Disagree. If you’re in a tourist focused town, there are small “hole in the wall” restaurants with amazing food that still cater to tourists and save themselves the hassle of EVERY person coming in asking what each thing on the menu is, so they proactively have the most common translations. If you’re in a tourist TRAP area, you’re going to pay that tourist tax and that is the case anywhere in the world.

It's not just the city's young people who speak English. I'm 64 years old, and I learned French and English in secondary school, like everyone else in my time and later. Other than that, I really like your videos. Keep goin. It is interesting to know my country through the eyes of a foreigner.

Hi Dave. You will find English speakers in their 40s and 50s too. The main reason is that in the 80s 90s when tv became available in every household, a large part of the content was spoken in English with subtitles. In my childhood I watched cartoons in English simply because there was no alternative. Some cartoons for younger kids were in Portuguese and others not. We watched whatever was on. Movies were never dubbed. From the 2000s with more content available on cable tv, dubbed in Portuguese, kids started to struggle more with English because kid content in English was not the first choice. So it’s a lot harder for the kids who are now in their 20s to learn English even with English lessons at school from pre-school. They start to actually learn later when they begin to watch content in English as teens and young adults (Netflix, etc) . That’s my view.

I was going to write this. TV played a lot on the English I know today and I believe this is common for my generation. I remember watching cartoon network when I was a kid with no subtitles, and when I started having English lessons in school I already had a lot of vocabulary without even realising it. Nowadays kids watch a lot of Brazilian content in KZbin, so they start speaking with a Brazilian accent before knowing English.

Thank you so much for recommending people learn the basic phrases. There are a lot of Americans here this week and I'm embarrassed that they not only assume everyone speaks English, but they don't even bother saying "please" and "thank you" in English.

I always ask if they speak English, but never assume or expect that they do...I always compliment them no matter how good or bad their English is because most of the time it's better than my Portuguese!!

I would not recomment google translator as it actually translates into Brazilian Portuguese (BP) rather than European Portuguese (EP). There are big differences between BP and EP in all aspects: accent, vocabulary, grammar, sintaxe, semantics, style. I would recommend using DeepL, which is a translator that has EP as an option.

You have a good pronunciation! Com Licença - ( the Ç sounds like an s not a z though - similar to the s in the word license in english) Learning the basics is always good advice. Portuguese is not actually that difficult though, depending on the way you learn! The fear of learning it sets people back. Native English speakers actually have an advantage as the Latin base is strong! Focus on phrases - not so much on just words like many of the apps provide.

20 / 25% of English words are from French, from the 17th and 18th centuries, so many words are recognisable, ( all the TION ending words for an example ! ) but - just words is just words - the base of English is Germanic and rather like Dutch. Knowing a few words, is not enough unfortunately - the grammar, articles tenses, etc etc etc. A lot of the French words are often more formal also. Eg: 'reservation' the French, whereas the more informal ( or just a synonym ) is 'booking' which is a Germanic word So, recognising use of a word is not always straightforward maybe in some cases.

I'm an American who speaks Portuguese thanks to years living and working in Lusophone Africa. Having traveled in Portugal with other Americans, a couple of observations: many Americans know at least a bit of Spanish and because Portuguese and Spanish often look so similar, people tend to pronounce Portuguese words like they were Spanish (for example, a long /oh/ instead of /ooh/ in "obrigado" or a /h/ instead of /dj/ in "José", etc.). I think this is pretty irksome for most Portuguese. A lot of Americans also hop online or use Duolingo to learn some Portuguese and they wind up using Brazilian Portuguese, which is the same language, yes, but there enough pronunciation and grammatical differences to make them mutually unintelligible to an American ear.

"Com licença" ends with a "suh" sound btw, you ended it with a "zuh" kinda sound. "kohn (the "ko" sound is like in co-pilot, etc., ends rather nasaly) lee-sen (sen like in sentry) -suh". PS: No one will judge you as a foreigner for not speaking Portuguese or having a strong accent on top, as long as you understand us, and/or can speak english, you're good, I struggle with anyone who can't speak either portuguese or english, I suggest anyone know 1 of the 2 before coming here, however there are those who speak and understand other languages like french, german, or different kinds of spanish

Should clarify that Obrigado is used if you are a male saying thank you and Obrigada is if you’re a female saying thank you, it’s not dependent on who you are saying thank you to. Other ones that are good to know; Sim (yes) Não (no) Faz de favor (please) I would also add that English is actually spoken by way more than 35 and younger. It’s been taught there as a second language in school since the 60s/70s. Used to also teach French and German and, although German has fallen off a bit, French is still widely spoken there.

Greetings from beautiful and sunny Estoril...Been a legal resident here since 2016...originally from Texas...I have traveled all over the country...As an avid hiker there so many opportunities to get out in nature and visit little Villages throughout the country...I speak mixto Portuguese and mainly from an Brasilian pronunciation, my gal is from there...The whole point for me is to get out in it...If you stay in bigger cities, Lisboa, Oporto and etc...a lot of folks will speak english...In the interior not so much and that is o.k. by me...Makes me practice more and even if I mess up folks appreciate me trying...A lot of times they will ask me where I'm from and when I reply from Texas, they will say we used to watch the telenovela Dallas on T.V. and we all have a laugh...You are holding yourself back if you only stay in certain areas...The roads less traveled bring awesome rewards...Bênçãos e energia positiva! 🇵🇹✌️🤘👌👏🤠

I can tell you that younger generations learn english for 5 years, although it is not something that you might expected them to know it by heart so you might as well learn some basics and do not be afraid to make mistakes because everyone does them 😉 As for moving to Portugal and start living here, that will be tough and I would recommend you to learn portuguese because it will be your daily life and you might want to understand what others are speaking about 😄Portuguese is hard for foreigners the most because we have an different accent and grammar that you might not be used to, such as gender in some words or some irregular verbs but do not give up! It is going to be worth it 🙏

All of my friend kids and my nephews have it since 1st too... That's a hard topic and one I keep talking about. Nobody cares about speaking portuguese, they only speak Brazilian, wich is awful compared to portuguese. Without our people portugal is worthless, soulless, sad as hell!! We have one of the wisest old generations to exist, and nearly nobody cares about it :( It hard to put into words but seeing all these braid dead tourists flooding gorgeous peacefull lands without understanding the how to live is going to be our end. Sure we will get more money, but we will lose what we can't pay for, peace quiet and safe.

1) "Brazilian" nem sequer é uma língua, é uma variedade de português. É normal que haja mais estrangeiros que venham cá e que tenham aprendido a variedade brasileira ao invés da portuguesa - a variedade brasileira do português fora da Europa Ocidental é, de longe, a mais estudada nos dias de hoje pela enorme quantidade de falantes em comparação com a variedade do português falado em Portugal. Em vez de andarmos com nacionalismos estúpidos, deveríamos estar mais focados em avisar os estrangeiros para não cometerem alguns erros relacionados com o português brasileiro em Portugal, mas tirando isso não há qualquer problema; 2) Há zonas do Algarve que há décadas que não têm qualquer tipo de vivalma portuguesa nas suas ruas, e já era expectável que o mesmo acontecesse em Lisboa caso a cidade deixasse de ser o antro de decadência e de drogas que era nas décadas de 1980 e 1990 (o que acabou por acontecer). O que é interessante é que nunca vi tantas críticas assim a turistas no Algarve vindas de algarvios, e olhem que a situação no Algarve já há muito tempo que era muito semelhante à que se vive hoje nas grandes urbes portuguesas... a razão é muito simples: os algarvios, ao contrário dos patriotários lisboetas, não comem gelados com a testa! 3) Entre 2000 e 2019 o número de turistas em Portugal multiplicou por 6 e a criminalidade caiu em quase 60%. Desde 2008 que a criminalidade caiu 40%, e isto com o triplo do turismo (de facto o único ano em que a criminalidade aumentou nos últimos 14 anos foi 2021, um ano excecional dadas as circunstâncias de 2020). Eu por mim preocupar-me-ia mais com a integração dos milhares de imigrantes que estão a chegar agora a Portugal, pois o risco de Portugal passar a ser uma Suécia é grandinho. Portugal nunca recuperou totalmente da explosão de criminalidade que ocorreu nas décadas de 1970 e 1980 devido aos quase 300.000 retornados em condições péssimas de vidas em bairros de lata nos arredores das cidades. A larga maioria dos turistas têm dinheiro e portanto não há tanto a tendência para crimes de segurança pública... 4) A geração mais idosa pode ter bastante conhecimentos, mas levou com o Estado Novo por cima e portanto é extremamente ignorante na larga maioria de aspetos políticos. De facto, uma das grandes razões para Portugal continuar atrasado em comparação com o resto da Europa Ocidental e maioria da UE tem a ver exatamente com essa geração mal instruída da década de 1960...

I would say that colloquially it’s actually VERY common to use it. Seeing someone you know where you might ask, “how’s it going” or “how goes it”, you would ask “tudo bem?” Someone asks you, “how are you doing?” with a “estás bom (boa)” or their “tudo bem?”, you would reply “tudo bem, sim” or something of the sort.

For anyone that needs to use a lot of their mobile data, I would recommend: - yorn (from Vodafone) - moche (from Meo) - Wtf (from Nos). And yes, Wtf is already an expression you know in English (if you need to say the name of the brand out loud just say each letter separately and you will be understood) 😅 These 3 are the "brands" that teenagers and young adults use because you only have to pay in the months you want to use the sim card. You don't have to provide any credit card/bank information to the service providers and you can just stop paying when you don't need it anymore. Even better, the prices of the Sim cards are most likely the cheapest you can get from a phone company and you have different "packages" to choose from, depending on how much internet (GB) you want to have per month. I am not sure about the other two but WTF has most of the apps "for free" meaning: if you pay to have 5 GB per month, those GB will not be used when you are on Instagram /Facebook /WhatsApp and you can use them for free while keeping the 5 GB for other things you need (perhaps like Google maps). It's good because you will never be unreachable if you run out of data. Also, most likely you can order a Sim card for any of these brands online if you don't want to go to a store and talk in Portuguese 😉 I hope this helps! 😊

At the rate that English words are being immersed into Portuguese phrases and daily life (download, app, smartphone, Black Friday, take away, Sport Zone, Web Summit, etc etc), in another generation or two, this issue won't matter as much, as it might be a hybrid language by then, and/or English will be the predominant language in Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve. It almost is already. That's been the downside of tourism, foreign investment and modernization; the loss of identity, tradition and customs, and of outside influence. Let's enjoy it while it lasts; you won't be seeing any Granny security in the future, cause in 20/30 years, the only difference between people here will be values, perspective, morals, family background and passports, as we all become integrated and connected online and real life. Whether that's good or bad is another topic. I might add another phrase to know; "de nada" - you're welcome. Paz, e saude....

Everyone speaks English not just the young people the old people know enough to understand and the reason for that isn't because of our relationship with England it's because most of the Portuguese people leave Portugal to go live in the United States or Canada so there's where some of the English is learned and the rest is from movies and television but when half the people in the country are visiting from north america the local people have no choice but to learn it.
