I feel like these kids could turn out 2 ways. one is that they continue to push themselves to go above and beyond with activities such as swimming laps before sunrise, exercising, studying or working 12 hours a day, they will certainly be a success in the governments eye. Then theres a possibility that after years of going the extra mile and having to be compared to students older than they, having constant pressure and stress, that the student will quit extra activities or if life becomes difficult they may get burned out and may stop caring and feel like they need a break from constantly being pushed to be better.

I’m a therapist in America. I’m American and a big complaint I hear when working with young adults is “I don’t know how to do anything. I have no skills and I’m struggling financially because of it.” I think there could be balance but having a lifetime of low achievement and low earnings is it’s own form of abuse by setting children up to fail if you don’t prepare them to be successful. We’re in a capitalist society especially in America. It’s cruel not to give them the tools to succeed academically and financially. Sorry not sorry. These kids may need therapy in the future but I can almost guarantee they’ll be able to afford it.

There is a pretty huge problem with this form of parenting and it’s that it constricts a child to their parents or society’s desires. That in turn restricts a child’s mind and imagination, and more often than not they fail when they have to leave those parameters and think without structure. I’ve seen this first hand. For reference, I’m a young college student and in 2023 I attended a legal summer camp at a top university. There I found a lot of students who grew up in these types of households and a lot who didn’t. More often than not the “tiger” kids would excel at multiple choice questions and reading basic legal material but they would fall apart completely when it came time to actually argue a case or move beyond what was established for them. I still remember mock trial where I watched multiple of these types of kids bomb completely either because they were overconfident and didn’t prepare or because they just outright failed to deliver a good argument. I think this was likely due to a lack of guidance and creativity. Most tiger kids are raised with constant handholding and coddling that smothers them over time. They become complacent within systems that they understand and excel in while more often than not failing to move beyond them and explore new possibilities. It’s part of the reason why China (a country notorious for tiger parenting) produces far fewer major innovations and Nobel laureates than the west or other Asian countries. It’s not because China is dumber, it’s because their kids lack the ability to think outside of the box because it was never a priority in their education. They became skilled at paper work, basic research, and solving multiple choice problems but aren’t so good at exploring possibilities, creative thinking, or moving beyond established concepts all of which you need for innovation. Lastly, constricting your child can do some serious damage to their mental health. The pressure to succeed and the constraints imposed by parents can drive many kids into depression or worse. It’s often a counter intuitive method of parenting in this regard because if you’re putting the well-being of your child at risk you’ve already failed as a parent regardless of their success. Happiness has to balance success otherwise it will be hollow and ultimately meaningless, leaving the child with a fairly miserable life all for the parents own gratification.

@@MOTIVATIONBYDAR Not exactly, they were tested as gifted at a very young age, therefore no intervention was needed, however no amount of intervention would turn an ordinary child into a genius. For a parent to think they can train a child into the level is unrealistic and put undue pressure on the child. That is just cruel. Every parent hopes their child is capable of being gifted just by pressuring them, that is simply not the case.

As a white person I respect and admire the Asian parenting style. As a child of pretty strict parents myself I am absolutely grateful to them and what I have been prepared for in life through a certain level of discipline and learning what work ethic is. Anyone saying their psyche is not stable or damaged by this parenting style in any way - it’s actually the opposite, these kids are usually quite thick skinned and have stamina.
