How do Chinese Kids React to Foreigners?

How will Chinese kids look at you? Will they be surprised if you speak Chinese? How about if you speak perfectly, will you still be an alien to them? Will the kids react the way you think they will or will you be more shocked than them?

@@cavu2555 No particular reason, really. It was the era of the "one child" policy, and chinese orphanages were flooded by children who needed parents, and girls in particular. Lots and lots of children found parents in USA, Canada and Europe.

@@cavu2555 I simply couldn't tell you. We adopted a chinese girl almost 20 years ago. And we followed the normal procedures for adopting a child from China to our country. If you wish to adopt a child, you should seek information from the appropriate authorities in your own country.

I've lived in China 4 years and kids stare at you, it's just out of pure curiosity. I've never had any negative reactions from people, it's always friendly. You can get treated like a celebrity at times. Your Chinese is excellent btw.

@@thetwilightzone2541 I was in guandong for less than a year. Never had any trouble personally and people looked at me with interest, even taking photos from afar at me. I just noticed that when there were large groups of foreigners with old guys passing by, those were spitting around the streets. I know it sucks but to some old people, is still hard to be open up to foreigners

I admire any Westerner who doesn't mind being seen as an alien!👏👏 Whether by children or adults. I've lived in Japan since 2003, and I'm immensely bothered by this, because in Brazil I would never view anyone as an alien. I find it very embarrassing! Even worse is when you speak the local language fluently, and they insist to speaking in English just to take advantage of the opportunity to exercise the little English they know. Things get worse, because in the minds of Asians, every Caucasian is a native English speaker, and consequently has an obligation to understand English. In my case, I get very upset about this, as I am Causasian, and my native language is Portuguese. Sometimes I think that it didn't mean anything to me to study the Japanese language, because just because I'm Caucasian, they insist on speaking English to me. I think about how one of them would feel if they were in the USA, for example, and someone came to speak in Chinese Mandarin. It's embarrassing when people ask me if I'm American, and I say I'm Brazilian. Not that I'm ashamed of being Brazilian. Quite the opposite! But some Japanese people are clearly disappointed when I say I'm Brazilian and not American. I don't understand how a people who suffered the effects of two atomic bombs can be so sycophantic when their tormentors launched those two bombs. It's a level zero of self-love, I think. Furthermore, I believe that some Japanese parents tell their young children that all Brazilians, Latin Americans or anyone from developing countries are dishonest, criminals and violent. I have already seen the contempt shown by some children towards foreigners from the third world. We know that children are like a blank book. They have no evil, and they don't know what prejudice is. Unless some ignorant adult teaches them to behave in this regrettable way.

True story: Years ago my husband was working on a job site and he would stop at this little Chinese grocery store. One day he noticed there were a few kittens hanging around their shelves Seeing we were longing for a calico and they had one, he approached the mother, father and little boy and asked if he could buy one. He came home that night and we agreed to taking their calico kitten. So he went the next day after work and they had everything ready, from kitten food, a box and some kitten toys. As my husband was leaving with new kitten in tow their little boy comes up to my husband and said; Don't forget Mister, she only speaks Chinese." I've been laughing at that line ever since. 😂 Too cute. We had her for 12+ years before she died of heart failure. She was a beauty.

I worked for a Chinese owned company for a couple of years back about 10 years ago, so had to make several business trips up there from Australia. Mostly I stayed in the centre of the cities I was in, but occasionally had to stay in areas that had less contact with the west. It was in these places that I caused the most stir, mostly like you, by being followed by numbers of kids who wanted to engage with me and practice their English. Very cute. They were also fascinated by the fact that I had fairish hair and blue eyes.

Here I am showing my age - I travelled to China with my sister and a friend in 1984! It was just opening up to tourists and the only way to travel was in an organised tour group. Needless to say we were surrounded by the Chinese people eager to speak to us and practice their English- mainly adults the children were too shy to approach.

I lived in China (a few hours from Wuhan by train) from 2000 to 2006. Being stopped by strangers wanting to practice their English or being invited for meals out or to homes was completely normal. When I first moved there I always found it a little unusual for the first few months when I went shopping. I used to pass a group of fruit and veg sellers who would have a habit of taking my shopping bags from me, looking inside and then interrogate me on how much I had paid. Later on during my time there I would learn to haggle / barter for everything. But yeah, just a few basic words and phrases always went a long way

I went to China back in 2019, just over a month before the pandemic started. I have 2 ft of dark curly hair and an olive skin tone, so I'm used to getting stared at whenever I travel. Got plenty of them in China, and the best one happened in Tai'an. I went out for some chow mein one evening, and the couple sitting at the table next to me actually stopped and watched me eat. I just gave them a smile and nod, and ignored them. Good times. It also happened one time when I was working in San Francisco as a bank teller a couple of decades ago. I did a transaction for a Chinese client, and she took a picture of me before walking away. Everyone got a laugh out of that one.

This is a misconception that has been brewing for a while. Asians are nice to foreigners because its in their nature to be hospitable to visitors and nothing to do with the beauty of hair or such. Add curiosity to that. Don't mistake Asian kind nature.

I visited China but it was about 10 years ago. Beijing twice with one visit I added Xian. And one visit to Hong Kong. I only could speak a handful of simple Chinese words. At that time I was a member of a travel website. I contacted a few local people in each city. They would meet me at my hotel and take me to lunch or dinner. During some of the days I went on tours with either a small group or private guide. The majority of the locals I encountered were very nice and helpful to me. The food is so good. That is a part of the trip that spoiled me. After eating the food in China. I can no longer eat the American Style Chinese food in the take out restaurants in my area of the states.

Let me tell what I have encountered in US during my 6 months stayed even though I can speak reasonable English. A non-Chinese here from Southeast Asia country. I really admired American and westerners. They are so lucky that they can come to Asia countries and still they are so welcomed to work, travel and live especially China without facing any racism, discrimination or Asian tell them to go back to your country or go back to America. Yet most are treated by well by Asians or Chinese in China. In China and other Asia countries they can travel to any corner without have to fear of any danger. Decades ago, I went US in California living at La Habra the City of Brea Harbor Blvd. It is my America dream since my teenage days to go to US and hope to be accepted as citizen. But unfortunately, it doesn't work out for me and my America dream ended up a nightmare. I really can't remember how many times I was told by the locals especially the whites telling me "Hay! Asian, go back to your Asia" Many racist names calling on me. And I was chased by a gang wanted to beat me up. After 6 months there, I have decided to pack and come back to Asia and never look back again. Not even I am paid to go to a country that people are so racist. And I have from friends saying it is now worst than before after Trump was voted as President.

I don’t know a single white person here who treats Asians like that and I’m 55 years old. I went to school with children from Japan, China, Korea, and the Philippines. I am still connected with a school friend whose family moved back to Japan when their father transferred back to Sony’a main office. It sounds like you moved to a very bad town in California. It was not worse here under president Trump. However, living under President Biden is very bad now. There’s more crime here with higher robberies and murders against all races.

@@TAL142 - I’m sorry to hear that was your experience here. I have had talks with my Asian friends (who still live here) asking them about that narrative. Not one of them was ever threatened or told to go back where they came from. Even during Covid, nobody ran up to them and blamed them for the pandemic. Not saying it never happens, but it hasn’t ever happened to any of my friends, because I’ve asked them about their experiences. You probably would’ve been better off in a friendlier city. Where do you live?

@@finster1968 I am in California. All I am saying it is more common than you think. My neighbor is ABC. He is as American as you can imagined. He was even a little biased against immigrant Chinese complaining about too many Chinese moving in. But later he complained to me he was told to go home on his trip at the airport. Sometimes Asians just don’t complain as much about these stuffs and rather just get along with everyone. You are called Karen if you say these stuffs to blacks but usually not much is done or even reported against other races. All I am saying it still exist with the way government intentionally demonizing certain group of people. This is just like taking down confederated stuffs. Those are history. But US politics simply won’t leave things alone. And they were democrats while Abraham Lincoln was republican.

I really admire your language skills… I’m a retired teacher, 75 years old, 1st generation American, born to Italian and German parents, but never spoke a foreign language. My wife and I will spend 15 days in Japan this coming summer. I decided to study Japanese, not just for the trip, but for the challenge. Our family was in Japan 4 years ago and we went to the Peace Park in Hiroshima. While there, a school group was presenting 1000 origami cranes and to pray for peace. Afterwards, a small group of the students came up with a teacher and practiced their English with us, mostly asking where we had come from, how old our children were, and where in Japan we had been. The boy who asked the most questions was a bit overwhelmed, kept stumbling on his words as he tried to remember his English but it was passable.

I really struggle with speaking (and honestly, everything else too!), so I am trying pimsleur now thanks to your recommendation. I've started from level 3 and I don't know if it'll be helpful for me, but I enjoy being able to practice a little Japanese while doing other tasks. The kids in this video are so cute! I have been going to China about annually since 93, (except during covid :( ), and you are completely correct in how Chinese people react to foreigners. Your Mandarin is better than mine, but nonetheless I have found that when I say something in Chinese, the reaction is wonderful. My last trip I started using a translation app and found that that made communication much more effective, as my vocabulary still sucks. Anyhow, great video, always happy to see someone bridging the east and west. Best of luck

I live in Switzerland and when my daughter first saw my friend from Santo Domingo she also cried because she had never seen a black person before (she was only 2 years old at the time). My friend had lots of coloured beads in her hair and that scared my daughter even more. We all had to laugh.

This is a great video. The Chinese was very simple and easy to understand. I'm only an advanced beginner, or pre-intermediate, or A2-B1 or whatever metric they are using these days haha, but I could understand everything.

That is not true. I still cannot understand why Chinese kids are so dumb. In my country , if they see any Asian people our kids won't react as something like this. They are reacting like they saw aliens from space. In my country if our kids see a foreigner they will just look that is all. All Chinese kids are acting so dumb to be honest.
