation for NP in Mental Health??? ( I am a ED nurse)
@LifeofaPsychNP
@LifeofaPsychNP 5 жыл бұрын
To be honest with you, I would not just do it for the financial gain because you never know if the pay will stay the same throughout our years of working. You don’t want to be put in a situation where you hate what you do and it turns out the pay will be equivalent to a regular NP pay. Dealing with psych patients gets tiring and it’s way diff from the ED, i have experience as both a psych RN and ED Rn in a level 1 trauma center. It’s wayyyy diff. I would say do it if you enjoy dealing with psych patients but if not, don’t do it for the money

Do you have a valid RN license? You really need to have a BSN for any type of MSN program. I know you probably already figured this out since you asked this almost a year ago, but there are direct entry programs that take about 3 years full time and halfway through you get your RN and finish with an MSN and allow you to take the boards to get certified as an NP. These programs require a non nursing bachelor's degree though and a number of prerequisite sciences such as biology, microbiology, Anatomy/Physiology, nutrition, etc. Every schools requirements are different though.

very good question. i havent had any experience with online programs, but im sure it is based on how much effort a student puts into it. A huge concern of many online programs is finding a preceptor and i def have seen student that are desperate to land a preceptor. As of right now, there is no clear date on if or when they will require a DNP. I agree that working is good, but sometimes you have to sacrifice to be in the career you want to be in
