Only for as long as we are learning the fill, or the groove to a particular song. Once it is well rehearsed, we subsequently shift over to playing it by feel knowing that it is mathematically accurate.

I don't even count when playing odd times signatures 😂 you count when you have to figure out how the signature can be implemented with subdivisions. That's it. After that don't count anymore, you need to interiorize the signature. That's all.

The “uh” bit has made sense to me since I was like 4. As the son of a professional drummer, I learned to count rhythmically before I could put 2 and 2 together. God Bless drummers!

Dancers use those same numbers to count and connect the movement to the music. So I began making those same sounds as I choreographed, which also help the dancers feel the music the way I was, and how I choreographing to it.

I had SO many problems with that when i started picking up an instrument. I did like 8 years of dancing. And dancers usually count 8 notes (basicly an A and a B section that alternates) and then subdivide that to 16ths.😅 Took so long to unlearn that

I get the counting, but saying "Accent on the uh of 4" means nothing to me. But play it once like you did and I've got it forever. Some things are over-complicated unnecessarily I think.

Weirdly enough only 3 and 6 have a 'proper' way to count. For 3s it's '1 + a 2 + a 3 + a 4 + a' Read that "One and uh Two and uh..." I can't type out the 6 very well but it's the same as the 3 just each count becomes two syllables. Think "Wo un" instead of "One". For 5s and 7s, and any other unusual subdivisions, you either feel it out or count with numbers. Feel it out if you're a soloist, count with numbers if you're not.
