In my case, I was in a relationship with someone who was an alcoholic and very irresponsible. I didn't realize all this until a few months after we moved in together and had a child. I tried everything in my power to help him quit drinking, plan his finances and keep a job but it was all in vain. Eventually I left him but everyone, including my family and his blamed me. It all boiled down to the fact that I was seen as successful and stable and was supposed to take care of him. I couldn't do that in good faith since my daughter was watching and I didn't want her to live in a dysfunctional home. I never asked him for a dime in child support, I've been taking care of my daughter for 8 years, it's very hard being a single mom in America but I wouldn't have it' any other way

I agree with most of what you are saying but something you mentioned in passing or did not mention about couples in divorce is that most men are socialized to take care of women. So whereas many of them can hire good lawyers and fight women in court, most do not because they do not see the need to, or do not have the will to fight women the same way women may fight hard against a man. In other words men tend to go easy on women. Also, research shows that men are less likely to demand child support even when it is owed to them. I know two Kenyans who are divorced and although they ended up with the kids and are owed child support, they do not go after the ladies for it. Men tend to believe they do not need anything financial from women but women on the other hand will go all out to get that support and use whatever means to get it, etc.

In the west, there is a misconception that "the law favours women"! The reality is, that bills that become law are written to be fair/balanced; especially family law. However, the fact that women are "hypergamous" is lost on many; they always marry up! Only under extenuating circumstances will you ever come across a woman who marries down. Spousal and child support are calculated based on a table/formula; usually the higher earner ends up paying to the party earning less income. Men usually don't go into marriages with this in mind. Men are attracted to beauty, femininity and nurturing qualities in a woman. Although the interpretation of laws by judges can be questinable at times, there are checks and balances that can be employed (pre/post-nuptial agreements and the appeal process).

Marriage is not for children and immature people. The earlier this hits home (may be at teenage ) the better so that one can avoid potentially immature and sick people for spouses. Divorce is better if both of you are naturally mature! Keep talking about things that no one wants to talk. Poor families will disown their female relatives over fear of loss of income or any other thing they fetch from the marriage. There is also unhealthy jealousy in families.
@WuonOdidi3 ай бұрын
Unfortunately this is true :(

You hit the nail on the head. Unfortunately our married Kenyan women are the worst and treat their so called divorced women friends like lepers, completely isolating them. The family will beg you to stay in abusive relationships and remind you “si uliwachana na bwanako?”. It seems one is more valued if they die from the abuse without having been divorced. Let’s normalize healthy relationships and walking away if one of the parties does not adhere to the terms of the marriage.
