Reminds me of something that happened to me one time… Chinese friends of mine that owned a restaurant that taught me a few words in Cantonese, and one of them was the word for ugly and the other was the word for pretty, and one day her parents came to visit with them for a few days, and my daughter had some facial piercings, and she came with me one time And they were talking amongst themselves and then I heard her father say the word for ugly and I told him no, not ugly pretty and the look on his face was hilarious… His face went white lol and my friend was killing herself laughing

I love your videos man. I've been learning Japanese for awhile homie and I struggle so much. I know its because I don't spend enough time dedicated to it. But watching all of your videos helps motivate me and seeing these wonderful interactions lets me know just how much I have missed out on over the years. I lived in Japan for three years and didn't learn enough of the language and had a difficult time making Japanese friends because of it. I always needed someone who could translate. Watching your videos always makes me wish I tried harder to learn my patrons' languages when I used to work at a casino. I never got farther than learning "panda", "dragon", "woo-hoo", "oh no", "f*** you", "thank you", and a myriad of other curses and exclamations in Manadarin, Cantonese, and Vietnamese (there were a group of 6 vietnamese ladies who would sit at my table every night if players were winning). I primarily dealt baccarat if it wasn't obvious. Talk about people gossiping about you in other languages! 8hrs a day it was my life. At the same time, there were so many lovely and kind folks that would sit and talk with me if the table wasn't busy. Some of them used me to practise their English and I got to know so many interesting people I wouldn't otherwise have had the chance to talk with. It helped that I was a dealer that cared for my players and didn't just think of them as chips and tips. As a white person who didn't live in a diverse city until 18 (for basic reference, I didn't have popular international foods like phở, sushi, curry, and ramen until I went to university), it was so refreshing. My life changed once I wasn't scared to ask people about their cultures and countries to learn. I hope more white folks will do the same.

More often than not, I can probably say that they don't actually gossip about customers in front of their face, usually it's just random bantering amongst each other and it's not about you. And to be fair, no matter what job people do, as long as they work with customers, they'll gossip about them anyway, regardless if it's in another language or not. Like I can't imagine serving staff not complaining about customers or tables with each other, it's just not in front of the customers' faces, so it's not like these workers are doing anything different from any other normal customer service job and it's kind of to be expected.

I have actually had someone speak to me in my own native language and not understood a word they were saying, not because they were terrible at it, but because my mind was trying to translate the sounds into any other language than the right one. Had a similar experience when I was in Tokyo a couple months ago. I'm French, so I didn't expect Japanese people to speak French obviously. I was struggling to get a metro ticket, and a Japanese salary man waited behind me. I felt bad, thinking he was maybe in a hurry, so I stepped back and offered him to go first. Well, maybe not as many Japanese study French as study English, and it's true that many of the Japanese who study English don't gain true fluency in English, but French is still a major world language. so it makes sense that you'll find some Japanese who learn French through school and/or who have lived and worked in French-speaking countries, with some acquring high fluency. It's not like a random Japanese person busting out Albanian or Hungarian or Czech (and I am sure you can find some who know those languages as well). There's even a French movie called "Hiroshima Mon Amour" that is set in France and features a Japanese actor who speaks his lines in French in the movie.
