In this video we discuss the active damping and suspension on the RP968 time attack car, with Dejan Ninic from TT Suspension. Active damping is a significant advancement in car control, and allows you much better control over the damping rates for a given spring setup.

Sorry for the slightly dodgy camera framing, it was day 2 WTAC and I forgot my tripod! Thanks heaps to Dejan for chatting about this technology, you can find Tractive at tractivesuspension.com/

Please include more B-roll shots in your video, I find myself scrolling down to read the comments when I already have a minute ago! Other than this, active suspension is a piece of technology that isn't talked about as much as it should so this video really was a treat!

Love the videos, if you’re open to suggestions I would recommend getting a mic for your interviews. It seems like the setting has bad acoustics and its difficult to hear the interview. It would make a hell of a difference especially to headphone users. Best

Thats impressive as heck 100 odd kg vs 200 some kg for an ls. Thats a very impressive weight difference especially if in a single seater of less than 1000kg

you could use hydraulics to do the variable suspension active F1 style use a slightly longer shock and use the hydraulic ram to keep the tire/spliter the same ride height. as the aero load increases the ram would extend compressing the normal spring and adding just the right increase of spring rate. and could be used to lift the out side in curves. with bypass shocks you can tune a high speed (bottom 1/3) and tight corners (upper 2/3) sections.

Any chance of a video explaining "Interter" dampers that Indycar teams and even some very high level late model dirt racers are using?

I am thinking of buying a mid wheel drive powerchair with active trac suspension. Is this suspension front, rear or all round?

is this the same as how the KW DDC suspension works?
@TENNESSEETRACKHAWK
@TENNESSEETRACKHAWK 3 жыл бұрын
No definitely not. This has a stand alone computer that replaces the DCC. Its way more advanced than the KW DCC which uses ur factory DCC which only stiffens to 80%.

How much more mass does an active system usually add over a normal damping system? Is the added mass (if any) part of sprung mass, unsprung mass, or a combination of both?
@IR-xy3ij
@IR-xy3ij 2 жыл бұрын
It's almost always worth it, as active suspension is specifically banned in F1. Any technology banned in F1 is game changing.

What are the advantages here vs an MR damper? I guess the fluid is more predictable than an emulsion. 6ms is probably fast enough to do ground hook damping. It's been a long time since I read papers on that though

What's ground hook
@AntonEMaes
@AntonEMaes 6 жыл бұрын
I'm probably butchering this but it's basically an active damping strategy where you use sensors on the vehicle to simulate as if the vehicle is damped relative to a fixed point on the ground (i.e. hooked to the ground) The idea is that since tires are load sensitive (lose relative grip at higher loads) if you can smooth out the spikes from bumps you'll get better traction. This comes at the expense of the driver who takes a bit more beating. You hear about its cousin "skyhook" more often where people are trying to optimize ride like in offroad applications. I remember Maserati offered a skyhook suspension once but I don't recall if their implementation was any good. There was a lot of talk about this for military vehicles though since a lot of what limits your speed offroad is the beating the crew can handle.

ok cool I've got it thanks for the reply guys sounds awesome, so is it reactive to what the sensors feed it or do you have to program it from track data, In drag racing its used as a time based program to change at different points on the run.

I still don’t understand why an active suspension Technology should be used in a race car 🏎 where the input road frequencies are probably too low and known already. I mean this setup in an ATV would make much more sense wherein the input road frequencies vary like hell all over the transmissibility graph and it wouldn’t do without an active setup.

Sachin Dangi I think the height dependency is the big motivation here. With a lot of aero and riding on the bump rubbers your spring rate is all over the place
@AntonEMaes
@AntonEMaes 6 жыл бұрын
Sachin Dangi you could also probably do some interesting things with transient roll stiffness, but that's in the low speed part of the curve so it might not be worth it

Interesting that it is not classified as active aero. Aero enhances grip, but so does traction control and or active suspension. So why is active aero banned in some events and not traction control etc...
@marfrandema1884
@marfrandema1884 6 жыл бұрын
You can do that, williams did that in 92 and 93, on the straights the car raise the front to reduce drag and have a higher top speed even with the bhp lost by the active suspension system.

RedBull actually developed a similar system that would lower the back of the car at high speed to reduce drag but the FIA classed it ad active aero and deemed it illegal
